Leigh, Eduardo (Edward Leigh) (Text by); Henricus à Middoch (Translated into Latin by); William Gouge (Commendatory epistle by)
Amstelodami (Amsterdam: Johannis à Someren, 1679. First Latin language edition. Hardcover. g- to g+. Folio (12 3/4 x 8"). [16], 288, [20]pp (Index) (Vol. 1); [20], 418, [30]pp (Index) (Vol. 2). Original full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Main title in red and black lettering, with title vignette. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Edward Leigh. Both volumes have separate titles. Originally published in English, in London in 1639 and 1641, Edward Leigh's magnum opus is divided into two parts: - 1) "Critica Sacra : Observationes Philologicas & Theologicas In omnes Radices Veteris Testamenti" containing observations on all the radices, or primitive Hebrew words of the Old Testament in alphabetical order. - 2) "Critica Sacra : Observationes Philologicas & Theologicas Observationes In omnes Graecas Voces Novi Testamenti" containing observations upon all the Greek words of the New Testament in alphabetical order. This lexicon with its dictionary and index of Biblical words became the classic work and basis for future studies of language by experts such as William Gouge (who wrote the commendatory epistle in the first volume) and Thomas Fuller. This 1679 edition is the first Latin translation by Henricus à Middoch. Binding partly darkened, age-toned, with some abrasion to head and tail of spine. Contemporary previous owners' inscription at upper margin of front free endpaper. Lower corner of fly leaf chipped. Contemporary previous owner's name on main title (not affecting lettering). CANTELLI, Giacomo (1643-1695)
In folio (mm 477x325). [Click Below for Full Description]

GUILLIM, John.
London: Printed by S. Roycroft for R. Blome 1679. "The Fifth Edition, much enlarged with great variety of Bearings. To Which is added a Treatise of Honour, Military and Civil, According to the Laws and Customs of England, collected out of the most Authentick Authors, both Ancient and Modern by Capt. John Logan." A very nice copy - recently bound in quarter calf with burgundy label and marbled boards. Recent end papers. The rest of the book is original and complete. This is an ex library copy, but the stamps are not too disfiguring. A stamp and a couple of location records to the title page. Otherwise some small stamps to the verso of plates. A few of the pages have minor nicking to the edges - but well away from the text. Slight browning to the pages. Overall though, a good clean copy, with nice clear and well pressed engravings in a flawless binding. [xiv], 1-317, [ix]. [ii], 3-181, [ix]. pp + plates and engraved portraits. The first part of the work (Guillim’s) contains hundreds of examples of Arms throughout the text. The second part (the Analogia Honorum) contains 2 engraved dedications, 9 full page portraits and 105 engraved plates containing hundreds of Arms and honours. All uncoloured. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PETTY, Sir William.
London: Obadiah Blagrave, 1679 - Quarto (203 x 152 mm). Recent full calf, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label, double blind-rule to boards with floral corner pieces, sprinkled edges. Title lightly dust soiled with the odd spot, natural paper flaw to margin of final preliminary leaf; a very good copy with generous margins, lower edge entirely uncut. Third edition of Petty's first economic treatise which "followed immediately after the Restoration, when changes in the methods of raising revenue were being discussed. The wide range of his survey is shewn by the headings printed on the title-page" (Keynes). This edition, a reprint of the second of 1667 with minor-corrections in the title-page, was published against Petty's wishes. "Written in the midst of urgent practical tasks, the Treatise was plainly occasioned by another question of great immediate importance - the reorganisation of the Revenue by the Restoration Parliament. However, in contrast to the many economic treatises written in defence of concrete interests, while professing to be unbiased theoretical pronouncements, Petty's work is even more remarkable for its theoretical digressions than for its acute and important analysis of its immediate subject. So far from making any claim to scientific detachment, it contains a devastating attack on his bêtes noires, the parasites on the body politic, primarily the clergy and the lawyers, but its greatest achievement is his searching treatment of the main problems of scientific economics. The book is brimful of brilliant ideas, although it inev … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tavernier, Jean-Baptiste
[Amsterdam], suivant la copie imprimée à Paris, 1679. Small 8vo. (8), 564, (4) pp. With 2 folding engr. maps and 8 folding engr. plates; several woodcuts in the text. Wants the portrait found in some copies. Contemp. dark brown full calf with traces of oxydized giltstamping to spine and gilt leading edges. First Amsterdam reprint: Taviernier's description of the Ottoman Imperial Seraglio - his first published work, which had appeared separately as early as 1675 - here forms the final part of his "Recueil de plusieurs relations et traitez singuliers & curieux", an independent publication which was, from 1679 onwards, appended to the author's "Six voyages en Turquie, en Perse, et aux Indes" (thus ultimately forming that collection's third and final volume). It was this volume, containing Tavernier's studies in commercial politics, that made the author's travels widely known. The fine maps show Japan and Tonquin, the plates depict costumes, a theatre performance, temples, and various processions. A woodcut in the Seraglio section gives the Islamic profession of faith, the Shahada, in Arabic script. "Tavernier spent eleven months in Constantinople before setting out on his first journey. He joined a caravan for Persia in 1638 and, between 1643 and 1668, made six voyages to Persia, India, the East Indies and Japan. During his travels he amassed a large collection of diamonds and jewels. His successful commercial enterprise was recognised by Louis XIV and he was granted a patent of nobility for his contribution to the establishment of French trade in Asia. POULLAIN DE LA BARRE (François)]
- Paris, Antoine Dezallier, 1679. (Alcover, p 26, i. Gay, I, 798. Haag, VIII, 308). Signature ex-libris biffée sur le titre. Quelques rousseurs. Zacchiae, Lanfranci
Romae, ex Typographia Bartholomaei Lupardi Impressoris Cameralis, & Vaticani. 1679. Zacchiae, Lanfranci
Romae, ex Typographia Bartholomaei Lupardi, 1679. One volume in folio; pp. (VIII), 804; later half vellum over marbled boards, corners strengthened, a bit rubbed and bumped at extremities, handwritten title to spine, small worm trace on lower back hinge, title printed in red and black, small stamp and name on title page, some browning and foxing in places, else clean and crisp, a good copy. First combined issue of Zacchia's two main works, first published 1658. "Latin treatise on wages which deserves mention for the rarity of the consideration of the subject in days when he wrote. He distinguishes different forms of wages. He limits himself to the statement that an adequate wage is fixed by a monarch or by law, by customs or by contract.and the person fixing them should take account of the ability of the workman, the quality of his work, and the price of food."
