Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon
[Oxford] : Printed at the Theater, 1676. First edition, 1675. 1676 1st ed Clarendon Survey of LEVIATHAN Thomas Hobbes Political Philosophy Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon published an important and fascinating rebuke of Thomas Hobbes’s famous work ‘Leviathan’. Clarendon formed this book as a critique, but the work in unquestionable an attack on Hobbes’s book. According to Zagorin, “‘Survey’ is a book of considerable merit and interest and is the longest, most general statement of political philosophy that Clarendon left.” It was in this work that Clarendon decisively formulated that ‘Leviathan’ favored the domination of the usurping government that overthrew the king, and furthermore, that Hobbes had written this work in order to make his return to England from exile. (Zagorin). Over half of ‘Survey’ deals with politics and religion discussions found in ‘Leviathan’. Clarendon focuses on Hobbesian views of sedition, treason, and impiety, even though Clarendon shared some of the views that Hobbes held. Though it should be noted that Clarendon claimed Hobbes to be “so ignorant of the law and constitution of England that he was incompetent to judge political affairs.” This rare first edition was published in July 1676, as stated on the verso of the title page, dedicated to King Charles II. Item number: #5032 Price: $950 CLARENDON, Edward Hyde A brief view and survey of the dangerous and pernicious errors to church and state in Mr. Hobbes's book entitled Leviathan [Oxford] : Printed at the Theater, 1676. Plato
London: 1675. First edition in English of The Apology - the account of the speech Socrates makes at the trial in which he is charged with not recognizing the gods recognized by the state, inventing new deities, and corrupting the youth of Athens. A cornerstone of Western philosophy and a reminder to examine one's life truthfully without succumbing to pressure and fear. [40], 300, [6, blank] - likely the initial blank leaf bound at the rear along with the other two that are called for. Bound in early 20th century blue morocco with red speckled edges. Engraved frontispiece of Socrates accepting hemlock - small piece of upper corner torn away. Paper flaw touching 2 letters of G4, textblock edges a bit dusty. Several early notations throughout, otherwise quite internally clean. A Very Good copy of a rare and foundational work. Also here for the first time in English is Phaedo - describing the moments in the prison cell leading up to Socrates' death from poisoning by use of hemlock. "Phaedo is unique in that it presents Plato's own metaphysical, psychological, and epistemological views; thus it belongs to Plato's middle period rather than with his earlier works detailing Socrates' conversations regarding ethics. Known to ancient commentators by the title On the Soul, the dialogue presents no less than four arguments for the soul's immortality. It also contains discussions of Plato's doctrine of knowledge as recollection, his account of the soul's relationship to the body, and his views about causality and scientific explanation. Most importantly of all, Plato sets forth his most … [Click Below for Full Description]

OGILBY, John.
London, c.1675, second state. Coloured. 330 x 445mm. The first sheet of three showing the route from London to Aberystwyth, beginning in the centre of the City, passing through Uxbridge, Beaconsfield and High Wickham, ending at Islip, but with a spur to Oxford. Plate 1 from Ogilby's 'Britannia', the first national road-atlas of any country in Western Europe. It was composed of maps of seventy-three major roads and cross-roads, presented as trompe-l'œil scrolls, each with a decorative title cartouche, this being one of only four featuring the way-wiser. It was the first English atlas on a uniform scale, at one inch to a mile, and the 'mile' Ogilby used became the national standard, the statute mile of 1,760 yards. Ogilby claimed that 26,600 miles of roads were surveyed in the course of preparing the atlas, on foot using the surveyor's wheel depicted in the cartouche, but only about 7,500 were actually depicted in print. It was only after the 'Britannia' that roads started being shown on county maps. Second state, with plate number bottom right.

