SPINOZA, Benedict de].
[Amsterdam, Jan Rieuwertsz]. Small 4to, pp. [xl], 614, [32] index, [2], 112, [8]; without the engraved frontispiece portrait, which was produced separately and 'which is found in only a very small number of copies' (Wolf); woodcut vignette on title; some light toning to a few pages, else a fine, crisp copy in recent leather-backed boards apparently commissioned by A.N.L. Munby (see below); contemporary ownership inscription (Samuel Parr, see below) to the title-page.First appearance of Spinoza's Ethic, his philosophical masterpiece, and first edition of the Opera posthuma, which 'have served, then and since, with the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, to immortalize his name' (PMM 153).The collection was published by Jan Rieuwertsz, an Amsterdam bookseller and friend of Spinoza, and edited by him together with the merchant Jarig Jelles, who probably wrote the preface. It contains the first publication of the Ethics. The remainder comprises the Tractatus Politicus– his last, unfinished production, which develops a theory of law and government akin to that of Hobbes; the Tractatus de Intellectus Emendatione, also unfinished; a selection of letters– restricted, owing to the dangers of publishing correspondence on questions of politics and theology; and, after an index, a Compendium Grammatices Linguae Hebraeae, paginated separately. The Opera Posthuma do not amount to all the previously unpublished works of Spinoza: the Treatise on the Rainbow is missing– it was thought lost, and not published until 1687– as is the early Tractatus de Deo et Homine Eiusque Felicitate, which prefig … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Leather covered boards, 4 raised spine bands, leather spine title label, spine compartments decorated in gilt, 8vo, 9.5x7 inches (25x17 cm). Pagination: [28], 702, [22] pages. TEXT IN FRENCH. Illustrated with a gorgeous engraved added title page, engraved device on the text title page, and engraved head and tail pieces for each chapter. First printing of the Jesuit historian Louis Maimbourg's account of the Greek schism / the Great Schism of 1054, which broke the Christian Church into the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches. Overall a very nice copy with printing that is bright and clear. This book was republished numerous times starting in 1678. THIS 1677 FIRST EDITION IS RARE. Laid in is the previous owner's invoice. In 2001 the book was sold by Kenneth Karmiole, an ABAA bookseller in Santa Monica, to the previous owner for $394 (it was priced at $475, but he gave the buyer a 17% discount). 1677. London, 1677. Devotional Writings of Sir Matthew Hale [Hale, Sir Matthew (1609-1676)]. Contemplations Moral and Divine. By a Person of Great Learning and Judgment. Imprimatur. Ex Aedibus Lambethanis, Martii 13. 1675/6. Antonius Saunders, Reverendissimo Dno, Domino Gilberto Archi-Episc. Cant. A Sacris Domesticis. London: Printed by William Godbid, For William Shrowsbury, 1677. [xvi], 528 pp. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4"). Later period-style calf, blind fillets to boards, raised bands, blind ornaments and lettering piece to spine, edges rouged, marbled endpapers. A few minor scratches and nicks to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, spine ends bumped, hinges cracked. Moderate toning to text, occasional faint dampstaining to upper corners of text block, light foxing to a few leaves, title page has brief early annotation (identifying Hale as author) in miniscule hand. $500. * Second edition. One of the great English jurists of the seventeenth century, Hale was chief baron of the Exchequer from 1660 to 1666, when he became chief justice of the King's Bench. The Contemplations, a collection of spiritual essays and poems, indicate the depth of his religiosity. This is especially evident in such pieces as "Of the Consideration of Our Latter End," "Of the Knowledge of Christ Crucified," "The Victory of Faith Over the World," "The Great Audit" and "Poems Upon Christmas Day." This book is complete in itself and bibliographically distinct. In 1677 Godbid published a companion volume, also bibliographically distinct, titled Contemplations Moral and Divine. The Second Part. DESCARTES (René)
(64), 511, (9)pp. Tchemerzine p. 309; Guibert p. 203. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SHEPPARD, William
Printed by J[ames] C[otrell] for Robert Pawlet, London 1677 - [8], 364pp, [14]. Title page is a cancel. Recent calf-backed marbled boards, contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Very minor wear to extremities. Pen trials to blank endpapers, slight paper flaw to D2 margin, stain to margin of p.252, occasional creasing and very short marginal tears, lightly spotted, overall a clean and crisp copy. First published in 1655, President of Presidents sets forth the proposals of barrister and legal council to Oliver Cromwell and the Protectorate, William Sheppard (bap. 1595, d. 1674) to revise the judicial system of conveyances towards a more uniform model. Sheppard argues for standardising the laws surrounding land acquisition at a national level, thus eliminating complications arising from the varying uncertainties of local law practices regarding the securing property rights. The popularity of the work proved enduring, running through at least ten editions up to 1870. Wing S3209A. Size: 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]
