Two volume edition of the complete works of Cassiodorus as interpreted by Jean Garet. flavors Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator was a Roman statesman and scholar who served in the administration of Theodoric the Great as well as founding a monastery in his retirement. Browning, rebound in modern half morocco with marbled boards, gilt lettered morocco title label to spine.Scarce first publication. ESTC R5964 'Anonymous. By John Oldham. In verse. Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), O243 Brooks, Harold F. Bibliography of John Oldham, 3.' ODNB '... His first poem to achieve renown was 'Aude a liquid. Ode' (written in 1676 at Croydon), which circulated in manuscript and appeared in a pirated printed edition in 1679 under the misleading title A Satyr Against Vertue. This was imagined to be Rochester's speech on smashing the phallic glass sundials in the king's privy garden in 1675, and its satirical impersonation of Rochester's libertine stance drew an appreciative visit from the earl and his entourage. The 'Dithyrambique on Drinking: Suppos'd to be Spoken by Rochester at the Guinny-Club' and 'Sardanapalus', an erotic heroic extravaganza too obscene for publication, completed a trio of poems satirically mimicking libertine attitudes with such bravura that some readers failed to see their ironic purpose ...'

AFRIKA ( Africa ):
dat. 1679, 57 x 90,5 Extremely rare map of Africa! Betz, Mapping of Africa, Nr. 113. 2 (our copy, no further examples mentioned). Schilder, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica, Bd. 5, p. 199-207; not in Norwich, Maps of Africa; not in Tooley, Maps of Africa. - A reduction to two sheets of Willem Blaeu's 1608 wall map of Africa but with further and newer informations. According to Betz, Rossi used cartographic elements from C. Danckerts wall map from 1647, he even copied the cartouche but leaving it without text. The two copperplates were engraved by Daniel Vidman (Schilder, p. 202) possibly as early as 1653. Vidman was contracted by Giovanni Domenico de Rossi, the brother of Giovanni Giacomo, to engrave reduced versions of Blaeu's wall maps of the continents. All of them are really rare (for the map of America see Burden, The Mapping of North America, 408. He also mentions two states 1670 and 1679 and only one copy of each state were known to him). Two sheets joined, very good impression, good and wide margins, two minor restorations in the map (wormholes), otherwise in perfect condition.

