Contemporary Manuscript of the fortification-works of Dunkirk, St. Omer, and French Flanders during the period 1677 - 1685.

manuscript: 17th century. 8vo (20,0 x 15,8 cm). 221, (26 blanks), (5), (3 blanks), (1) pp. Contemporary full polished calf, gilt-decorated spine with gilt-lettered red morocco label, marbled endpapers. An important and highly interesting manuscript illustrating the military history of French Flanders in the 2nd half of the 17th century, especially the history and development of the French fortification-system and -works in that region during the years 1677 - 1685, after the French advancement in the Spanish Low Countries. To consolidate the French conquests, a chain of fortifications was built in northern France and southern Flanders. Three persons were responsible for creating this "iron frontier": Vauban, Louvois and Louis XIV. Sebastien Le Pestre, Seigneur de Saint-Léger Vauban [1633 - 1707] was the ingenious designer of all plans. Apart from an account of the siege of Luxembourg and 3 traits on fortifications and military buildings, the manuscript contains 17 copies of notarial writings, meticulously and neatly described, very legible, concerning the contraction of fortification-works, mainly at Dunkirk, St. Omer. These documents describe in a very specific and detailed manner the conditions of the building contracts, the materials to be used, the size and structure of the projects &c, the period of time to complete the works and the financial conditions. Covers with some scratches, joints bit chafed, corners bumped, marbled paper on frontal inner hinge strengthened, otherwise very well-kept. We join a 76-page booklet providing the index and the abbreviated contents of the manuscript, preceded by an illustrated introduction of the historical regional political situation related to the manuscript: Dunkirk, Flanders, Vauban and Louis XIV. An important, very legible, manuscript providing a fascinating insight into the design and execution of the military policy of Louis XIV during a decisive period of his reign.         Contemplations Moral and Divine, By a Person of Great Learning and.

1677 - London, 1677. Devotional Writings of Sir Matthew Hale [Hale, Sir Matthew (1609-1676)]. Contemplations Moral and Divine. By a Person of Great Learning and Judgment. Imprimatur. Ex Aedibus Lambethanis, Martii 13. 1675/6. Antonius Saunders, Reverendissimo Dno, Domino Gilberto Archi-Episc. Cant. A Sacris Domesticis. London: Printed by William Godbid, For William Shrowsbury, 1677. [xvi], 528 pp. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4"). Later period-style calf, blind fillets to boards, raised bands, blind ornaments and lettering piece to spine, edges rouged, marbled endpapers. A few minor scratches and nicks to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, spine ends bumped, hinges cracked. Moderate toning to text, occasional faint dampstaining to upper corners of text block, light foxing to a few leaves, title page has brief early annotation (identifying Hale as author) in miniscule hand. $500. * Second edition. One of the great English jurists of the seventeenth century, Hale was chief baron of the Exchequer from 1660 to 1666, when he became chief justice of the King's Bench. The Contemplations, a collection of spiritual essays and poems, indicate the depth of his religiosity. This is especially evident in such pieces as "Of the Consideration of Our Latter End," "Of the Knowledge of Christ Crucified," "The Victory of Faith Over the World," "The Great Audit" and "Poems Upon Christmas Day." This book is complete in itself and bibliographically distinct. In 1677 Godbid published a companion volume, also bibliographically distinct, titled Contemplations Moral and Divine. The Second Part.         The primitive origination of mankind, considered and examined according to the light of nature. Written by the Honourable Sir Matthew Hale Knight: late chief justice of His Majesties court of King's Bench

