The Unlawfulnesse of Subjects, Taking up Armes Against Their...

1679. An Artful Defense of King Charles I Diggs, Dudley [1613-1643]. The Unlawfulness of Subjects Taking up Arms Against Their Soveraigne, In What Case Soever. Together with Answers to All Objections. A Work Very Seasonable for These Times, And May Serve as a Curb to the Treasonable Practices of Jesuits and Other State-Incendiaries. London: Printed for Peter Parker, 1679. [viii], 144, 155-170, 137-168 pp. Pagination irregular. Text complete. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4-1/4"). Recent period-style three-quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt-edged raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Moderate toning to text, faint dampstaining to a few leaves. Ex-library. Small inkstamp to title page and one other leaf. A handsome copy. * Fifth and final edition. Derived in part from Bracton, Diggs's eloquent defense of the passive obedience of subjects contends that the king is under law as a moral proposition only, which precludes justified rebellion. It was originally published in 1644 as a defense of Charles II. This 1679 reissue was probably a response to the decision of Charles II to dissolve Parliament to prevent its impeachment of Lord Danby, who supervised the investigation into the "Popish Plot." Danby dismissed the plot as a fabrication, which angered Parliament. English Short-Title Catalogue R14579.

This is the first published work by Espionsa, the great Franciscan chronicler of the middle third of the 18th century. He was born in Queretaro, Mexico, in 1679, was educated there, and on 19 March 1697 began his career as a Franciscan; he took holy orders on 17 December 1703. Between 1709 and 1721 he participated in several expeditions to Texas: those of Captain Pedro de Aguirre, Domingo Ramón, Martín de Alarcón, and the Marques of San Miguel de Aguayo. While Espinosa is most famous for his writings on Texas and his fellow Texas missionary Antonio Margil de Jesus, this biography is of Fray Antonio de los Angeles Bustamante, the beloved porter of the Franciscan monastery in Queretaro. Fray Antonio was a lay cleric, a Spanish immigrant who arrived in Mexico as a boy and as an adult had a successful career in business which he abandoned to enter the monastic life. => A full biography of such an "ordinary Joe" in the 18th century is most unusual. The volume offers an => excellent copper-engraved portrait by Joaquín Sotomayor of Fray Antonio with the keys of his office and the symbols representing his responsibility of giving bread and water to those begging at the monastery door. The book is from the press of master printer Hogal, considered to be the Ibarra (or Baskerville) of Mexico. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate fewer than a dozen copies in U.S. libraries.

Leser" wichtig. – Titel verso mit gelöschtem Bibliotheksstempel. Gestoch. Titel im Rand ansgefranst (ohne Bildverlust). Unterschiedlich gebräunt, gutes Exemplar. – VD17 3:004325S und 3:004329X; Dünnhaupt 100; Goed.         ALS, signed as Duke of York ("James"), to Samuel Pepys

The Hague, 1679. Bifolium with integral blank & autograph address leaf, monogrammed red seal. 4to. Some old folds, paper slightly toned, but very good. In quarter morocco slipcase with the bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Bifolium with integral blank & autograph address leaf, monogrammed red seal. 4to. Prior to becoming king, James II acted as lord high admiral from 1660-73. ODNB says, he was "no mere figurehead ... but took an active interest in naval affairs." He had a small board of seven men to assist him, Samuel Pepys served among them as clerk of the acts. James took his role so seriously that he was present on ships engaged in both the second and third Anglo-Dutch wars until being forbidden by Charles II from further endangering his life. This letter was written at the time of the Popish plot, and in order to quell any suspicion of involvement, James went abroad to Brussels and later Scotland where he was "virtual viceroy". Pepys lasting claim to fame is, of course, his diary. However, the substance of his life's work and thus the diary itself was through his work as an official in the Admiralty, not least as Secretary of the Royal Navy when he was commissioned to report on the condition of the Navy, which, after "five years of uninterruped Peace" and incompetent administration, had been reduced "to a Condition of being with difficulty kept above Water". In addition to assisting James II, Pepys had also been on a committee to run Tangiers from 1672-79. So it was only natural that the two would correspond on matters regarding it. The letter is an excellent example of his correspondence with Pepys. It reads in part, "I had recived yours in which you gave an account of the losse of the marigold prise at Tanger. I hope that we shall now sone heare of the arrival of Sr. J. Narborough for then we shall have some more strength at home, though not so much as I thinke aught to be at sea, considering the French are fitting out..." John Narborough had been stationed in the Mediterranean for the previous five years in order to combat attacks by corsairs on British shipping. At the time of writing he was in command of the Plymouth with a fleet of thirty-five vessels. He still encountered difficulties against the strength of Algerine forces. The fate of the Marigold was emblematic of Narborough's troubles. The 44 gun fourth rate ship that was captured in 1677 and then wrecked in 1679, the same year the fleet was called back to England. A fine letter involving three vital figures in the Royal Navy. Samuel Pepys, Diary and Correspondence of Samuel Pepys ... in the Reigns of Charles II and James II ... (London, 1883) vol 4, p211

