HUYGENS, Christiaan
Paris: Jean Cusson, 1675. FIRST PUBLICATION OF THE INVENTION OF THE BALANCE SPRING WATCH, including the famous and much-reproduced engraving of the device. "The second great seventeenth-century advance in timekeeping [after that of the pendulum clock] was the invention of the balance sping. When attached at one end to the balance staff of a spring-driven watch and attached at the other end to the back plate of the watch and set in motion, the oscillation of a spiral hair spring, like the swing of a pendulum, was found to be isochronous. Its employment increased the accuracy of a watch by an order of magnitude comparable to that achieved by the application of a pendulum to a clock. Both applications were the invention of the Dutch mathematician, physicist and astronomer Christiaan Huygens (1629-95). Huygens' early letters written in 1675 to Henry Oldenberg (1618-77), the first secretary of the Royal Society, contain his first disclosure of the secret of the balance spring. The letters were quickly followed by a published description and diagram of the mechanism in the February 25, 1675, issue of the Academie Royale's Le journal des scavans" (Vincent et al, European Clocks and Watches in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2015), p. 98). Oldenberg read the letter from Huygens to the Society describing his invention of a spring-regulated watch on 18 February 1675 (printed in the Philosophical Transactions on 25 March). Oldenburg strongly supported the concept of Huygens receiving an English patent for his new clock. Robert Hooke (1635-1703) immediately protested that priority for … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Miguel de Luna)
Gabriel de Leon / Melchor Sanchez. Published 1675-1676, the 7th edition, large 8vo, 19th century half green morocco, marbled boards, the first part undated but the Fee Del Corrector and Summa de la Tassa are dated late October 1676; the second part, printed by Sanchez, is dated 1675; paginated continuously. (10) 226 (2) 229-438 (10) pp. Originally published 1592-1600, this work, first thought to be authentic and accurate as a history of the Arab conquest of Spain up to AD 721, was later found to be a spurious work of the late 16th century by Miguel de Luna with not much historical accuracy. Very good, some rubbing to joints and light shelfwear, text is a bit tanned and almost entirely free of foxing but for the outermost leaves. OCLC locates 12 copies worldwide, zero in recent auction records. Very Good.

WALLIS, John (1616-1703)
London, John Martyn for the Royal Society, 1675. 4to (200 x 155 mm), pp [iv] 36, with folding engraved plate; a very good copy in plain wrappers, worn.First edition of Wallis's response to Sir Mathew Hale's critique of Boyle's experiments on the weight and spring of air, and part of Wallis's project to provide the mathematical basis of mechanics. 'In 1673 and 1674 Sir Matthew Hale (1609-1676), the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, anonymously published two books criticising the explanation of the barometric experiments by the weight and spring of the air. For some reason, Boyle was not willing to answer and John Wallis was commissioned to do so. Wallis dealt with the weight of fluids in the . Discourse concerning Gravity . presented to the Royal Society in November 1674 The Council ordered it to be printed at its expense in January 1675. We cannot deal here with Wallis' tract except to point out that although Wallis avoids the mixed mathematics format, he provides a detailed theoretical critique of Hale's explanations of the barometric experiments and of new experiments adduced by Hale. What seems highly relevant here is that in a matter in which Boyle was the highest authority, the Society's answer to Hale's challenge was entrusted to Wallis. This suggests that the experimentalist's and the mathematician's approach to hydrostatics and pneumatics were regarded as conflicting in no fundamental way. On the contrary it suggests that it was thought useful to combine them for answering critics. Boyle and Wallis did agree in rejecting to pay serious consideration to the in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lancret, Nicolas
Prijs: Euro525,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).

Fra Noè" [or Noe Bianco].
Bassano del Grappa: Giovanni Antonio Remondini, ca. 1675. Good/Off-island printers in the Venetian Republic were restricted to doing municipal jobs (edicts, bulletins, legal matter), to publishing texts for scholastic and religious use, and to reissuing popular literature such as chivalric romances. These were always printed on cheap paper. For this Voyage from Venice to the Holy Sepulcher and Mount Sinai, Remondini substituted 15th-century travel literature (first published at Bologna in 1500) for the chivalric romance, and enriched the text with scores of fascinating woodblock illustrations (easy to read and easy on the eyes for broad public appeal). The book was a great success, frequently reprinted. Editions published before 1670 bear the publisher's name in its original Venetian form, Remondin. The copy offered here bears the Italianized name Remondini, dating it after 1670, but before 1686 (when dated editions began to appear).(A penciled note on the title dates the edition to 1675.) The decorated paper on the boards could be contemporary, but in that case it would have been acquired from Venice or elsewhere. Remondini did not manufacture decorated woodblock paper until the early 1700s.In all, a strikingly illustrated travelogue of the journey from Venice to Jerusalem, and beyond.. Octavo (15 cm); 192 pages. Title page printed in red and black, with image of three crosses (two black flanking one red that incorporates the Franciscan motto, "Humanity, Patience, Obedience, Poverty"). 156 woodcut illustrations in text, including 5 double-page views. STILLINGFLEET, Edward
Paris: Pierre Rocolet; Damien Foucault, 1675. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "I myself have read the writings and teachings of the heretics, polluting my soul for a while with their abominable notions, though deriving this benefit: I was able to refute them for myself and loathe them even more." ― Eusebius, The Church History Many historical accounts of the church have been written since the church began. None, though, seem to be as important or have had as long lasting of an impact as that of Eusebius. Eusebius's 'Church History' is considered the pioneering work on the history of the Church. He details the life of Jesus through Emperor Constantine's military victories (ca. 325 AD). Another notable church history was written by 5th-century historian Socrates Scholasticus. Socrates's 'Historia' covers the period of the church immediately following that of Eusebius, describing the events that would eventually lead to the Council of Chalcedon. These church histories were edited and translated into French by Louis Cousin and published as part of a grand 'History of the Church' consisting of these two accounts as well as others. A rare 1675 first edition published in Paris.