London: printed by William Godbid, for William Shrowsbery at the sign of the Bible in Duke-Lane, MDCLXXVII. [1677]. First Edition of Hale's defense of the Mosaic account of the single origin of all peoples. Folio: [10],380pp, with portrait frontispiece (signed: F. H.. Van. Houe: sculp.), three tables, and two small woodcut diagrams in the text. A handsome presentation bound in contemporary mottled calf, spine divided into six richly gilt compartments by raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt, marbled fore-edge, plain period end papers. Nath. Cholmley's engraved armorial bookplate to front paste down (one of the Yorkshire Cholmleys; his name appears in various 18th-century records, including the manuscripts of the Earl of Dartmouth, the History of Whitby, where he is identified as lord of the manor of Whitby (1779), and in A Picture of Whitby and its environs, where he is credited with erecting the "elegant town-hall," in 1788). Bibliophile Hugh Selbourne's (1906-1973) discreet ownership stamp to blank verso of title page. An excellent copy, binding firm, contents clean and crisp, short worm trail to ton inside corner of preliminary leaves (not affecting text), few scattered rust spots, very occasional foxing, else an exceptionally bright, wide-margined copy. Wing H258. Garrison-Morton 215. Norman 965. Lowndes 973. ¶ Hale's "most celebrated religious treatise. . . . The Primitive Origination argues for the creation of the human race by an intelligent agent; its arguments touch on numerous topics, including the impossibility of an infinite succession, the character of time and space, the demographic tendencies of modern England and of ancient Israel, and the unlikelihood of spontaneous generation in anything more complex than a mouse." (ODNB) In the 17th century, when Hale wrote his treatise, it was almost universally accepted that humans had been created by a supernatural being using supernatural means. But alternative explanations did exist, the most prominent positing that the first humans arose through some form of spontaneous generation at multiple times and places. In response, Hale advanced his theory that the earth was not eternal, but rather had a spontaneous "beginning," and went on to defend the Mosaic account of the single origin of all peoples. An important precursor of Malthus, Hale "seems to have been the first to use the expression 'Geometrical Proportion' for the growth of a population from a single family. . . . He believed that in animals, especially insects, various natural calamities reduce the numbers to low levels intermittently, so maintaining a balance of nature."

Tchemerzine p. 309; Guibert p. 203. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Tractatus singularis haemorrhoidibus. Problematum theoreticorum & practicorum centuria absoluta. 2 Tle. in 1 Bd.

Cui praemittitur alius, de partibus continentibus in genere & in specie, de iis abdominis.

Amstelodami : Apud Jacobum Juniorem (i.e. Jansson-Waesberge), 1677, 12, Gestochenes Portrait-Frontispiz, (32), 591, (1) pp., 3 Kupfertafeln, Pergamenteinband der Zeit mit handschriftlichem Rückentitel Titel kleiner Auschnitt hinterlegt. First edition printed in the European continent of Glisson's rare work on the digestive organs and internal tissues! With Coat of Arm ExLibris " Iacob Reinbold Spielmann", J. Striedbeck. del. et sculp: Argent.Francis Glisson (1597-1677) "introduced the idea of irritability as a specific property of all human tissue, a hypothesis which had no effect upon contemporary physiology, but which was later demonstrated experimentally by Haller". Garrison & Morton"Stimulated by ideas of his friend George Ent, Glisson elaborated a theory which he revised in his last medical work, the Tractatus de ventriculo et intestinis (1677). The theory presented itself as follows: The nerves carry a nutritive juice (succus nutrivus) secreted by the brain between cortex and medulla from particles of the arterial blood. The psychic spirits are the "fixed spirits" of this juice, which serves nutrition rather than the function of body fibers. As a chemical substance, the psychic spirits cannot flow fast enough to assure simultaneity of events in the brain and the peripheral parts. Nerve action is transmitted by a vibration of the nerves (caused by localized contraction of the brain), and the muscle fibers then contract because of irritability, a property which they share with all fibers of the body". Owsei Temkin, p.426"The doctrine of irritability does not exhaust the content of the Tractatus de Ventriculo et Intestinis, which, apart from the treatise indicated by the title, also contains a treatise on skin, hair, nails, fat, abdominal muscles, peritoneum, and omentum. Together the Anatomia hepatis and the Tractatus de Ventriculo et Intestinis constitute a monumental work on general anatomy and on anatomy and physiology of the digestive organs. Moreover, in the latter treatise [offered here], Glisson goes far beyond the stomach and intestinal tract. Apart from discussing the theory of digestion , Glisson manages to include theories of embryogenesis (in which the relationship to Harvey is particularly interesting)". The History of the World, In Five Books Whererunto is Added to this Edition, the Life and Tryal of the Author

