Colonna, F. [Columna]
Kiliae [Kiel], Reumann, 1675. Small 4to (19.8 x 16.0 cm). [xii], 44, [x] pp., 23 (groups of) woodcuts on the text pages, wood-engraved vignette on the last text page. Eighteenth-century blind wrappers. In green portfolio. Second edition of the first 1616 edition by the Neapolitan botanist and zoologist Fabio Colonna (1567-1640), dealing with molluscs which produce the purple dye that was very important for colouring fabrics and other materials. This edition was edited by Johann-Daniel Major (1634-1693), professor of medicine at Kiel University and generally credited for the invention of blood infusions, as expounded in his "Chirurgia infusoria" of 1667. This edition consists of a dedication page to Augusto Friderico heredi Norwagiae (August Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf), a preface by Major, twenty short chapters on various molluscs and a brachiopod, and an index. The wood-engravings of shells (mainly gastropods and bivalves) and living animals are quite good and some serve as the type-figures of species validly described in the Linnaean era and, with a few exceptions, are still identifiable to the species level today. Nissen records another 188 pages written by Major, apparently containing "Annotationes ad Columnam De Purpura", and a "Doctrinae de testaceis specimen . cum dictionario ostracologico", but those works by Major not present in our copy, which appears to be restricted to the subject dealt with by Colonna, as the title does not mention these parts. Binding weak, edges a bit frayed, paper lightly toned, otherwise a very good copy of this very scarce boo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Triangular Trade]: [Charles II]
London: Printed by the Assigns of John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1675. Broadside, 22 x 14 1/2 inches, printed on two sheets. Old fold lines. Repaired with tissue on verso along vertical fold. A few other small tears or tissue repairs. Very good. A rare broadside, announcing the decree of the English government that all foreign goods destined for British colonies must first pass through England, a policy of mercantilism later termed the "triangle trade." "This program permitted the profits from colonial trade and commerce to center in England, promoted British shipping, and enabled the British government to support itself by taxing this trade as it flowed through England" - DAH. The English government began its mercantilist policies under the Commonwealth government, in a series of "navigation acts" which regulated English trade. The first Navigation Act, passed in 1651, targeted Dutch commerce. It stipulated that only English ships could carry freight into English territories, and that if a ship was not English, then it could only carry goods from the country from whence it hailed - i.e., Dutch ships could only import Dutch goods, etc. Further Acts passed in 1660 and 1663, under the Restoration government of Charles II, isolated trade even further, mandating that British colonial goods only be imported to England and forbidding English trade on anything other than English vessels. This policy of trade, which was continued for the next two hundred years, marked the ascent of British colonial mercantilism and planted the seeds of discontent which resulted in the Ameri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Whitney Hoff, n°220.
