OGILBY, John.
[London: printed by the author at his house in White-Fryers, 1675] - Original copper engraving (43.5 x 33.5 cm), hand-coloured. Light offsetting, but a very good copy with wide margins. Large decorated title cartouche at top centre with royal arms below. This handsome road map is from John Ogilvy's Britannia, the first complete survey of the roads of England and Wales. "In Britannia Ogilby drew out 2519 miles of road in the form of 100 strip maps, a technique that was widely imitated throughout the following century. Measuring distances by waywiser (his 'great wheel'), he made allowance for roads that ascended hills yet had to be depicted in two dimensions on paper, and his surveys helped to standardize the mile at 1760 yards throughout the kingdom. Britannia marked the first major advance in cartography in England since the Tudor period, though it did echo earlier traditions. It was republished in 1698, 1719, and 1720, and on subsequent occasions up to modern times" (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition]

- No place, 1675. 4to. (36) pp. Fine half calf from late 19th-century, gilt spine with raised bands and red label. From the library of Gustaf Holdo Stråle, with his book plate, and from Ericsberg. This version not in VD17, but compare VD17 23:277057A. Klemming, Sveriges förhållanden, s. 251. Warmholtz 4944.
Early print of this Delisle maps. The large white edges were mounted on both maps separate in contemporarily time (probably because of the large sheet size). Very good condition.

Velleius Paterculus; Antoine Thysius
1675 History of ROME Velleius Paterculus Trojan WAR Julius Augustus Caesar Latin FAMOUS DELPHIN EDITION! Marcus Velleius Paterculus (c. 19 BC – c. AD 31), also known as Velleius was a Roman historian. His History, written in a highly rhetorical style, covered the period from the end of the Trojan War to the death of Livia in 29 AD, but is most useful for the period from the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. to the death of Augustus in 14 AD. Although Velleius's praenomen is given as Marcus by Priscian, some modern scholars identify him with Gaius Velleius Paterculus, whose name occurs in an inscription on a north African milestone. OGILBY, John.
London, c.1675, second state. Coloured. 330 x 445mm. From Bristol to Ludlow, via Chepstow, Monmouth & Hereford. Plate 56 of Ogilby's 'Britannia', the first national road-atlas of any country in Western Europe. It was composed of maps of seventy-three major roads and cross-roads, presented as trompe-l'œil scrolls, each with a decorative title cartouche. It was the first English atlas on a uniform scale, at one inch to a mile, and the 'mile' Ogilby used became the national standard, the statute mile of 1,760 yards. Ogilby claimed that 26,600 miles of roads were surveyed in the course of preparing the atlas, on foot using the surveyor's wheel depicted in the cartouche, but only about 7,500 were actually depicted in print. It was only after the 'Britannia' that roads started being shown on county maps. Second state, with plate number bottom right.

[BACON] FRANCIS, Right Hon.; GODWYN [GODWIN] , Right Rev.
London: Printed by W.G. for R. Scott, T. Basset, etc., 1675, 1676. First Edition thus. Quarto; pp. [xii], 138; [xii], 201; second part with separate titles and pagination. Bound in recent full speckled calf with gilt and black title label to spine, panelling to boards. Bound without the portraits. Some foxing and damp staining to the fore of the book with a few page edges fraying. Very good indeed. First edition to combine Bacon's history of the reign of Henry VII ('This admirable historical work...' Lowndes) with Francis Godwin's history of the subsequent three reigns. Bacon's work first appeared in 1622; Godwin's was first published in Latin in 1616 and in English (in a translation by his son Morgan) in 1630. The opening pages of Bacon's history - although no doubt based on Thomas More - effectively established the myth of the wicked and murderous Richard III being succeeded by the steady, virtuous Henry VII. Lowndes, p.95 and 905.

Cosin, John.
Typis T. Roycroft. Apud Hen. Brome. London, 1675. pp. (16), 165, [10] + Frontispiece portrait of Cosin, engraved by William Dolle; + Plus some early manuscript notes about this work and its author. Small 8vo. 180 mm. All edges gilt. Contemporary and entirely original full red leather gilt binding. Elaborately tooled variant cottage roof English Restoration binding. Front board detached. Spine with a piece out but preserved. John Cosin, Bishop of Durham (1594-1672) was Chaplain to Charles I and a liturgical purist. He was responsible for much of the revision of the Anglican liturgy during the Restoration. During the Interregnum, he was falsely accused of being a Romanist and exiled to France. "Cosin was a most uncompromising enemy to popery. In France he wrote his 'Historia Transubstantialis Papalis' at the request of Gilbert Talbot, who had undertaken to argue the matter out with a German prince (the Duke of Newbourg), in the presence of Charles II at Cologne, and apparently did not feel quite equal to the task. Cosin readily consented, and showed in his treatise that the Church of England held the doctrine of a real presence without in any way countenancing the doctrine of transubstantiation. It was not published until nineteen years after it was written and three years after the death of the author. It was given to the world, with an interesting preface by John Durel (1625-1683), in the original Latin." [this mostly from the DNB]. ESTC R2240; WING C6358. Authentic gilt tooled English Restoration bindings are rarely available today at an affordable price. **PRICE JUST REDU … [Click Below for Full Description]