London: Printed for Robert White, T. Basset, J. Wright, R. Chiswell, G. Dawes and T. Sawbridge, 1677. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. pp. [4] (preliminary verse titled "The Mind of the Front", title page in red and black),1-44, 51-54 (Life of Sir Walter Raleigh), [44] (Preface and Contents), 885 (with various errors in pagination, text continuous), [46] (chronological table and alphabetical table of contents); with inserted portrait of Raleigh and extra engraved title page (dated 1676), 8 double-page maps and plans. Contemporary full leather binding, re-backed with original spine laid down, later (but not recent) spine labels. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown, which also has faint evidence of an old erasure (notes on the book's pagination) and the name "Bernard Tannier" (possibly the distinguished Spenser scholar) in pencil; text very clean. Raleigh's last great work, which was first published in 1614 and went through ten editions by 1687. This is the first edition to include "Life and Tryal of the Author," which has been attributed to John Shirley (Brushfield 223J). Written while Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London during the reign of James I, the work took aim at the absolutism of the Stuarts via its assessments of ancient institutions, as it "traced the rise and fall of the three great empires of Babylon, Assyria and Macedon, and dealt exhaustively with the most flourishing periods of Jewish, Greek and Roman history" (DNB). The entry on the History in Printing in the Mind of Man (117) speculates that the work's tremendous popularity was due to the fact that it was "not a work of history in the academic sense, but a political tract of immediate applicability" and notes that Raleigh's word was respected not due to his scholarship (though it was admirable), but "because he embodied all the glories of the reign of Elizabeth I, which at the time of publication had already begun to be transfigured into a golden age." [12],358,[12]pp, with magnificent folding map of Oxfordshire (often wanting) with a border formed of 176 images of arms of colleges, towns, landowners and gentry; large engraved title-page vignette, and 16 numbered full-page plates by Michael Burghers, each with dedication within ornate cartouche to the owner of the land where objects illustrated were found. Contemporary Cambridge-style calf boards paneled in blind, respined to style with red morocco title and author labels, date in gilt to foot, end papers renewed. Copper-engraved armorial book plate of "Orwell Park" reaffixed to front paste down. An excellent copy, with only light scattered foxing, plates bright and strong, binding firm. Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), P2585. Madan 3130. Lowndes ("an admirable work\") 1886. ESTC Citation No. R473650. Four issues of the first edition are known, with no priority established (In our issue the author's name is given in full and at foot of title page appears: "The price in sheets at the press, nine shillings. To subscribers, eight shillings."). It was posthumously reprinted in a revised and enlarged second edition in 1705 with a life of Plot by his stepson John Burman. Plot, English naturalist, first Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford, and first keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, is best known for this treatise "singular medley of natural philosophy, palaelogy, and the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms from man downward," (Madan) followed by the Natural History of Staffordshire, published in 1686. The first work was filled with descriptions and illustrations of a wide range of specimens, and had immediate and far reaching influence. Plates are of flora and fauna, rocks and minerals, and some seventy species of fossils from the Jurassic and Cretaceous, including the first known illustration of a dinosaur bone (actually, the knee-end of the thigh bone, which Plot mistakenly thought had come from an elephant taken to Britain in Roman times). Throughout, in his choices of specimens and antiquities to present, Plot seems always to stress the anomalous. Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), whose copy this was (or perhaps that of one of his immediate descendants) built the house and lived at Orwell Park, at Nacton in Suffolk, between 1725 and 1757. Vernon was famous for sea campaigns against the French and Spanish, with George Washington's half-brother, Lawrence Washington, serving aboard Vernon's flagship as Captain of the Marines in 1741. Washington later named the town of Mount Vernon in Virginia after the Admiral. Following Vernon's death, on 30 October 1757, his cousin, Francis Vernon (1715-1783), rebuilt the house, adding an extensive deer park. He also bought the title of Viscount Orwell, as a result of which the lands became known as Orwell Deer Park, and later simply Orwell Park.

Daniel Elzevir,, Amsterdam 1677 - In 8? (196x143); carte numerate 37, pagg. 239. Garrison-Morton : " This book was the first attempt to over the whole field of animal physiology ." Medicina.

Amsterdam, Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1677. 4to. With etched frontispiece and 6 etched folding plates by Romeyn de Hooghe. 19th-century boards.

Adelung II, pp. 359-360; Landwehr, De Hooghe Book Illustrator 46; Muller, Bibl. Neerlando-Russe 200; Tiele, Bibl. 602; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1677.04. First edition of a valuable account detailing a Dutch embassy to Russia (1675-1676). The objective was to gain Russian participation in the anti-Swedish and anti-French alliance, and Koenraad Klenk, with his expert knowledge of Russian language and culture, was the ideal choice to lead the embassy. The mission was subsidized with more than 50,000 guilders, an extraordinary amount which was even exceeded during the journey. Although the embassy was well received and the Russians were showered with gifts, Klenk failed to persuade the Tsar to enter into war with Sweden. The six impressively evocative plates by Romeyn de Hooghe are typical examples of his rich allegorical imagery. Final leaves restored, with the missing text supplied in manuscrip, some soling, binding worn. An excellent source for the history of Russia and its foreign relations during the reign of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich.