SPENSER, Edmund
Henry Hills for Jonathan Edwin, at the Three Roses in Ludgate-street. 1679 RARE Edmund Spenser Faerie Queene Shepherds Calendar Estrange Fairy Queen For there is nothing lost, that may be found, if sought. Edmund Spenser, The Faerie Queene Edmund Spenser is one of the most well-known 16th-century English poets. His most-famous poem, The Faerie Queene is one of fantasy and allegory that celebrated the Tudors and Queen Elizabeth. Spenser explores human emotion, consciousness, and conflict and drew much of his influence from Italian greats Ariosto and Tasso. He embodied Elizabethan values and British history, but he also wanted to have literary freedom balancing history and myth. Samuel Johnson was well-versed with The Faerie Queene as it was a useful source for obsolete and archaic words as he was organizing his Dictionary . This volume from Roger L Estrange s 1679 folio edition features the most famous works of Spenser, Fairy Queen and Shepherd s Calendar , as well as a History of Ireland . While it is unknown for sure, the DNB suggests that this edition was edited by John Dryden. Item number: #5606 Price: $1950 SPENSER, Edmund The works of that famous English poet, Mr. Edmond Spenser. SPENSER, Edmund
London: Henry Hills for Jonathan Edwin, 1679. Folio. Sometime rebound in half brown morocco, gilt lettering to spine, marbled boards, marbled endpapers, t.e.g.; pp. [x],339,[i],16,[8],2,10-11,9-11,10-11, 14-258, 369-391, [i], frontispeice engraving of Spenser's tomb; hinges a little rubbed, occasional spotting, previous owner's signature partially erased from title page, very good. First complete edition, first state. The pagination of this volume is extremely eccentric but is as issued. This is the third folio edition of Spenser's poetry but the first to contain his complete works, including his prose View of the Tate of Ireland and Bathurst's Latin translation of The Shepherd's Calendar. It has been suggested by the DNB that John Dryden was the anonymous editor of this edition. Edmund Spenser is probably best known for his allegorical poem The Faery Queene, at one time the longest poem in the English language. The poem was published with the help of Sir Walter Raleigh, who persuaded Spenser to accompany him back to England to present the completed portion of the work to Queen Elizabeth. Another item, Mother Hubberd’s Tale, caused the authorities to withdraw unsold copies of the volume because it contained a covert attack on Lord Burghley, who was one of the most powerful figures of the court. Nevertheless, in 1591 Queen Elizabeth gave Spenser a small pension for life, in recognition of his writing. An equally important poem is The Shepheardes Calender, one of the first works of the English literary Renaissance. Spenser's first major poetic work, it consists of twelve ec … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed by S. Roycroft for R. Blome: 1679. "The Fifth Edition, much enlarged with great variety of Bearings. To Which is added a Treatise of Honour, Military and Civil, According to the Laws and Customs of England, collected out of the most Authentick Authors, both Ancient and Modern by Capt. John Logan."<br />A very nice copy - recently bound in quarter calf with burgundy label and marbled boards. Recent end papers. The rest of the book is original and complete. This is an ex library copy, but the stamps are not too disfiguring. A stamp and a couple of location records to the title page. Otherwise some small stamps to the verso of plates. A few of the pages have minor nicking to the edges - but well away from the text. Slight browning to the pages. Overall though, a good clean copy, with nice clear and well pressed engravings in a flawless binding. [xiv], 1-317, [ix]. [ii], 3-181, [ix]. pp + plates and engraved portraits. The first part of the work (Guillim's) contains hundreds of examples of Arms throughout the text. "Especially skilful and indefatigable in the grinding of lenses was Antonj van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), chamberlain (janitor) of the Council Chamber of the Worshipful Sheriffs of Delft, Holland, and otherwise employed in a linen drapery shop. The Dutchman Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680) and the Italian Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) are often credited with describing the red blood corpuscles before Leeuwenhoek, but Swammerdam only referred to the presence of "ruddy globules" in the blood and doubted that blood in its vessels contains such globules, while Malpighi's interest seems to have been only casual. It is Leeuwenhoek, therefore, who deserves the credit for having provided the first real description of the red blood cells. He was untutored and had had little formal education, but he was a person of infinite curiosity and patience. He examined his own blood, described the red corpuscles, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kusel, Melchior. Bible Engravings
Augustano - Nurnberg: Melchior Kusel - Johann Leonhard Buggel, 1679. First edition [1679-80]. In German. Imperfect copy with an interesting provenance. Book of beautifully produced engravings of scenes from the Old and New Testaments, previously owned by George W. Van Horne [1833-1895], appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Consul at Marsailles. Includes an 1870 letter signed by Van Horne discussing how he purchased the book from a certain bookseller "of the highest reputation for integrity" and that it was one of only thirty copies printed, which we now strongly suspect to be untrue. What the bookseller also neglected to inform him was that there are 11 (of 249) plates missing, with no evidence that they were ever bound in. Full contemporary leather with red spine label, raised spine bands with compartments decorated with a pomegranate motif, a total of 238 plates printed on one side only, six page of text, title page, dedication, engraved pages dividing the sections, colophon. Covers rubbed at the edges with partial surface crack to the front joint, covers well attached, text block sound, partially removed and unidentiable armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, neatly written note in French (appears to relate to a book catalogue dated 1827) on the front free endpaper, pages clean with occasional light foxing, chips to two edges, long horizontal closed tear to one section title, two plates bound out of order.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.

Evelyn, John
London: Printed for John Martyn, Printer to the Royal Society, 1679. Third edition, "much inlarged, and improved," etc. Illustrated with 5 copper-engravings in the text, including one full-page. 1 vols. Folio. Evelyn's Sylva , first published in 1664, is a treatise on forestry, written to promote the cultivation of timber for building the Royal Navy. As Disraeli wrote: "It was an author in his studious retreat, who, casting a prophetic eye on the age we live in, secured the late victories of our national sovereignty. Inquire at the Admiralty how the fleets of Nelson have been constructed and they can tell you that it was with the oaks that the genius of Evelyn planted." This is the first edition to include Abraham Cowley's poem, "The Garden" and Evelyn's "Philosophical Discourse of the Earth", in second edition (published separately in 1676); "Pomona" is of the third edition; and "Kalendarium Hortense" is of the fifth edition; the errata leaf is present. Wing E 3518; Keynes 42; Blanche Henrey 134JC-NY/FL/1. Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked. Black morocco spine label. Very good, with generous margins.
