Born at Athens of a noble family, Plato aspired to political activity. Dismayed at the inequities of the Athenian tyranny, and later at the execution of his teacher Socrates under the democracy, he turned towards philosophy in search of an alternative to the unstable and unjust public life of the time. He also sought unity behind the changing impressions of the visible universe. All Plato's writing, except for The Apology and the Letters, is in dialogue form. The Apology records Socrates' defense at his trial. These dialogues are philosophically inconclusive, but are considered best to represent the historical Socrates." (Benét's Rea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tavernier, Jean-Baptiste:
Cologne (Köln): Corneille Egmon & ses Associez, 1675. Ausgabe aus dem Jahr der Erstausgabe. 386 Seiten. Book is in a good condition for its age. The spine has a couple of small holes, because of worms, which can be seen on the pages 251 to 350, too. Still the bookblock is in a clean and extraordinary state. With the usual library-characteristics. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 – 1689) was a 17th-century French gem merchant and traveler. This book contains his first and sixth jouney to Constantinople. Sprache: Französisch [Attributes: First Edition]

Twysden [or Twisden], Roger (1597-1672)
London: Printed for Robert Pawlet ..., 1675. [8],198,[2]pp. Quarto. Extracted from binding. Title in red and black, Royal Coat of Arms on title, slight tanning and faint foxing, R2-3 with clean tears in from foremargin (no loss), otherwise a very good copy. Third edition of one of Twysden's most widely read antiquarian works, first published in 1657. It is a "detailed account of the increase of papal powers over England from the Saxons to the Reformation ... [arguing] ... that it was the Church of England, rather than Rome, which had held fast to the true faith. Twysden denied that the English church 'made a departure from the Church, which is the ground and pillar of truth' (p. 196). This temperate and urbane argument placed Twysden within the tradition of earlier apologists for the Church of England such as Richard Hooker and Thomas Fuller" - DNB. ESTC R15191. WING T3554. altkolorierter u. vergrößerter Kupferstich v. Anna Beek n. Luyken ( 1675 ) b. Anna Beek, um 1700, 40,5 x 32,5 (H) Zu Anna Beek siehe Wurzbach, Niederl. Künstler, I,68. Tadellos erhalten !.

[HEAD (Richard)]:
London, Printed by W. D. and are to be sold at the Sign of the SHip in St. Mary Axe, and by most Booksellers, 1675, 1675. Full Book Title: Proteus Redivivus: Or the Art of Wheedling, Or Insinuation Obtain'd by General Conversation, and Extracted from the several Humours, Inclinations, and Passions of both Sexes, respecting their several Ages, and suiting each Profession or Occupation. Collected and Methodized By the Author of the First Part of the English Rogue. FIRST EDITI0N. 8vo, 168 x 102 mms., pp. [xvi], 352, later calf (18th century), rebacked, with new end-papers, raised bands between gilt rules on spine, title blocked in gilt on spine; ex Harvard Library with "released" stamp on verso of title-page, text a little browned, lower margin of last seven leaves slightly wormed, corners worn, but a reasonably good copy, with contemporary owner's name on title-page: "Willm. Wilson's/ July 11th/ Anno [?1675]" and the initial "P" slightly further down. The Irish-born writer Richard Head (c. 1637 - ?1686) made a name for himself with the publication in 1665 of The English Rogue. Much of what Head has to say about the Science [sic] of wheedling probably sounds commonplace in the 21st century, though the number of instances that one hears about or reads of people conned out of large sums of money suggest that the effectiveness of wheedling hasn't diminished since 1675. Head gave adumbrations of this theme in a book known only by its third edition, published also in 1675, The Miss Display'd, with All her Wheedling Arts and Circumventions.

IRENAEUS, Bishop of Lyon
Lutetiae Parisiorum, 1675. - 1675 Against Heresies Irenaeus Early Church Doctrine Gnosticism MAGIC Sorcery Saint Irenaeus was an early 2nd-century Bishop of Lyon who is mostly remembered for his writings which helped develop early Christian doctrine and theology. His best-known work was ‘Adversus Haereses,’ a book written against Gnosticism and heresy, which he considered to be a prominent threat to the Church. In the first portion of ‘Against Heresies,’ Irenaeus discusses uses of magic and sorcery in religious gatherings by Simon Magus and attempts to disprove its validity through evidence found in the Gospels. Dated from 180AD, ‘Against Heresies’ was written to refute the teachings of Gnostic groups and instead deliver a focus on the teachings and sermons of Jesus. Irenaeus used the teachings and writings of Justin Martyr and Theophilus of Antioch for inspiration for ‘Adversus’. In doing so, this book became one of the most important exercises on Christian apologetics showing “careful attention to how best to refute the arguments of the opponent.” (Heide, p. 15). This 1675 edition features both Latin and Greek text, red and black title page inks, plus charming title vignette. A fine work! Item number: #2205 Price: $499 IRENAEUS, Bishop of Lyon Sancti Irenaei Lugdunensis Episcopi & martyris, Adversus Valentini, & similium Gnosticorum haereses, libri quinque : jam tertio diligenti editorum codicum collatione, vetustissimi etiam, magnaeque fidei manuscripti codicis, atque alterius Vaticani, ab innumeris mendis repurgati, & al … [Click Below for Full Description]
