BARBA, Alvaro Alonso.
Second edition in English of the first two Books of this celebrated treatise on mining and metallurgy, the first significant work on the subject in Spanish, and the first work on mining in the Americas. The first Book deals with the generation of metals and things accompanying them, and the second with the extraction of silver by mercury. It also includes the earliest special chapter on petroleum products (Book I, ch. 9) in Peru and elsewhere. The methods of extraction that Barba himself discovered were in large part responsible for the vast wealth that Spain gained from Peru. The book was kept secret in Spain, but when the Earl of Sandwich was Ambassador to Spain, he obtained a copy and translated two of the five books and had them published by Samuel Mearne, the royal bookbinder and publisher. Wing B678 and 682. Another issue (or possibly edition) of the first Book has the title The First Book of the Art of Mettals. Duveen p. 42; Neville I, p. 70 (both with the alternate title). Hoover catalogue 83. Sabin 3254. Norman catalogue 115. No complete English edition of all five Books was done until 1923.

Francis Bacon, Interpreted from the Latin by Gilbert Wats
T. Williams, At the Golden Ball, Osier Lane, London, 1674. Full Calf Hardcover - spine probably repaired in last century with five hinges, minor foxing to the free end papers, printed pages are bright and clean considering their age. Bacon entered Trinity College, Cambridge, at the age of 12, and became Lord Chancellor of England under James I. Here is the book in which he effectively founded the modern, experimental, scientific, approach to understanding. Before Bacon, 'learning' largely meant memorizing the classics, especially Aristotle , and acceding to every diktat of established religion. In 'The Advancement of Learning', he argued that the only knowledge of importance was that which could be discovered by observation - 'empirical' knowledge rooted in the natural world. His philosophy totally revolutionized thinking, it became known as methodology. This encouraging and aided many in the centuries to come such as Newton, Darwin etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

FALKNER, William
Printed by J[ohn] M[acock] for Walter Kettilby, London, 1674. [16], 552pp. With an initial imprimatur leaf. Handsomely bound in contemporary panelled calf, richly tooled in gilt, gilt supra libros of The Society of Writers to the Signet to both boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, A.E.G. Lightly rubbed, slight loss to foot of spine. Marbled endpapers, recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP, printed shelf-label to verso of FFEP, very small hole to text of leaf F4 - without loss of sense, small hole to margin of S3, lightly spotted. The first edition of Church of England clergyman William Falkner's (d. 1682) treatise arguing for religious uniformity. The preacher's primary contention is that devotional texts ought to be standardised and that the liturgy be the keystone around which all services should to be constructed in order to promote national unity. Falkner further maintains that whilst the church is legitimated by the will of God alone it's vocation must extend to encompass the affirmation and legitimation of the monarchy, and indeed royal supremacy, for the betterment of the realm. Innocenzo MATTEI
Acquaforte e bulino, 1674, firmata e datata in lastra in alto. … [Click Below for Full Description]

This work became in important influence of Machiavelli's 'The Prince', and is thought to be the first 'Machiavellian' work, prior to Machiavelli himself. This 1674 two-part edition features both Greek and Latin texts and was edited by Johannes Leunclavius, a well-known 16th-century Xenophon scholar. Paradise Lost is a blank-verse poem that relates the story of Adam and Eve's expulsion from the idyllic Garden of Eden. Originally published in ten books, Milton revised the first edition by breaking two longer chapters in half, creating a total of twelve books. Like Virgil's Aeneid, Paradise Lost is half the length of both of Homer's epics. Milton began composing Paradise Lost after he had gone completely blind; he memorized his verses and orated them to friends and family for inscription. HARVEY, William
1674 William Harvey Medicine Generation Childbirth Embryology OBGYN Illustrated First illustrated edition of most important book on embryology! An important medical treatise on generation, embryology, and conception by famous English physiologist William Harvey. “After the publication of ‘De motu cordis,’ Harvey turned his attention to the study of generation. Even if Harvey had not discovered the circulation of the blood, his remarkable work on embryology would have placed him in the front ranks of biological scientists. Without benefit of the compound microscope, his work was necessarily limited; nevertheless, nothing comparable had been done since Aristotle. He disbelieved the previously held doctrine of 'preformation' of the fetus, maintaining instead that it proceeds from the ovum by gradual building up of its parts" (HoH). This book, while not as medically polarizing as his treatise on blood circulation, includes a section that is often considered the first work on obstetrics and midwifery published by an English physician. (GM). This 1674 is a subsequent issue of the original 1651 first edition. However, this printing is the first illustrated edition which includes 9 full-page engravings which depict embryos and the fertilization processes in animals. It features commentary, notes, and research of Wilhelm Langly and was edited by Justus Schrader. Item number: #3109 Price: $1500 HARVEY, William Observationes et historiae omnes & singulae e Guiljelmi Harvei libello De generatione animalium excerptae, & in accuratissimum ordinem redactae. : Item Wilhelmi Langly De gener … [Click Below for Full Description]
