'The Temptation and Downfall of the Vicar of Stanton Lacy' published by Merlin Unwin Books 2005. An excellent account of the Vicar's downfall and execution. Foulkes, Robert. (bap.1634, d.1679), Church of England clergyman and murderer. On 7 September 1657 he married Isabella, daughter of Thomas Colbatch, rector of Ludlow, Shropshire. In September 1660 Foulkes became vicar of Stanton Lacy, a parish adjacent to Ludlow. The exercise of his clerical duties brought Foulkes into a series of conflicts with his neighbours. He also became notorious in his parish and further afield for his extramarital sexual relations, especially with Anne Atkinson, of whom he seems to have been guardian. In 1678 Anne Atkinson became pregnant with Foulkes's child. In an attempt to conceal the pregnancy and possibly to seek an abortion Foulkes accompanied Atkinson to London. They took lodgings in York Buildings in the Strand where, on 11 December, Atkinson gave birth to a girl. Foulkes, who performed the delivery himself, cut the infant's throat the same day and disposed of its body in a priv … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Reverend Pere Texier, de la Compagnie de Jesus
Paris - Estienne Michallet, 1679. A very scarce religious text from the Society of Jesus, the Catholic religious order known as Jesuits. The work discusses the three curses of the fisherman, the necessary qualities of a Christian king, the fatherland, the curse of exterior property, the cursed impious in his property and his honour. The society of Jesus is a strictly male religious order whose clerics are known as 'Jesuits'. The Jesuits profess three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience along with their ownforth vow, that of absolute obedience to the Pope. The order is characterised by their intellectualism as each member must study philosophy, science and theology, then gain a professorship before they can take holy orders. There is a final chapterproviding the most notable materials in the text. In French. Condition: In a calf binding. Externally, sound with some rubbing and marks to boards. Rear joint is starting but firm. Loss to head and tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound with light foxing andoccasional worming andhandling marks topages. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Although the 34Ancient-Medieval-Modern34 division of history was used earlier by ItalianRenaissance scholars Leonardo Bruni and Flavio Biondo Cellarius Universal History Divided into an Ancient Medieval and New Period helped popularize it. After him this tripartite division became standard. The library of the University of Applied Sciences in Schmalkalden bears his name it is called the 34Cellarius Bibliothek34 in honor of Cellarius. Ephemera.
The Andrew Jackson, a 1679 ton medium clipper, was built in Mystic in 1855. She was a fast sailer but, contrary to what this handbill would imply, set no records on any of her passages. On the date of the voyage advertised here - December 16, 1861 - her captain was Johnson. It is interesting to note that, just at this time, naval action in the Civil War was ramping up. The "Constitution" arrived at Ship Island at the mouth of the Mississippi River carrying the 26th Massachusetts Regiment to New Orleans, Great Britain began their embargo on US exports, and the naval blockade of the Confederate coast began to show results. This might explain the military theme of the handbill. However, despite the turmoil of the war, the text states that the Andrew Jackson might depart “by Christmas day, but certainly on or before the 1st of January.” The ship was sold to the British in 1863 and was lost in the Gaspar Straits in 1868. This handbill measures 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches and has a wonderful image of Jackson astride his horse, American flag behind, which also appeared on the 1862 clipper ship sailing card for the "Andrew Jackson." Interestingly, this iconic image was drawn (and signed) by George F. Nesbitt, who was also the printer of this handbill and of many clipper ship sailing cards. It is the only example of his artwork that I know of. Matted and framed, under glass. In Fine condition.

[MANUSCRIPT]. WILLIAM III, Prince of Orange.
Decree signed by William of Orange, Stadholder of The Netherlands and future King William III of England, tranferring to Johan Diederik (or Theodo(o)r), 2nd Baron of Friesheim, recently appointed chief bailiff and state prosecutor in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, all sources of income that had been previously bestowed on his predecessor, Johan Ruse, in total 330 guilders per year plus further unspecified emoluments. The document notes that Friesheim had been appointed to succeed Ruse on 5 October 1679. It is signed by William of Orange ("Guillaume de Orange") and Johan Pesters, a leading figure in William's entourage. Johan Ruse may have been the former Burgomaster of Maasstricht of that name, also known as Johannes Rusius, who was still living in 1668.In his teens or early twenties Johan Diederik had served as William of Orange's page and became a captain in the Dutch army in 1666. He was to serve many years under William of Orange, rising to the rank of Major General in 1701 and General in 1718. He gradually shifted into civilian life beginning in 1709 and ended his career as Governor of 's-Hertogenbosch, where he died in 1733. The earlier civilian post documented in the present decree is not recorded in the standard biographies, which note that little is known about Friesheim, in spite of his distinguished career and decorations for his military achievements under King William III.The document and complete paper and wax seal in very good condition, formerly folded and with some small holes in the blank second leaf where folds cross.

