Theatro Sheldoniano, 1674. "Edizione originale". Così Moncada Lo Giudice "Una biblioteca siciliana", 259. Cfr. anche Mira,I, p. 111: "Raro" - Nissen,179 - Pritzel,859 - Brunet,I,1021, "Paolo Boccone (in religione frate Silvio) nacque a Palermo nel 1633 da famiglia originaria di Savona; dopo aver fatto i suoi studi letterari si diede a quelli della storia naturale pei quali aveva somma tendenza. Milton, John
London: S. Simmons, 1674. Rare Second edition of Milton's masterpiece. Octavo, with portrait frontispiece, contemporary calf, rebacked, original marbled edges. In very good condition with some toning to the text, contemporary name. First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Milton's masterpiece... Milton performed an artist's service to his God" (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful."

Bruxellis, typis Eugenii Henrici Fricx. Cm. 13,5, pp. (12) 378 (6).
In 16mo; pp.12n.nn., 633, 3n.nn. Lo Cunto de li Cunte ebbe grande influenza in tutta Europa su scrittori come C. Brentano, i fratelli Grimm, Perrault, Carlo Gozzi, Wieland. [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Hobbes
74-Zeidlerum and Lipsiae-Job. Frid and Joh. Wittigau, 1674. Book. Asought after collection ofscarcephilosophical works from early English political philosopher, Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury. Written in Latin. Thomas Hobbes was one of the founders of modern political philosophy. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a social contract remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Hobbes was a champion of absolutism for the sovereign but he also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be representative and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. Two works bound as one. First volume dated from COPAC using pagination and publisher. Preface present from the 1646 edition. Featuring an engraved title page, decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals. Condition: In contemporary calf binding. Externally, rubbed with wearto the extremities and spine. Slight loss to the tail of the spine and rear hinge is very slightly starting. Internally, generally firmly bound, although with the odd leaf workin … [Click Below for Full Description]
