GODARD, Pierre.
Goldsmith, BMC STC French G-482; Houzeau-Lancaster 5299; Thorndike VIII, p. 334; Wellcome III, p. 128; KVK/WorldCat (3 copies); not in Krivatsky; De La Lande. First edition of a rare and remarkable "introduction to astrological judgments" carefully attempting to skirt along the edges of papal decrees that could be interpreted as prohibiting astrological predictions. It includes "ephemerides" giving tables of the positions and aspects of the sun, moon and planets for every year from 1675 (aspects 1678) to 1700. It then provides extensive predictions based on this data, intended as aids to medicine, agriculture, navigation and the making of horoscopes. The title-page cautiously notes that it provides these "sans neanmoins déroger au liberal arbitre, ny aux decrets de léglise Catholique". This wording is clearly a defence against any claim that might be made that such predictions went against the papal bulls of 1586 and 1631 concerning free will. There is also a brief treatise on talismans and a discussion of "sympathetic powder" and ink, supposedly written by Jean-Albert Belin (1610-1677). A second edition appeared at Rouen in 1689.With manuscript diagrams for the year 1651 on an endleaf and owners' inscriptions on the title-page. A small tear in fol. g2 occurred before printing, for parts of two words are printed on the folded-over flap. In very good condition, with the volvelle dial with its rotating disk and arm perfectly preserved.

LASTMANS, Cornelius Jansz
Amsterdam: By Hendrik Donkker, in Compagnie Met Jacob En Casparus Loots-man, 1675. Two parts in one volume. [4], 236, [2], 46pp, [16]. Woodcut diagrams to text. Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt, with contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Marbled edges. Slightly rubbed, with small splits to upper joint at head and foot of spine and a little loss to lettering-piece. Small stain to lower-edge of text block. Paper flaw to Cc1 affecting a single word to recto, Dd1r (table) slightly shaved at foot. Cornelis Jansz. Lastman (fl.1620-40s), mathematician and Dutch sailor, Captain of the ship Pascaert in 1626. Appointed as an official examiner of nautical pilots by Amsterdam in 1619 and sometime nautical schoolmaster with rooms in the Golden Quadrant of the same city, Lastman appears infrequently in the history of Dutch navigation, but almost exclusively as an avowed expert. This detailed, fundamental and definitive work on the science of navigation, with an extensive nautical almanack added as an appendix, appeared in several editions between 1642 and 1715. Judging by the scarcity of each in both insitutions and commerce, few have survived, making the condition of this copy all the more remarkable. OCLC locates only two copies of this edition, at Leiden and Rostock. . Quarto.

SHELTON, Thomas (translates).
R. Scot, T. Basset, J. Wright, R. Chiswell/Richard Hogkinson, London. 1675, 1672. Third edition. The first part was originally published in 1612 and the second in 1620; reprinted in 1652. Folio. pp [viii], 137, [v], 273. Full leather with what appears to be a nineteenth-century rebacking of eighteenth-century boards, raised bands lettered in gilt. Endpapers renewed. Thomas Shelton's translation is not only the first in English but also the first into any language. The first part, translated from the Brussels edition of 1607, appeared when Cervantes was still alive. There has been some speculation that Shelton may have known Cervantes but this is impossible to prove. Shelton's translation was until Motteux's translation of 1700 the most popular and still has its admirers, among them Samuel Putnam who produced one of the best translations of recent times. Two early ownership signatures on the title-page one of which has been rubbed away with some light damage to the paper. With the finely engraved bookplate on the front pastedown of Allan Heywood Bright (1862-1941) who was a Liberal politician, author of several books on Middle English literature and a great bibliophile. Tipped onto the front free endpaper is a short essay, presumably in his hand, "Don Quixote revived in the person of Ignatius Loyola".Covers rubbed. Some spotting to prelims and last pages. Very good. LE GRAND, Antoine
Second edition of Le Grand's exposition in Latin of Descartes's view of animals, first published in London in 1675. Later it was translated into English by Richard Blome and published as the third part of An Entire Body of Philosophy (1694). Le Grand was born at Douai and probably died in London. He was educated at the College in his native city of Douai, where many English Catholics would have been among his fellow students. He became a Franciscan friar, teaching philosophy and divinity before he was sent on the English Mission. He lived for many years in Oxfordshire and became known as the most prominent English Cartesian of his age. He was the first writer to present the doctrines of Descartes in scholastic format, in his Philosophia veterum e mente Renati Descartes, more scholastic breviter digesta (1671). This was expanded into the Institutio philosopiae, secundum principia Renati Descartes (1672) and was followed by the Historia naturae (1673), which sets out a variety of observations of natural phenomena, and then accounts for them in terms of Cartesian principles. 'And finally, in his third book, A Dissertation of the Want of Sense and Knowledge in Brute Animals, Le Grand argued against the supposed link of life and sense from Plato onwards, and after offering a brief survey of various hypotheses on the nature of soul by Aristotle, Gassendi, Fabri, and Descartes, he adopted Descartes's view. In the Preface, Le Grand writes that "this whole work contains nothing else, but his [Descartes's] opinions, or what may clearly and distinctly be deduced from them"' (Stanford … [Click Below for Full Description]

CANTERBURY - HOLLAR, WENCESLAUS.
[London]: John Ogilby. [c.1675]. Original etching. Image size 22 x 7.5 inches. Good impression with narrow margins, uncoloured as issued. Dedication in cartouche on right hand side and coat of arms on left hand side cartouche with title in scroll in centre. Mounted in recent acid-free card. Image shows traces of old folds but is otherwise in very good condition. This etching was originally published in the 1650s and reprinted several times by a variety of publishers. This is an Ogilby edition, and although it is impossible to date the impressions in an accurate sequence, this version would be from the second half of the seventeenth century, c.1675. Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) was born in Prague and spent the years 1637-1644 and most of the period from 1652 onwards in England. His output of work was prolific: 'It is largely from Hollar's many etchings and drawings that we know what England looked like in the middle of the seventeenth century.' John Ogilby (1600-76) was a publisher and geographer, who was appointed cosmographer to Charles II in 1671. His collaboration with Hollar began in 1652, when the engraver produced the plates for Ogilby's translation of Virgil and continued until 1675, when he engraved the title page for Britannia, Ogilby's strip map road book of Britain. A fine view of the entire city of Canterbury in its rural setting, surrounded by fields and woods. PRINTS/MAPS CANTERBURY PRINTS/MAPS