Worm trails to both sets of endpapers, marginal worming to last three maps, vellum lightly rubbed and marked, else an excellent copy. First German edition of Sanson's handsome atlas portatif, translated from the French continental volumes published in 1648, 1652, 1655, and 1657. The collation resembles closely the 1683 edition with 62 engraved maps, here with 15 maps of the Americas, 13 of Europe, 17 of Asia, and 18 of Africa. Nicolas Sanson père (1600-1667) began as a military engineer, but was encouraged by his publisher Melchior Tavernier to become a cartographer. Originally he worked in his native town of Abbeville (he is sometimes referred to as Sanson d'Abbeville), later moving to Paris. Considered by many as the founder of the French school of cartography, his maps, although "not nearly as ornamental as the maps of the Dutch school", their embellishment being "confined to a title cartouche for each map… they are very clear and neat, pleasing to the eye and of handy format" (Tooley). Sanson founded a dynasty consisting of his sons Nicolas le fils and Guillaume, and two grandsons Adrien and Pierre … [Click Below for Full Description]

CRASSET, Jean and Maria Antonia de Saõ Boaventura MENEZES (translator)
Alt Japan Katalog 381; Cordier, Japonica, col. 401; for the map: Hubbard, Japoniae insulae 96. First and only Portuguese edition of Jean Crasset's Histoire de l'eglise du Japon (1679), the only edition in any language to include a map of Japan. Jean Crasset, a French Jesuit, based his work on François Solier's Histoire ecclesiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon (1627) and continued the account from 1624 to 1658. It gives an elaborate history of the Jesuit mission in Japan, beginning with Francis Xaver. The plates, by Miguel (Michel) le Bouteux, show Japanese costumes, the emperor's palace and an execution of Jesuit missionaries. Bouteux copied the map from a 1646 map of Japan titled "Japponiae nova" in Antonio Francisco Cardim's Fasciculus e Japponicis floribus , an illustrated history of Jesuit martyrdom in Japan. Manoel da Sylva published a Portuguese translation of Cardim's history in 1650, which most likely served as Bouteux's direct model. It includes a key locating 36 Jesuit colleges, residences, seminaries and churches. With bookplate and owner's entry. In very good condition, with only a tiny marginal worm hole in a couple leaves and a few leaves slightly browned. The bindings contain several small wormholes and the spines and corners are slightly damaged, but they are otherwise in good condition.

FERMAT, Pierre de
Woodcut vignette on title, two engraved headpieces, five folding engraved plates, & woodcut diagrams in the text. 6 p.l., 210, [3] pp. Folio, early 19th-cent. half red morocco & red boards (minor browning), flat spine gilt. Toulouse: J. Pech, 1679. First edition, and now rare on the market; this copy belonged to Dominique François Jean Arago (1786-1853), the great French scientist who made important contributions to astronomy, electro-magnetism, and optics (see D.S.B., I, pp. 200-03). This book, Fermat's only substantial publication apart from his edition of Diophantus (both prepared and published posthumously by his son), contains the majority of Fermat's mathematical work. Included are Fermat's important researches on analytic geometry, developed concurrently with, but independently of, Descartes, as well as his method of maxima and minima, based upon which some have proclaimed Fermat the true first discoverer of the differential calculus. It also includes the first printing of Fermat's important correspondence with Pascal which founded the modern theory of probability. There is also correspondence with other contemporary mathematicians, including Mersenne, Roberval, Wallis, Digby, and Gassendi. Although Fermat published practically nothing during his lifetime, his work was freely communicated to others in correspondence and was profoundly influential. Descartes and Pascal notwithstanding, many scholars regard Fermat as the greatest of all 17th-century French mathematicians. Fermat (1601-65), was shy of publicity and reluctant to communicate his findings. As a result, his … [Click Below for Full Description]