1679 Athanasius of Alexandria Egypt 2v Set Coptic Orthodox Bishop Arianism Arius

A Paris : Chez Antoine Dezallier ., M. DC. LXXIX. 1679 - 1679 Athanasius of Alexandria Egypt 2v Set Coptic Orthodox Bishop Arianism Arius Arius (AD 250 or 256–336) was a Christian ascetic and presbyter of Libyan birth, possibly of Berber extraction, and priest in Alexandria, Egypt, of the church of the Baucalis. His teachings about the nature of the Godhead, which emphasized the Father's divinity over the Son, and his opposition to what would become the dominant Christology, Homoousian Christology, made him a primary topic of the First Council of Nicea, convened by Roman Emperor Constantine in AD 325. Athanasius of Alexandria (296 – 373) was the bishop (patriarch) of Alexandria from 328 until his death (despite five exiles). He was a major figure in early Christianity: the Coptic Orthodox Church, and was called the "Apostolic", the "Lighthouse of the East" and "Faith Column". Orthodox churches celebrate him as among the four great doctors of the Church. We do not find any other 17th-century printings of this book for sale anywhere else worldwide!         Japan map - Durant after Tavernier.

Coloured copper engraving assembled from two sheets by J. Durant after a drawing of Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, 1679. Plate size: 52 x 77 cm. The map occurs only in the first edition of Taverniers "Recueil de plusieurs relations". For later editions and/or translations the map was made smaller. It shows many unusual comments about Japan. It contains legends about the nature of the country, e.g. where gold is mined. Okasaki is said to have the most beautiful women. In Lake Biwa one can catch lots of salmon. Worthless youths are sent to an island off Kyushu, where they have to work etc. From a cartographic perspective the most important innovation is the inclusion of the route of the Dutch. At Firando it states that this where they had stayed initially. At Kisma '" a different name for Deshima '" it says that this is where the Dutch are. Also some Dutch ships are depicted. The map is handsomely framed using the highest standards (UV protective glass, acid free paper, wooden, i.e. strong and water resistant, reverse side).Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 - 1689), was born in Paris, where his father Gabriel and uncle Melchior, protestants from Antwerp, pursued the profession of geographers and engravers. The conversations he heard in his father's house inspired Tavernier with an early desire to travel, and in his sixteenth year he had already visited England, the Low Countries and Germany. He was eager to visit the East; and he found the opportunity to join two French fathers, M. de Chapes and M. de St Liebau, who had received a mission to the Levant. In their company he reached Constantinople early in 1631, and then proceeded via Erivan to Persia. His farthest point in this first journey was Isfahan; he returned by Baghdad, Aleppo, Alexandretta, Malta and Italy, and was again in Paris in 1633.In September 1638 he began a second journey (1638-43) continuing to India as far as Agra and Golconda. His visit to the court of the Great Mogul and to the diamond mines was connected with the plans realised more fully in his later voyages, in which Tavernier travelled as a merchant of the highest rank, trading in costly jewels and other precious wares, and finding his chief customers among the greatest princes of the East. The second journey was followed by four others. In his third (1643-49) he went as far as Java, and returned by the Cape; but his relations with the Dutch proved not wholly satisfactory, and a long lawsuit on his return yielded but imperfect redress. In his last three journeys (1651-55, 1657-62, 1664-68) he did not proceed beyond India. The details of these voyages are often obscure; but they completed an extraordinary knowledge of the routes of overland Eastern trade, and brought the now famous merchant into close and friendly communication with the greatest Oriental potentates. They also secured for him a large fortune and great reputation at home. He was presented to Louis XIV, in whose service he had travelled sixty thousand leagues by land, received letters of nobility and in the following year purchased the barony of Aubonne, near Geneva. In 1662 he had married Madeleine Goisse, daughter of a Parisian jeweller. Thus settled in ease and affluence, Tavernier occupied himself, as it would seem at the desire of the king, in publishing the account of his journeys. He had neither the equipment nor the tastes of a scientific traveller, but in all that referred to commerce his knowledge was vast and could not fail to be of much public service. He set to produce "Le Six Voyages de J. B. Tavernier"' in 1676 and supplemented it with the "Recueil de Plusieurs Relations"' in 1679. This last contains an account of Japan, gathered from merchants and others. Reference: Walter 35 u. OAG 40; Campbell 27; Cortazzi p. 46/7 and pl. 71. Price: € 2.650,- (excl. VAT/BTW, incl. frame).

