Borch was a scientist, physician, and grammarian, a traveller, and well known for his published work throughout Europe. In the latter work, Borch discusses the writings of Geradus Joan … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Hobbes
Zeidlerum and Lipsiae: Job. Frid and Joh. Wittigau, 1674. Written in Latin. Thomas Hobbes was one of the founders of modern political philosophy. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Hobbes was a champion of absolutism for the sovereign but he also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. Two works bound as one. First volume dated from COPAC using pagination and publisher. Preface present from the 1646 edition. Featuring an engraved title page, decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals. In contemporary calf binding. Externally, rubbed with wear to the extremities and spine. Slight loss to the tail of the spine and rear hinge is very slightly starting. Internally, generally firmly bound, although with the odd leaf working slightly loose. Light instances of spotting throughout and with some uncut pages. Ink signature to the front free endpaper. Overall Cond … [Click Below for Full Description]

1674. THE WORKS Of Mr ABRAHAM COWLEY Consisting of Those which were formerly Printed And Those which he Design'd for the Press Now Published out of the Authors ORIGINAL COPIES The Fourth Edition London: Printed by F.M. for Henry Herringman 1674 * * * * Folio (12 x 7.5) [42], 41, [1], 80, [4], 70, 154, 23, [1], 148pp. Full blind-tooled leather (calf) Frontispiece portrait Fourth edition Rare, greatly preserved antiquarian edition of the works by Abraham Cowley (1618-1667), English metaphysical poet and one of the leading English essayists of the 17th century, with fourteen printings of his Works published between 1668 and 1721. In spite of the historical troubles of the times, so fatal to poetic fame, his reputation steadily increased; when, on his return to England in 1656, he published a volume of his collected poetical works, he found himself without a rival in public esteem. This volume includes his later works, the Pindarique Odes, the Davideis, the Mistress, and Miscellanies. The Mistress was the most popular poetic reading of the age, the last and most violent expression of the amatory affectation of the 17th century. Following the passing of Oliver Cromwell in 1658, Cowley took advantage of the confusion and escaped to Paris, where he remained until the Restoration brought him back to Charles' train. In 1663 Cowley published Verses Upon Several Occasions, which includes The Complaint. His pamphlet on The Advancement of Experimental Philosophy, 1661, preceded the foundation of the Royal Society. Cowley was buried in Westminster Abbey beside the ashes of Chaucer and Spe … [Click Below for Full Description]

An attempt is the first, and most important, of his Cutlerian Lectures, which contains ‘some of the most pertinent remarks about gravitation that were made before Newton’ (Allen Chapman, England’s Leonardo: Robert Hooke (1635-1703) and the Art of Experiment in Restoration England). In addition, the work also contains the first record of stellar observation in daylight. ‘This may well have been the first clear statement of what came to be called "Newton’s first law of motion"’ (Nicholas Kollerstrom, How Newton failed to discover the Law of Gravity, Annals of Science 56, 1999). Overall a very good. copy. "When theatres reopened after the return of the Stuarts, it was by no means certain whether or not Shakespeare's plays would be part of the repertory of the Restoration theatres...It was mainly due to the endeavors of Sir William Davenant and John Dryden that Shakespeare's plays remained popular. Dryden admired Shakespeare as 'the man who of all modern and perhaps ancient poets had the largest and most comprehensive soul'" (Auberlen). Dryden's operatic adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is a key example of the Restoration dramatist's efforts to reshape earlier plays to the tastes of the current time. His version of the romance was tailored to the preferred language and wit of the court, which had begun to favor more formal diction and a greater adherence to classical expectations of dramatic action. An important play in its own time, which helped preserve Shakespe … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOGLER, Carl de.
Ad 1: VD17 23:242182F (3 copies); Waller 3622; cf. Krivatsy 4870 & 4871. Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary", bound with an extensive manuscript pharmacopoeia containing hundreds of medicinal recipes. The manuscript is in several hands, but one appears to match Johan Schröder's 1674 owner's inscription in the Gogler, which notes that he is a surgeon, so he is probably at least in part the author/compiler. We do not know whether the author is related to Johann Schroeder (1600-1664), born in Westfalen, author of Phamacopoeia medico-chymica sive thesarus pharmacologicus (Ulm, 1641). Little is known about Carl de Gogler. His book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). The first edition, in folio format, was extensively revised for the present second edition and the illustrated engraved title-page added. With Schröders owner's inscription on the back of the engraved title-page. The Gogler lacks leaf L5 (pp. 169 & 170). With leaf 2[pi]1 of the manuscript detached, minor marginal damage to the printed title-page repaired and occasional minor stains, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is rubbed and dirty, with some cracks in the backstrip. A remarkable primary source for medicinal practices among the common people of Westfalen ca. 1674.

Widmann Cayet
[Click Below for Full Description]

5 vol. in 4. Veau brun de l'epoque. Cornelis De Bruijn, drawer, painter, traveler and writer of the so-called «Dutch Golden Age», travelled twice to the Middle East and Far East Asia, first between 1674 and 1693, and then again from 1701 to 1708. Having read all books in Greek and Latin about those regions, De Bruijn blends erudition and practical observations, often with some humour. The success of his book, however, was largely due to the splendid intaglio illustrations depicting many exotic landscapes, animals, peoples and social traditions. The text of this edition was slightly reworked by Banier and augmented with observations from other travelers who visited the same regions as De Bruijn.Complete copy with its portrait, five maps and 84 plates, in accordance with usual collations and Chadenat. Figures 13 to 17 and 89 to 91 do no exist, as their corresponding plates were never printed, again according to Chadonat. Ex-libris from the cabinet of Mr. Thomas de Lavalette. Josselyn, John
London: Printed for Giles Widdows at the Green-Dragon in St. Paul's-Church-Yard, 1674. First edition. Woodcut winged dragon printer's device and license on leaf preceding title-page. [8], 279, [3,ads]pp. Small 8vo. Full brown 19th century morocco, a.e.g. Foxing. Bookplate of John Carter Brown (with duplicate stamp) and stamp. First edition. Woodcut winged dragon printer's device and license on leaf preceding title-page. [8], 279, [3,ads]pp. Small 8vo. This work has been called the "earliest work on the Natural History of New England" (Rich). Josselyn made two trips to America, in 1638-39 and 1663-71, both times landing at Boston and spending most of the time in Maine. His narrative is highly valued for its observations on the state of medicine and surgery in the colonies, as well as its natural history content. Much of the text consists of an extensive catalogue of the flora and fauna of the region, with specific details about the character and demeanor of the creatures encountered there. For example, we find here the first full descriptions of the cranberry, blueberry and wild turkey. Josselyn includes an historical chronology (which includes its own separate titlepage), but acquired his information second hand. This work was proceeded by a more straightforward natural history: New-England's rarities discovered in birds, beasts, fishes, serpents, and plants of that country (1672). It's worth noting that Josselyn hoped these might admit him to the Royal Society. As ODNB explains, election did not transpire.
