HIPPOCRATES
1679. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity." ― Hippocrates Known as the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates was a Greek physician from the 4th-century BC. He is recognized for his lasting contributions to the medical field by establishing it as a scientific study and not just a philosophy. One of his most important book was 'Aphorisms' in which Hippocrates wrote short proverbial principles on health and medicine. He discussed the secrets to long life, the importance of a healthy diet, appropriate amount of sleep, cures for pleurisy, pneumonia, melancholia, vertigo, dysentery, epilepsy, coughs, and which season each disease is most likely to occur. This exceedingly rare 17th-century edition of the works of Hippocrates contains the commentary of Giovanni Marinelli, a Modense physician known only for this commentary. [Attributes: First Edition]

Thomas a Kempis
Amsterdam: See pictures. Some rubbing with a dot on the front board, and a few marks. Corners are bumped with paste boards slightly exposed. Some color loss at joints and edges. I think I can see some leather polish in the pores. Gilt edges have faded a little.Inside there is a pencil note on the back of the free front endpaper "4 p 8 s ½". Black spot above title page in upper margin. Annotations in top margin of leaves A2 and A3. Ink dot at fore edge of pages of 40-43. Occasional spots of foxing and soiling (finger smudges along edges) throughout, light.A very handsome small work, whose beauty shows through as a testament to both Padeloup and the Elzevir family. Bound by the bookbinder to King Louis XV, Padeloup, a beautiful 1679 Elzevir family edition of the seminal The Imitation of Christ (in Latin) by Thomas a Kempis, with Dutch Gilt endpapers. This book is discussed by a Padeloup/Dubuisson expert, Mr. Miller, at the website Virtual Bookbindings. I can provide the web address upon request (ebay no longer allows me to put web addresses in ads). About the Binder "Antoine Michel Padeloup was made binder to the king, Louis XV. (17I5--1748), in 1733, after Boyet's death; he placed his mark on books belonging to Queen Maria Leczinska, the Dauphin, D'Hoym, Bonnier de la Mosson, and the Marquise de Pompadour. Padeloup is noted for good solid binding; the decorations he used, though poor in conception, are marvels of careful execution." This popular devotional and supplement to the Bible was a critical part of the early English Church liturgy and doctrine. This edition features the Book of Psalms. This 1679 edition of the Book of Common Prayer is thought to be the first edition to include 'A Form of Prayer" This "Form of Prayer" was printed separately (ESTC R38742) in London in 1666 by John Bill and Christopher Barker, but apparently not included in The Book of Common Prayer until this 1679 Oxford edition. Ludwig XIV., König von Frankreich (1638-1715)
Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 18. II. 9 SS. auf 6 (= 3 Doppel-)Blatt. Folio. "[...] [A] squadron of 20 or 30 ships that I might send to Sweden's aid would be too weak to withstand the forces of England; nor is it suitable to the state of my affairs to [...] support this war by putting to sea a flotilla equal to that Crown's [...] Sweden's affairs are everywhere in such a bad state, yet she does not blame her own ill conduct. I have even learned that her ruin in Prussia is so great that it is no longer possible to negotiate for peace with them until [Sweden is] convinced of the nearly invincible obstacles to naval assistance that they have expected from me [...] [S]ince the greatest … [Click Below for Full Description]

DURANT, J.
"Coloured copper engraving assembled from two sheets by J. Durant after a drawing of Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, 1679. Plate size: 52 x 77 cm. The map occurs only in the first edition of Taverniers ""Recueil de plusieurs relations"". For later editions and/or translations the map was made smaller. It shows many unusual comments about Japan. It contains legends about the nature of the country, e.g. where gold is mined. Okasaki is said to have the most beautiful women. In Lake Biwa one can catch lots of salmon. Worthless youths are sent to an island off Kyushu, where they have to work etc. From a cartographic perspective the most important innovation is the inclusion of the route of the Dutch. At Firando it states that this where they had stayed initially. At Kisma """" a different name for Deshima """" it says that this is where the Dutch are. Also some Dutch ships are depicted. The map is handsomely framed using the highest standards (UV protective glass, acid free paper, wooden, i.e. strong and water resistant, reverse side).Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 - 1689), was born in Paris, where his father Gabriel and uncle Melchior, protestants from Antwerp, pursued the profession of geographers and engravers. The conversations he heard in his father's house inspired Tavernier with an early desire to travel, and in his sixteenth year he had already visited England, the Low Countries and Germany. He was eager to visit the East; and he found the opportunity to join two French fathers, M. de Chapes and M. de St Liebau, who had received a mission to the Levant. In their company he r … [Click Below for Full Description]

1679. Baconiana. Or Certain Genuine Remains of Sr. Francis Bacon, Baron of Verulam, and Viscount of St. Albans; In Arguments Civil and Moral, Natural, Medical, Theological, and Bibliographical; Now the First time faithfully Published. An Account of these Remains, and of all his Lordship's other Works, is given by the Publisher, in a Discourse by way of Introduction. London: Printed by J. D. for Richard Chiswell, 1679. First edition. Complete with the engraved frontispiece portrait and seven separate title pages. This is the third and last of the major collected publications of those works by Sir Francis Bacon that had gone unpublished during his lifetime. It was edited with a long introduction by Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury (uncredited); he was a friend of the son of Bacon's chaplain, William Rawley, who arranged the publication of earlier posthumous collections; Tenison thus had access to Bacon's original manuscripts. First published here are some of Bacon's writings, withheld by Rawley, concerning his investigation of the conspiracy to poison Sir Thomas Overbury; a long letter from Bacon to King James, written after his political downfall; a fragment of his Abecedarium Naturae, an apparent attempt to develop a 'natural alphabet', the letters of which would correspond directly to physical essences, allowing for the systematic decipherment of the natural world; other scientific and medical works, from descriptions of various chemical experiments to his recipe for a chicken broth to cure kidney stones; his questions about the lawfulness of war for the purpose of … [Click Below for Full Description]

COMENIUS Johann Amos
" - Michaelis & Joh. Friderici Endterorum, Noribergae [Nuremberg] 1679, in-8 (11x18cm), (32) 603pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

Kusel, Melchior. Bible Engravings
Melchior Kusel - Johann Leonhard Buggel, Augustano - Nurnberg. Augustano - Nurnberg: Melchior Kusel - Johann Leonhard Buggel, 1679. First edition [1679-80]. In German. Imperfect copy with an interesting provenance. Book of beautifully produced engravings of scenes from the Old and New Testaments, previously owned by George W. Van Horne [1833-1895], appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Consul at Marsailles. Includes an 1870 letter signed by Van Horne discussing how he purchased the book from a certain bookseller "of the highest reputation for integrity" and that it was one of only thirty copies printed, which we now strongly suspect to be untrue. What the bookseller also neglected to inform him was that there are 11 (of 249) plates missing, with no evidence that they were ever bound in. Full contemporary leather with red spine label, raised spine bands with compartments decorated with a pomegranate motif, a total of 238 plates printed on one side only, six page of text, title page, dedication, engraved pages dividing the sections, colophon. Covers rubbed at the edges with partial surface crack to the front joint, covers well attached, text block sound, partially removed and unidentiable armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, neatly written note in French (appears to relate to a book catalogue dated 1827) on the front free endpaper, pages clean with occasional light foxing, chips to two edges, long horizontal closed tear to one section title, two plates bound out of order. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; H … [Click Below for Full Description]
