Third edition, the first edition was published in 1668. Thomas Hobbes
74-Zeidlerum and Lipsiae-Job. Frid and Joh. Wittigau, 1674. Book. Asought after collection ofscarcephilosophical works from early English political philosopher, Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury. Written in Latin. Thomas Hobbes was one of the founders of modern political philosophy. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a social contract remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Hobbes was a champion of absolutism for the sovereign but he also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be representative and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. Two works bound as one. First volume dated from COPAC using pagination and publisher. Preface present from the 1646 edition. Featuring an engraved title page, decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals. Condition: In contemporary calf binding. Externally, rubbed with wearto the extremities and spine. Slight loss to the tail of the spine and rear hinge is very slightly starting. Internally, generally firmly bound, although with the odd leaf workin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Redi Francesco
Dorso a tre nervi. [Click Below for Full Description]

(Allestree, Richard).
Oxford: at the Theatre in Oxford(1674). Sm. 4to., black turkey morocco tooled in gilt in an all-over design with drawer-handle tools, curls and flower head tools; decorated with silver paint. The spine is divided into six compartments by five raised bands, which are also tooled in gilt (echoing the covers), with silver paint. The title is gilt lettered in the second compartment from the top. One corner and the very head of the rear joint have been skillfully repaired. Marbled endleaves. The binding is the work of the Queen's Binder A and appears to be a twin of a copy of the same title (but the later, 1675, printing), given to the British Library as part of the Henry David gift [See: No 118].Hobson and Nixon have had much to say about the forty years following the Restoration of King Charles II to his throne in 1660, which has been called THE GOLDEN AGE OF ENGLISH BOOKBINDING. Nixon points out that there were at least four Queen's binders; viz., A, B, C and D, who all started work in 1670, and all made use of the recently introduced drawer-handle tools and volutes with pointellé outlines rather than floral volutes much used by the other binders of the period. This is a FINE EXAMPLE on a most fitting book. Allestree was a man of extensive learning, of moderate views and a fine preacher. He was generous and charitable, of "a solid and masculine kindness," and of a temper hot, but completely under control [Encyclopædia Britannica 11th ed.].; A FINE RESTORATION BINDING BY THE QUEEN'S BINDER A

VERDIZZOTTI FRANCESCO
Giovanni Giacomo Hertz, Venezia. Venezia (1674) - Giovanni Giacomo Hertz. Prima rarissima edizione. Size: 1 vol. in-folio (342 mm x 238 mm ca.) RAY, John.
London: by H. Bruges for Tho. Burrell, 1674. Octavo (146 x 86 mm). Contemporary unlettered speckled sheep, flat spine with double blind rules, covers with double blind rule border and thistle corner-pieces, blind edge roll, red speckled edges. Extremities of spine chipped, lower joint split at head, wear to corners, front pastedown lifted, prelims lightly soiled yet still an attractive copy in a period binding, without the initial blank [A1] but with the final blank [L4] (although largely torn away). Title printed in red and black, woodcut initials. First edition, "the earliest attempt to gather, interpret and discuss the remnants of older and local language as a contribution not only to the better understanding of the provincial communities, but to those antiquarian studies which were leading men to a knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic tongues" (Raven). This copy of the issue with a comma after "words" in the title but no comma after "Ray"; "Birds" and "Fishes" in the title are printed in red; according to ESTC, this is the scarcer of the two issues. John Ray (1627-1705), "the son of a blacksmith, became one of England's greatest naturalists. He was pre-eminently a botanist (he originated the division of plants into monocotyledons and dicotyledons), but also took up the unfinished ornithological work of his friend Francis Willughby. He also published A Collection of English Proverbs (1670) and was keenly interested in philology" (Oxford Companion to English Literature, fifth edition). With some interesting neat contemporary marginalia to F1r (adding the word "Fell" an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Basel, Jean Louis Brandmuller, 1740. In 4° gr. (cm. 38,5x24), piena perg. coeva con nervi, tit. in oro al dorso, tagli a spruzzi rossi, 6 voll. pp. (24nn)-XVI-703 ; (2nn)-723; (2nn)-836; 1103; (2nn)-1009; (2nn)-1106. All'antip. del I vol. bellissima acquaforte incisa da Seiller Schaffusianus. Front. in rosso e nero. Compless. bella copia.

Valle, Pietro della.
Geneva, Johann Herman Widerhold, 1674. Folio. 4 vols. bound as 1. [20], 218, [12], [2 blank]; [4], 236, [12]; [4], 244, [13], [1 blank]; [6], 231, [17] pp. First title-page printed in red and black, each title-page with Widerholds's woodcut device (motto: "Gradatim ad sidera tollor"). With 31 engraved plates (1 folding), including frontispiece and portraits of the author and his wife, by Jean Jacques Thourneyser. Further with woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, factotums and several small woodcuts in the text. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine-title, blue sprinkled edges. First edition in German of Pietro della Valle's deservedly famous narrative of his travels in the Middle East, with an excellent account of Muscat and the Arabian Gulf and references to Dibba. Della Valle, an Italian nobleman, sailed from Venice in 1614 to Istanbul, where he arrived in August 1614, spending a year to explore the city. He continued to Rhodes, Alexandria, Rosetta, Cairo, crossing the Sinai desert to Jerusalem, Damascus and Aleppo. From there Della Valle proceeded to Isfahan (Iran) to meet the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas I. He sojourned in Persia until early 1623, witnessing and commenting on the escalating conflict between Shah Abbas and the Portuguese empire. In 1621 he decided to return to Europe and set off for the Persian Gulf, but the Persian and English blockade prevented his sailing. By way of India he finally sailed for Muscat in January 1623, from which he crossed the Arabian Gulf to Basra, continuing overland to Aleppo, arriving in Europe in 1626. During his travels he wrote r … [Click Below for Full Description]

CERTANI GIACOMO (sec. XVII).
Reggio Emilia, Prospero Vedrotti, 1675, 1674. In - folio; 8 cc. Ruggieri 920. Berlin Katalog 3222. Vinet 816. Bertarelli, G.
