Baconiana. Or Certain Genuine Remains of Sr. Francis Bacon, Baron of Verulam, and Viscount of St. Albans; In Arguments Civil and Moral, Natural, Medical, Theological, and Bibliographical; Now the First time faithfully Published. An Account of these Remains, and of all his Lordship's other Works, is given by the Publisher, in a Discourse by way of Introduction. London: Printed by J. D. for Richard Chiswell, 1679. First edition. Complete with the engraved frontispiece portrait and seven separate title pages. This is the third and last of the major collected publications of those works by Sir Francis Bacon that had gone unpublished during his lifetime. It was edited with a long introduction by Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury (uncredited); he was a friend of the son of Bacon's chaplain, William Rawley, who arranged the publication of earlier posthumous collections; Tenison thus had access to Bacon's original manuscripts. First published here are some of Bacon's writings, withheld by Rawley, concerning his investigation of the conspiracy to poison Sir Thomas Overbury; a long letter from Bacon to King James, written after his political downfall; a fragment of his Abecedarium Naturae, an apparent attempt to develop a 'natural alphabet', the letters of which would correspond directly to physical essences, allowing for the systematic decipherment of the natural world; other scientific and medical works, from descriptions of various chemical experiments to his recipe for a chicken broth to cure kidney stones; his questions about the lawfulness of war for the purpose of sprea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Imperfect copy with an interesting provenance. Book of beautifully produced engravings of scenes from the Old and New Testaments, previously owned by George W. Van Horne [1833-1895], appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Consul at Marsailles. Includes an 1870 letter signed by Van Horne discussing how he purchased the book from a certain bookseller "of the highest reputation for integrity" and that it was one of only thirty copies printed, which we now strongly suspect to be untrue.

Ulm Matthaus Wagner fur Matthaus Schultes 1679. With an engraved frontispiece and 117 numbered woodcuts by Hans Burgkmair, Leopold Schaufelein, Leonhard Beck and others reprinted from the sixteenth century plates, engraved initials and tail-pieces throughout. Folio, in antique half vellum over marbled boards, with institutional gold wax seal on upper board, spine lettered in manuscript. 125 ff; 58 pp. Very handsomely preserved and a very pleasing copy with a bit of age evidence to the binding and some mellowing to the prelims. A FINE EARLY ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR GERMAN ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. The poem is an allegorical chivalric romance celebrating the exploits of the hero (Emperor Maximilian I) in overcoming a series of obstacles in his journey to seek the hand in marriage of Queen Ernreich (Mary of Burgundy) in 1478. Parts of the text were composed by Maximilian himself, who had made the first drafts in 1505-8; his private secretary Melchior Pfintzing oversaw completion of the poem and edited the work. Other contributors were Maximilian's Silberkammerer Sigismund von Dietrichstein and his Geheimsekretar Marx Treitzsauerwein; Johann Stabius and the humanist Conrad Peutinger worked with the printers and artists. A contract survives dated 17 December 1508, in which Maximilian awarded the Augsburg printer Schonsperger, a specialist in the production of German illustrated books, the post of Imperial printer for life, at an annual salary of 10 florins. This printing contains additional preliminary material by Matthaus Schultes and a 58 page wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Becher, Johann Joachim - ALCHEMY - CHEMISTRY - INVENTION
Frankfurt: , 1680 / 1679. Frankfurt, 1680 / 1679. First German language translations.. Contemporary stiff vellum with hand inked title on the spine; modern slip case.. Very good; some overall toning. Early armorial bookplate on the verso of the first title page of Johannes Samuel Ploennies.. 8vo. I - 192; II - 175,[15]; III - 156,[4]; IV - 54 pp. The author was a contemporary whom Boyle read and adapted. Partington relates that Boyle was present at Windsor when Becher demonstrated his technique for the conversion of coal to coke for smelting iron. He was also commercial advisor and counselor to Leopold I. He is credited with having conceived of the doctrine of Phlogiston and to have been among the most active investigators and chemical experimenters of the 17th century. Item I is a vernacular language [German] edition of the first supplement to his important Acta laboratorii chymici ..... This contains Becher's defense of his alchemical studies against the skepticism of W Rolfinck. The second item, despite the title, deals with the chemistry of transmutation. III is Becher's 'book of secrets' a detailed discussion of his chemical theories applied to the arts and medicine. IV is a description of a method of separating gold from sea sand by smelting, an improved water-mill design, and finally a device to spin silk thread from cocoons that the author had sold to the city of Haarlem in 1679. Items I - III were translated into German by Becher himself and undoubtedly contain changes from the original Latin printings. Each item is separately paginated and signed. MERCKLIN, Georg Abraham (?-1700). -
Nürnberg, Zieger, 1679. Small 8vo. Contemp. marbled boards; corners worn, extremities of spine defective. With an engr. frontispiece. (26), 112, (4) pp.; a fresh copy. First (only ?) edition of one of the earliest treatises on blood transfusions and its history. Mercklin, a German doctor, describes the attempts of some contemporaries, such as Andreas Libavius, Giovanni Colle, Richard Lower, J. B. Dennis, etc., and examines various kinds of transfusions (also from animals to man!). It is not surprising, however, that in view of the knowledge of the time, he emphasizes the dangers of the operation and is doubtful about its usefulness. Osler 3384. Waller 6748. Eimas 653. Krivatsy 7774. Bound at the beginning are four works on haematology by Moritz Hoffman (1622 - 98), mentioned by Mercklin as "fautor meus venerandus", published at Altdorf in 1663 and later, each one of about 70 pp., three of which are in Krivatsy (5891, 5887, and 5890).

Sabbathier, E.]
Paris, Mmme Jablier, 1679. Very small folio (17.2 x 12.3 cm). Title page (printed strips, mounted, as issued) and 24 printed and partly engraved oblong sheets, mounted. Contemporary blind marbled wrappers. The very rare Latin edition (there is an equally rare French edition as well), of a work that was printed on a single broadsheet, but distributed only in the present form. This complex, esoteric, Kabbalistic work was written by the Capuchin priest Sabbathier. After his untimely death, his fellow Capuchin François Marie edited the material and oversaw the production of the text on an engraved broadsheet: half in Latin, half in French. As stated on the title, Marie's sister, Mlle. Jablier, acted as publisher. However, she cut the large engraved sheets into smaller components and mounted them in albums, which she then sold from her house in the rue Vieille-du-Temple in Paris. According to Caillet, "[t]his unusual scheme explains the extreme rarity of copies that survived, and their singular appearance". In 1897, it was reprinted in only 100 copies, and advertised as "ouvrage introuvable et purement cabbalistique". This, however, is the much rarer original. Caillet III, 9731 (pp. 449-450), "Excessivement rare". Very good. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]
