OGILBY, John.
London, c.1675. Coloured. 330 x 445mm. The road to Aberystwyth from Carmarthen, via Cardigan and Lampeter. Plate 91 from Ogilby's 'Britannia', the first national road-atlas of any country in Western Europe. It was composed of maps of seventy-three major roads and cross-roads, presented as trompe-l'œil scrolls, each with a decorative title cartouche, in this case Neptune and Venus in sea-shell chariots. It was the first English atlas on a uniform scale, at one inch to a mile, and the 'mile' Ogilby used became the national standard, the statute mile of 1,760 yards. Ogilby claimed that 26,600 miles of roads were surveyed in the course of preparing the atlas, on foot using the surveyor's wheel depicted in the cartouche, but only about 7,500 were actually depicted in print. It was only after the 'Britannia' that roads started being shown on county maps. Second state, with plate number bottom right.

Giovanni Battista FALDA (Valduggia, Novara, 1643; Rome, 1678)
"Etching, in perfect condition. Example in the first state, from "" Il nuovo teatro delle fabriche, et edificii, in prospettiva di Roma moderna, sotto il felice pontificato di N. S. papa Alessandro VII..."". One of the most important architectural projects of the seventeenth century was the urban renovation of Rome. Under the brilliant leadership of Pope Alessandro VII (1655-1667), Rome dramatically emerged as one of the most modern and beautiful cities of the new Baroque age. No place, 1675. 4to. (36) pp. Fine half calf from late 19th-century, gilt spine with raised bands and red label. From the library of Gustaf Holdo Stråle, with his book plate, and from Ericsberg. This version not in VD17, but compare VD17 23:277057A. Klemming, Sveriges förhållanden, s. 251. Warmholtz 4944.

[BACON] FRANCIS, Right Hon.; GODWYN [GODWIN] , Right Rev.
London: Printed by W.G. for R. Scott, T. Basset, etc., 1675, 1676.. First Edition thus. Quarto; pp. [xii], 138; [xii], 201; second part with separate titles and pagination. Bound in recent full speckled calf with gilt and black title label to spine, panelling to boards. Bound without the portraits. Some foxing and damp staining to the fore of the book with a few page edges fraying. Very good indeed. First edition to combine Bacon's history of the reign of Henry VII ('This admirable historical work...' Lowndes) with Francis Godwin's history of the subsequent three reigns. Bacon's work first appeared in 1622; Godwin's was first published in Latin in 1616 and in English (in a translation by his son Morgan) in 1630. The opening pages of Bacon's history - although no doubt based on Thomas More - effectively established the myth of the wicked and murderous Richard III being succeeded by the steady, virtuous Henry VII.