Bel exemplaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: William Bromwich, 1679 A fair copy of the first edition of a very scarce work, with some interesting additions by a previous owner. Partridge (1644-1714), who taught himself Latin and Greek, set out to reform Astrology and remove 'arabic' influences. This work set out to form a brief but comprehensive guide to the subject. This copy is in a full leather binding, with contemporary boards, which have a blind-tooled design, and a newer spine. The endpapers were replaced and additional blank pages added. Internally there is a plate labeled 'frontispiece' but it is not clear if it is from this work. An R Rogers has put the date 1763, his name and some astrological signs on the facing blank, which forms the verso to the publication licence (dated Sept 14, 1678). R Rogers has then drawn an astrological design on the next facing blank, which is the verso to the frontispiece portrait of Partridge. The title page is dated 1679, and is followed by blank; dedication to Sir George Wharton 4pp; Letter from John Gadbury 6pp; To the Reader 8pp; Poem to JP by Thos Trigge and further poems 4pp; half title to Table; Table 13pp; The Ephemerides Explained 2pp; Contents and Errata 2pp; Text pp 1-76; title page for continuation 1679; blank; text pp 79-231; blank; title page for continuation 1679; text pp 235-274; A Century of Choice Aphorisms J Gadbury pp 274-348 Finis. A hand-written advertisement page has been added in - with the name J H Gent, and the date 1665. The binding has general wear to the boards with some corner loss. The newer spine has wear at the joints and edges. Internally the paper is brown toned and a little fragile at the edges. There are numerous annotations, possibly again by R Rogers, with some words being lightly ruled through. A small slip has been added to the base of p285. This was clearly a book which was much used. There is some worm damage which begins with a small hole in the bottom margin of p160. It becomes more pronounced at p213 through to circa p 242 - again mainly in the bottom margin. Some pages have had archive quality tape repair to the bottom margin in the gutter area. There is a small impact on the text, particularly the title page before p 235 in the bottom gutter area. An interesting work which has been priced to take account of condition. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

La Mer de Nort ou sont la N.le France, La Floride, La N.le Espagne, Les Isles et la Terre-ferme d'Amerique

Paris: Chez l'Auteur, 1679. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. Scarce 17th century mapping of America. This superb map of the New World evinces mid-seventeenth century French geographical knowledge, based largely upon the work of the great French cartographer, Nicolas Sanson, Duval's father-in-law. It is also an excellent example of the French cartographic aesthetic, exalting clarity and classical elegance. Duval, with some geographical modernizations, based this map on his smaller 1655 rendering of the same subject. The depiction of the American Northeast is somewhat more progressive than that shown by Sanson. New York, Boston, Cape Cod, Virginia and Maryland are each specifically named. Up into the interior, Duval shows all five Great Lakes, however the boundaries of Lakes Superior and Michigan ("Lac des Puans") are left undetermined. Most of the American Southeast is shown as a part of the great Spanish territory of "Floride," which extends north into the Carolinas. South Carolina is labeled "Floride Françoise," and "Charles-Fort," the abortive French settlement on Port Royal Sound from the 1560s, is labeled here. This map appeared as the top right sheet of Duval's four sheet wall map, titled Carte de Geographie: "All [i.e. each sheet] were designed with individual titles so that they could be viewed independently or when these were removed they could be pasted together to form a large wall map" (Burden). The present example is from the first state of the map. Burden, The Mapping of North America II:508.
