[Book Arts. German Baroque Binding]. Dondini, Guglielmo 1606-1678
s.l. [Nuremberg?]: Sartorius, n.d. [1675]. Small 4to (21 cm x 17 cm) bound in full alum-tawed deerskin, now faded to a pleasant cream color, profusely gilt to an all-over Baroque motif, a.e.g. (worn along corners and extremities, spine significantly so, but the covers are attractive and the binding perfectly strong; endpapers removed; front pastedown with evidence of abrasion / removal). Pagination: (3) +537 pages + Index (repair to one leaf; some minor foxing as is true in all copies). Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece + 5 folding engraved plates (separation along fold on one plate). A sound and complete copy with faults, priced correctly. A rare German Baroque binding made of alum-tawed leather, probably deerskin, richly gilt. This is Dondini's account of the French military victories of Alexander Farnese (1545-1592), Duke of Parma and Piacenza, superbly illustrated with a fine engraved frontispiece of Farnese and 5 folding plates of battle scenes of high quality. Farnese was the celebrated general of Philip II of Spain, whose brilliant strategies allowed him to reconquer the southern Netherlands. In 1590 he triumphed over the Huguenots to the extent that they were forced to relinquish their sieges of Paris and Corbeil; two years later he repeated his triumphs at Rouen. The plates were engraved by Jacob Christoph Sartorius (1674-1737) after designs by Johann Azelt (b. 1654) and and Sigmund Gabriel Hipschmann (b. 1639). They document battle scenes at Paris and Corbeil, and also of the Spanish armies crossing the Seine near Dieppe. Guglielmo Dondini (1606-1678) wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

PIJPEN, Hendrik vander.
Author not in Hirsch; Schelenz; Stoeder; Vandewiele; Wittop Koning. Dutch manuscript pharmacopoeia in Latin and Dutch from ca. 1675 by Hendrik vander Pijpen, with about 900 medicinal recipes. Vander Pijpen appears to be a Dordrecht name, with several Hendriks in the family, including a lumber or timber merchant (1635-1676). The author must have been a practicing pharmacologist and physician, for he occasionally refers to recipes of his own and also relates his experiences of the effects of certain medicines on his patients. At least twice he refers to Dutch colleagues, making the manuscript a primary source for unknown or little-known figures in the trade: Ary Jansen vande Vaerde, appointed poxmaster of the city Delft in 1660 and the pharmacologist Mr. Wilm van Liewaerde. The book opens with dictionaries of pharmaceutical symbols and abbreviations, symbols and abbreviations of measurements and pharmacological terms (especially the Dutch meaning of Latin terms). The pharmacopoeia gives the ingredients and recipes primarily in Latin, while most of the detailed explanations of the effects and the administering of medication are in Dutch. The first part is alphabetical by the name of the medicine, followed with composite medicines.Very well preserved manuscript, with only a few occasional spots and in very good condition. The binding has a couple tiny smudges and one of the clasps is detached, otherwise also very good. An extensive Dutch manuscript pharmacopoeia with about 900 recipes, probably compiled in Dordrecht ca. 1675.

SWAMMERDAM, Jan.
Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1675. First edition. First edition, very rare and a fine copy, of Swammerdam's treatise on the life-cycle and anatomy of the mayfly, containing his first published descriptions and illustrations of the internal anatomy of an insect. "His Ephemeri Vita contains some very remarkable pieces of minute anatomy. The figures, drawn by himself, are the best early representations of the dissection of an insect" (Hagströmer Library, description of 1681 English translation). "In his last work, on the may-fly, Swammerdam gave the first complete account of metamorphosis ... much in his descriptions was not superseded before the nineteenth century ... on a visit to Paris he repeated before a meeting at Thévenot's house his dissection of the may-fly, and an offer was made to tempt him to Florence" (Hall, From Galileo to Newton, pp. 168-9). In 1669 Swammerdam had published his Historia insectorum generalis, which contained many beautiful illustrations of insects, but did not attempt to describe their minute anatomy. "A comparison of his investigations contained in Historia Insectorum Generalis (1669) and those that appeared in his next major published work, on the mayfly (Ephemeri Vita, 1675), shows that a series of fundamental changes had taken place in Swammerdam's science. Most importantly, he began to study the internal structures of insects using microscopy, dissection, and careful experimentation. Also, like Malpighi, he presented his vision to the world via some stunning drawings, in which the component anatomical parts are treated as separate, isolated, … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

"Arguing that the existence of God, knowledge of his attributes, and the requirement of a suitable demeanour towards him could all be established by the use of reason, the book also included a discussion of religious epistemology. CERTANI Giacomo
