Continuation des mesmes observations du mois de Fevrier 1678.First French, the international language of science of the time, also first Book Edition of the first really accurate description of the red blood corpuscles, which Swammerdam had noted in 1658 !"Especially skilful and indefatigable in the grinding of lenses was Antonj van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), chamberlain (janitor) of the Council Chamber of the Worshipful Sheriffs of Delft, Holland, and otherwise employed in a linen drapery shop. The Dutchman Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680) and the Italian Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) are often credited with describing the red blood corpuscles before Leeuwenhoek, but Swammerdam only referred to the presence of "ruddy globules" in the blood and doubted that blood in its vessels contains such globules, while Malpighi's interest seems to have been only casual. It is Leeuwenhoek, therefore, who deserves the credit for having provided the first real description of the red blood cells. He was untutored and had had little formal education, but he was a person of infinite curiosity and patience. He examined his own blood, described the red corpuscles, and even measured their … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tavernier, Jean-Baptiste.
[Amsterdam], suivant la copie imprimée à Paris, 1679. Small 8vo. (8), 564, (4) pp. With 2 folding engr. maps and 8 folding engr. plates; several woodcuts in the text. Wants the portrait found in some copies. Contemp. dark brown full calf with traces of oxydized giltstamping to spine and gilt leading edges. First Amsterdam reprint: Taviernier's description of the Ottoman Imperial Seraglio - his first published work, which had appeared separately as early as 1675 - here forms the final part of his "Recueil de plusieurs relations et traitez singuliers & curieux", an independent publication which was, from 1679 onwards, appended to the author's "Six voyages en Turquie, en Perse, et aux Indes" (thus ultimately forming that collection's third and final volume). It was this volume, containing Tavernier's studies in commercial politics, that made the author's travels widely known. The fine maps show Japan and Tonquin, the plates depict costumes, a theatre performance, temples, and various processions. A woodcut in the Seraglio section gives the Islamic profession of faith, the Shahada, in Arabic script. "Tavernier spent eleven months in Constantinople before setting out on his first journey. He joined a caravan for Persia in 1638 and, between 1643 and 1668, made six voyages to Persia, India, the East Indies and Japan. During his travels he amassed a large collection of diamonds and jewels. His successful commercial enterprise was recognised by Louis XIV and he was granted a patent of nobility for his contribution to the establishment of French trade in Asia. It was Tavernier who in … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Tottenham / 1832 / Nottingham', short strip of clear tape to head of title, slight marginal loss to lower corner of Y3, occasional creasing, light dust-soiling, spotting. A reply, by Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist Peter Du Moulin (1601-1684), to Philanax Anglicus, or, a Christian caveat (1663). First printed in 1664, the work seeks to bolster the position of the restored Protestant Church through proclamations of devotion to the sovereign, whilst directly challenging British Catholics to confront the consequences of their loyalty to the papacy. Edward Tottenham (1810-1853), Irish clergyman, graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, who served successively as minister for Kensington Chapel, Bath, Curate of Laura Chapel, Bath, and, from 1841, as a Prebendary of Wells. Tottenham devoted himself to the scholarly study of the Roman Catholic Church and liturgy, which he perceived to be corrupted; his book collection, purchased by the Bath Reference Library upon his death, well reflected this sentiment. PETTY, Sir William
London: Obadiah Blagrave,, 1679. Quarto (203 x 152 mm). Recent full calf, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label, double blind-rule to boards with floral corner pieces, sprinkled edges. Title lightly dust soiled with the odd spot, natural paper flaw to margin of final preliminary leaf; a very good copy with generous margins, lower edge entirely uncut. Third edition of Petty's first economic treatise, which "followed immediately after the Restoration, when changes in the methods of raising revenue were being discussed. The wide range of his survey is shewn by the headings printed on the title-page" (Keynes). This edition, a reprint of the second of 1667 with minor-corrections in the title-page, was published against Petty's wishes. "Written in the midst of urgent practical tasks, the Treatise was plainly occasioned by another question of great immediate importance - the reorganisation of the Revenue by the Restoration Parliament. However, in contrast to the many economic treatises written in defence of concrete interests, while professing to be unbiased theoretical pronouncements, Petty's work is even more remarkable for its theoretical digressions than for its acute and important analysis of its immediate subject. So far from making any claim to scientific detachment, it contains a devastating attack on his bêtes noires, the parasites on the body politic, primarily the clergy and the lawyers, but its greatest achievement is his searching treatment of the main problems of scientific economics. The book is brimful of brilliant i … [Click Below for Full Description]

'The Temptation and Downfall of the Vicar of Stanton Lacy' published by Merlin Unwin Books 2005. An excellent account of the Vicar's downfall and execution. Foulkes, Robert. (bap.1634, d.1679), Church of England clergyman and murderer. On 7 September 1657 he married Isabella, daughter of Thomas Colbatch, rector of Ludlow, Shropshire. In September 1660 Foulkes became vicar of Stanton Lacy, a parish adjacent to Ludlow. The exercise of his clerical duties brought Foulkes into a series of conflicts with his neighbours. He also became notorious in his parish and further afield for his extramarital sexual relations, especially with Anne Atkinson, of whom he seems to have been guardian. In 1678 Anne Atkinson became pregnant with Foulkes's child. In an attempt to conceal the pregnancy and possibly to seek an abortion Foulkes accompanied Atkinson to London. They took lodgings in York Buildings in the Strand where, on 11 December, Atkinson gave birth to a girl. Foulkes, who performed the delivery himself, cut the infant's throat the same day and disposed of its body in a priv … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Reverend Pere Texier, de la Compagnie de Jesus
Paris - Estienne Michallet, 1679. A very scarce religious text from the Society of Jesus, the Catholic religious order known as Jesuits. The work discusses the three curses of the fisherman, the necessary qualities of a Christian king, the fatherland, the curse of exterior property, the cursed impious in his property and his honour. The society of Jesus is a strictly male religious order whose clerics are known as 'Jesuits'. The Jesuits profess three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience along with their ownforth vow, that of absolute obedience to the Pope. The order is characterised by their intellectualism as each member must study philosophy, science and theology, then gain a professorship before they can take holy orders. There is a final chapterproviding the most notable materials in the text. In French. Condition: In a calf binding. Externally, sound with some rubbing and marks to boards. Rear joint is starting but firm. Loss to head and tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound with light foxing andoccasional worming andhandling marks topages. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
