GOGLER, Carl de.
Ad 1: VD17 23:242182F (3 copies); Waller 3622; cf. Krivatsy 4870 & 4871. Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary", bound with an extensive manuscript pharmacopoeia containing hundreds of medicinal recipes. The manuscript is in several hands, but one appears to match Johan Schröder's 1674 owner's inscription in the Gogler, which notes that he is a surgeon, so he is probably at least in part the author/compiler. We do not know whether the author is related to Johann Schroeder (1600-1664), born in Westfalen, author of Phamacopoeia medico-chymica sive thesarus pharmacologicus (Ulm, 1641). Little is known about Carl de Gogler. His book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). The first edition, in folio format, was extensively revised for the present second edition and the illustrated engraved title-page added. With Schröders owner's inscription on the back of the engraved title-page. The Gogler lacks leaf L5 (pp. 169 & 170). With leaf 2[pi]1 of the manuscript detached, minor marginal damage to the printed title-page repaired and occasional minor stains, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is rubbed and dirty, with some cracks in the backstrip. A remarkable primary source for medicinal practices among the common people of Westfalen ca. 1674.

Widmann Cayet
[Click Below for Full Description]

LE BRUYN
5 vol. in 4. Veau brun de l'epoque. Cornelis De Bruijn, drawer, painter, traveler and writer of the so-called «Dutch Golden Age», travelled twice to the Middle East and Far East Asia, first between 1674 and 1693, and then again from 1701 to 1708. Having read all books in Greek and Latin about those regions, De Bruijn blends erudition and practical observations, often with some humour. The success of his book, however, was largely due to the splendid intaglio illustrations depicting many exotic landscapes, animals, peoples and social traditions. The text of this edition was slightly reworked by Banier and augmented with observations from other travelers who visited the same regions as De Bruijn.Complete copy with its portrait, five maps and 84 plates, in accordance with usual collations and Chadenat. Figures 13 to 17 and 89 to 91 do no exist, as their corresponding plates were never printed, again according to Chadonat. Ex-libris from the cabinet of Mr. Thomas de Lavalette. Slight rubbing on some of the boards and corners.Brunet III, 911; Chadenat, II, 5085.

Josselyn, John
London: Printed for Giles Widdows at the Green-Dragon in St. Paul's-Church-Yard, 1674. First edition. Woodcut winged dragon printer's device and license on leaf preceding title-page. [8], 279, [3,ads]pp. Small 8vo. Full brown 19th century morocco, a.e.g. Foxing. Bookplate of John Carter Brown (with duplicate stamp) and stamp. First edition. Woodcut winged dragon printer's device and license on leaf preceding title-page. [8], 279, [3,ads]pp. Small 8vo. This work has been called the "earliest work on the Natural History of New England" (Rich). Josselyn made two trips to America, in 1638-39 and 1663-71, both times landing at Boston and spending most of the time in Maine. His narrative is highly valued for its observations on the state of medicine and surgery in the colonies, as well as its natural history content. Much of the text consists of an extensive catalogue of the flora and fauna of the region, with specific details about the character and demeanor of the creatures encountered there. For example, we find here the first full descriptions of the cranberry, blueberry and wild turkey. Josselyn includes an historical chronology (which includes its own separate titlepage), but acquired his information second hand. This work was proceeded by a more straightforward natural history: New-England's rarities discovered in birds, beasts, fishes, serpents, and plants of that country (1672). It's worth noting that Josselyn hoped these might admit him to the Royal Society. As ODNB explains, election did not transpire. For all their undoubted quality "Josselyn's two works blend dispa … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHRADER, Justus (editor).
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Typis Abrahami Wolfgang, 1674. - 12mo, pp. (xxxii), 240, engraved title by Romeyn de Hooghe and 8 plates. Nineteenth century tree calf, gilt borders, spine richly gilt in compartments and with red morocco label, marbled edges and endpapers. Joints rubbed and just cracking at top, but a pretty copy. FIRST EDITION. This is for all practical purposes the first illustrated edition of William Harvey's De Generatione Animalium, 1651 (G&M 467), the most important book on embryology to appear during the seventeenth century. This work however also demonstrates original research in embryology on its own account. Under the editorship of Schrader it combines excerpts from Harvey?s epochal book with the illustrated publication of the extensive experiments on the development of the chick embryo made by the Dutch physician Wilhelm Langly in 1655. ?Langly mentions Harvey more than once, and evidently followed his example in careful observation, for his text is concise and accurate and his drawings very noteworthy? Langly?s figures?are therefore of interest in that they closely resemble the pictures which would have been needed for Harvey?s book had it been illustrated? (Needham, History of Embryology, pp. 153?154). Keynes 41. Russell, British Anatomy, 383.

He was responsible for the considerable expansion of the family's retail and wholesale drapery firm between 1892 and 1927. [Click Below for Full Description]

MAGNI CORNELIO.-
Parma, Galeazzo Rosati, 1688, 1674. [Click Below for Full Description]

(MINING LAWS, Germany)
Woodcut printer's device on title. 19 leaves, one blank leaf. Small folio, later 18th-century half-sheep & speckled boards, spine gilt. Eisleben: A. Koch, 1674. A most interesting volume containing a printed edition of mining laws of 1674 and three manuscript copies of mining laws of the 16th century, assembled by and bound for August Ferdinand, Graf von Veltheim (1741-1801). He was appointed in 1790 by Empress Catherine of Russia as general inspector of mines and saltworks in the western regions of the Russian empire. Geology and mining were favorite subjects and at his home in Harbke, he formed an important library along with a fine cabinet of minerals and fossils. His books, with their characteristic oval ownership stamp on the verso of the title of his son Röttger, still appear on the market with some regularity. They are always in very fine condition. Eisleben and Mansfeld in the eastern foothills of the Harz Mountains were important mining towns, where silver and copper mining took place from the beginning of the 13th century. The 52 sections in the printed collection of laws (dated 28 October 1673) - no copy in North America according to WorldCat - concern surveying, assaying standards, weighing instruments, labor laws, wages, division of profits, etc., etc. They reflect the practical concerns and problems of operating a mine. Also bound-in is an 18th-century manuscript copy, written in one neat hand on 63 leaves, of three mining laws of the 16th century: "Neue Ordnung und Reformation der Züsammensetzung Eislebishen und Mansfeldischen Bergkwergs...A … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINDEMONTE GIOVANNI
per Gio. Battista Merlo, 1674. Cm. 25, pp. (56) 730 + 1 c.b.
