Tavernier, Jean-Baptiste.
Small 8vo. (8), 564, (4) pp. With 2 folding engr. maps and 8 folding engr. plates; several woodcuts in the text. Wants the portrait found in some copies. Contemp. dark brown full calf with traces of oxydized giltstamping to spine and gilt leading edges. First Amsterdam reprint: Taviernier's description of the Ottoman Imperial Seraglio - his first published work, which had appeared separately as early as 1675 - here forms the final part of his "Recueil de plusieurs relations et traitez singuliers & curieux", an independent publication which was, from 1679 onwards, appended to the author's "Six voyages en Turquie, en Perse, et aux Indes" (thus ultimately forming that collection's third and final volume). It was this volume, containing Tavernier's studies in commercial politics, that made the author's travels widely known. The fine maps show Japan and Tonquin, the plates depict costumes, a theatre performance, temples, and various processions. A woodcut in the Seraglio section gives the Islamic profession of faith, the Shahada, in Arabic script. "Tavernier spent eleven months in Constantinople before setting out on his first journey. He joined a caravan for Persia in 1638 and, between 1643 and 1668, made six voyages to Persia, India, the East Indies and Japan. During his travels he amassed a large collection of diamonds and jewels. His successful commercial enterprise was recognised by Louis XIV and he was granted a patent of nobility for his contribution to the establishment of French trade in Asia. It was Tavernier who indicated the trade routes to the East and made it possi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CANTELLI, Giacomo (1643-1695)
In folio (mm 477x325). [Click Below for Full Description]

BARTOLI DANIELLO
Roma, a spese di Nicolò Angelo Tinassi, 1679. Cm. 20, pp. (16) 330 (2). Con numerose ill. xilografiche n.t.; bei finalini e graziosi capilettera. Legatura coeva in pergamena rigida; tagli spruzzati. Abile restauro al dorso. Esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Rarissima prima edizione. Cfr. Iccu; Wellcome, II, p. 109; Gamba, 1775; Olschki, Choix, 6068. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[France, Conseil d'Etat]
[Paris, 1679. Broadside, 48 x 35.5 cm. Folded, large dampstain affecting top and bottom, else very good. This broadside is signed in print: "Saint Germain en Lay, 24 Oct. 1679...Colbert." One of the chronic problems faced by France was a shortage of shipping, which put the country at a disadvantage in dealing with the maritime powers of her neighbors, England and the Netherlands. To correct this, Colbert instructs (translated from the French): "In order to encourage his subjects in navigation and maritime commerce, the king decrees that anyone who builds a boat in the ports and harbors of the kingdom of more than 100 tons capacity will receive 100 sols per ton." There are instructions for the broadside to be posted at docks and mercantile exchanges so that no one can claim ignorance. Not in the NUC.

Cont. vellum. fine copy. with 2 page folding plate on the arithmetical instrument invented by Grillet. Contains furthermore papers on hydraulic engineering, fortifications " Five years later, in 1678, in the earliest scientific journal published in Europe the french Le Journal des Sçavans, appeared a short description (3 pages text and 1 page sketch) of the device, so called nouvelle machine d'arithmétique. René Grillet obviously was so obsessed with keeping his design of the machine a secret, that he does very little to enlighten its mode of operation. After telling his readers that the idea for the machine stemmed from the rulers of Napier, mentioning that Pascal had invented an admirable machine for doing arithmetic, and that Petit had given us a cylindre artihmetique (the French physicist Pierre Petit created in early 1650s a kind of Napier's bones engraved on a cylinder), Grillet stated that his device combines the wheels of Pascal with the cylinder of Petit, in order to provide a wonderful machine, which would perform all the arithmetic operations."= History of computer KEYWORDS: scientific instruments mathematics hydraulic engineering / flooding.

MERIAN, Matthaeus (1593-1650).
Franckfurt am Mayn, 1679. - Folio (13 4/8 x 8 inches). Additional engraved title-page (short marginal tear just entering the image), double-page engraved maps of Europe and Germany, and 44 leaves of engraved views and plans, and 43 vignette portraits (one or two pale marginal stains towards the end). 18th-century blind paneled pigskin (scuffed). Provenance: small ink library stamps on the front paste-down and the title-page; 20th-century armorial bookplate of Else Grafin von Rittberg on the front paste-down. The second volume of Merian's "Theatrum Europaeum", covering the years 1629-1633, and first published in 1633. The volume is illustrated with plates chronicling the sieges and military actions of the Thirty Years' War, which was fought between 1618 and 1648 in and around modern day Germany. At various points it involved most countries in Western Europe. One of the most destructive conflicts in European history, the war was largely a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire, although disputes over the internal politics and balance of power within the Empire were also significant. The "Theatrum Europaeum" was a 'colossal historical work' (Shirley) stretching to 21 individual volumes published between 1635 and 1738. "The various parts cover events in Europe over a complete century between 1617 and 1718, comprising more than 20,000 pages of text, approximately 720 maps, plans, views and other prints and nearly 700 portraits. Many items reflect sieges and military actions during, first, the Thirty Years' War, then the several campaigns ag … [Click Below for Full Description]