DRAWINGS - ARCHITECTURAL].
, . . The original designs for the alterations to the chapter library at Verona, situated in the Church of St. Helena, abutting the famous Cathedral of San Zeno (the common wall appears in the drawings). The alteration was ordered by Scipione Maffei (1675-1755) and Jacopo(?) Muselli and executed by the architect Lodovico Perini; it was finished in 1726. In 1713 Maffei, a leading scholar, poet and man of letters, had made a remarkable discovery in the library: in its old cupboards he found late-classical and early Christian manuscripts from the 5th to 9th century, stored there centuries earlier, apparently to protect them against danger of flooding of the river Adige. On the basis of these old manuscripts and helped by the Canon Carlo Carinelli, Maffei formulated a completely new and epoch-making theory regarding the development of the Latin script in three variants: the Roman majuscule, the minuscule and the cursive hand, showing an uninterrupted evolution from Roman Antiquity to the Renaissance. Maffei published the results of his studies in his Istoria diplomatica (1727) and Verona illustrata (1742). The rediscovery of these old manuscripts also resulted in a revival of Patristic studies and many new editions of the works of the Church Fathers. With some faint stains near the fore-edges (an one edge of the loosely inserted drawing) and a couple rust spots in the paper, but still in very good condition.

SPEED, John.
London: Thomas Bassett & Richard Chiswell, 1675. Blank verso. Contemporary outline colour. 385 x 505mm. Two old repaired tears; a very fine dark impression. An important map of the two provinces published a little over a decade after the English took New York City from the Dutch in 1664. It shows the Eastern Seaboard from Penobscot south to Delaware Bay, with the cartography taken from the Jansson/Visscher 'Belgii Novi' map, although it omits most of Chesapeake Bay as that area was detailed on another new map. Although the map is usually attributed to Speed, it was engraved by Francis Lamb for the 1676 edition of his 'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World' (the first English world atlas, first published 1627), by which time Speed had been dead for nearly half a century. It was usually issued in the atlas with text printed on the reverse, however it is known that pre-atlas examples were sold from 1675 without text, as this example. BURDEN: 455, 'one of the first maps to depict the English pre-eminence in the region.

Amsterdam, ND: When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. Vellum. 12mo. Amstelædami : Abrahami & Adriani a´ Gaesbeeck, 1675. 348 pages. Illustrated. Text in Latin. Bound in full vellum boards with gilt titles present. Boards have rubbing present to the extremities. Previous owner's notes present to the reverse of the FFEP. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Sextus Julius Frontinus (c. 40 - 103 AD) was one of the most distinguished Roman senators of the late 1st century AD. He is best known to the post-Classical world as an author of technical treatises, especially De aquaeductu, dealing with the aqueducts of Rome. Frontinus also wrote a theoretical treatise on military science, which is lost. His extant work on military matters, the Stratagems (Latin: Strategemata), is a collection of examples of military stratagems from Greek and Roman history, for the use of generals. He draws on his own experience as a general in Germania under Domitian, but similarities between the anecdotes he records and versions of other Roman authors like Valerius Maximus and Livy suggest that he drew mainly on literary sources. ROGGEVEEN, Arent
[Amsterdam,: Pieter Goos, 1675]. [Amsterdam,: Pieter Goos,, 1675].. Steckende vande Züydt Revier tot de Noordt Revier en't Lange Eÿland. Double-page engraved map. First state, of the first edition. A beautiful and detailed chart of the Manhattan, New Jersey and Long Island area, extending to Rhode Island and Martha's Vineyard. The Hamptons is labelled 'Hanton'. Manhattan (spelled 'Manhattans') sausage-shaped and shows the fort of New Amsterdam. Staten Island is mis-shapen and Harlem river is rather wide. "The chart derives from the very rare Pieter Goos chart of the same region published in 1666. The first notable difference is a reorientation so that the top of the map is now directly west instead of slightly west of north. The nomenclature is identical with the exception of the insertion of 'Colacke hoeck' on the east bank of the 'Zuyd Revier' (Delaware River). The depiction is extended further eastwards enabling more detail of Long Island Sound" (Burden). Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartograp … [Click Below for Full Description]
