First edition in German of Pietro della Valle's deservedly famous narrative of his travels in the Middle East, with an excellent account of Muscat and the Arabian Gulf and references to Dibba. Della Valle, an Italian nobleman, sailed from Venice in 1614 to Istanbul, where he arrived in August 1614, spending a year to explore the city. He continued to Rhodes, Alexandria, Rosetta, Cairo, crossing the Sinai desert to Jerusalem, Damascus and Aleppo. From there Della Valle proceeded to Isfahan (Iran) to meet the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas I. He sojourned in Persia until early 1623, witnessing and commenting on the escalating conflict between Shah Abbas and the Portuguese empire. In 1621 he decided to return to Europe and set off for the Persian Gulf, but the Persian and English blockade prevented his sailing. By way of India he finally sailed for Muscat in January 1623, from which he crossed the Arabian Gulf to Basra, continuing overland to Aleppo, arriving in Europe in 1626. Anthony Wood
London: Sheldonian Theatre. Good Frontispiece intact: leather boards a little bereft but intact and attached:gorgeous capitals and decorative flourishes throughout. Anthony Wood was a curmudgeonly scholar of Oxford: he devoted his life to the study of the history of the institution and playing the bells. This is one of his books and it is a litany of various attendees of Oxford, what they did and brief biographical data. According to some, this was often scurrilous. A massive tome, the leather is rough, dry and scuffed (like the Author), the spine cracked and chipped, and there are a few tears to some of the pages. There is writing throughout, especially after the section labeled "Collegium Universitatis" where the various schools or colleges seem to be written at the top of each page in a neat hand. The material contained herein is fascinating, once one takes the time to translate, and the capitals, embellishments, chapter headings and such are gorgeous: beautifully designed and executed. The Frontispiece is classic with Charles II handing over the charter to the school to the accompaniment of angels and with Britannia (?) looking on. wonderful stuff. The first part is a year by year history of Oxford while the second is a history of the various schools. Fold Out Map in good shape with a little chunk missing at the bend but legible and all the actual "map" parts intact. Very Good Condition: Elephant Folio: 11 1/2" X 10" X 3": leather binding with pitting and scuffs and cracks although there is an embossed strip still visible: spine is ridged and banded with gilt lettering … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Machiavelli, Niccolo
London: Printed for Charles Harper, 1674. Rare second collected edition in English of The Prince and the Discourses on Livy, translated by Edward Dacres, Machiavelli's first English translator, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Machiavelli. Octavo, bound in full contemporary calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, morocco spine label, with frontispiece portrait of Machiavelli, rebacked. In excellent condition with some light browning and wear. "Hitherto political speculation had tended to be a rhetorical exercise based on the implicit assumption of Church or Empire. Machiavelli founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind-it should be remembered that a parallel work to 'The Prince' was his historical essay on the first ten books of Livy. Politics was a science to be divorced entirely from ethics, and nothing must stand in the way of its machinery" (PMM 63). "Machiavelli is a popular symbol for the... completely unprincipled, and unscrupulous politician whose whole philosophy is that the end justifies the means. The highest law to Machiavelli, it is universally believed, was political expediency... From a comparative reading of [The Discourses and The Prince], one must come to the startling conclusion that Machiavelli was a convinced republican. He had no liking for despotism, and considered a combination of popular and monarchical government best. No ruler was safe without the favor of his people. The most stable states are those ruled by princes checked by constitutional limitations... His ideal government was the old Roman republic, and he cons … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Hobbes
Zeidlerum and Lipsiae: Job. Frid and Joh. Wittigau, 1674. Written in Latin. Thomas Hobbes was one of the founders of modern political philosophy. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Hobbes was a champion of absolutism for the sovereign but he also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. Two works bound as one. First volume dated from COPAC using pagination and publisher. Preface present from the 1646 edition. Featuring an engraved title page, decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals. CONDITION In contemporary calf binding. Externally, rubbed with wear to the extremities and spine. Slight loss to the tail of the spine and rear hinge is very slightly starting. Internally, generally firmly bound, although with the odd leaf working slightly loose. XENOPHON
Londini: J. Redmayne prostant apud R. Chiswel. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Men who respond to good fortune with modesty and kindness are harder to find than those who face adversity with courage." - Xenophon Xenophon, an ancient Greek philosopher, wrote an extensive collection of works including 'Cyropaedia'. This fictional biography of Cyrus the Great, is a satirical work portraying the way that the general public blindly follows its leader. Xenophon includes his own observations of humans as they obey the laws that were laid out for them. This work became in important influence of Machiavelli's 'The Prince', and is thought to be the first 'Machiavellian' work, prior to Machiavelli himself. This 1674 two-part edition features both Greek and Latin texts and was edited by Johannes Leunclavius, a well-known 16th-century Xenophon scholar.

SCHRADER, Justus (editor).
FIRST EDITION. This is for all practical purposes the first illustrated edition of William Harvey's De Generatione Animalium, 1651 (G&M 467), the most important book on embryology to appear during the seventeenth century. This work however also demonstrates original research in embryology on its own account. Under the editorship of Schrader it combines excerpts from Harvey's epochal book with the illustrated publication of the extensive experiments on the development of the chick embryo made by the Dutch physician Wilhelm Langly in 1655. "Langly mentions Harvey more than once, and evidently followed his example in careful observation, for his text is concise and accurate and his drawings very noteworthy... Langly's figures...are therefore of interest in that they closely resemble the pictures which would have been needed for Harvey's book had it been illustrated" (Needham, History of Embryology, pp. 153-144). MAYOW, John.
FIRST EDITION. G&M 578 and 2726.2. Five treatises by Mayow, incorporating revised versions of the two on respiration and rickets, previously published as the Tractatus Duo.In the first and longest treatise, Mayow gives a chemical history of nitre and spirit of nitre, and of combustion and the effect of respiration on air, concluding that air is composed of two distinct gases. In the second treatise, he perfectly describes the mechanism of respiration, with the movement of the ribs and diaphragm, and makes the discovery of the double articulation of the ribs with the spine. He correctly asserts that the function of breathing is to bring air into contact with the blood. He was the first to locate the seat of animal heat in the muscles, and was the first to make the definite suggestion that it is only a special fraction of the air that is of use in respiration. The third is on the respiration of the foetus in the womb, in which he says that the foetus requires "nitro-aerial particles" just as respiring animals do. "These splendid words... show that, by the time of Mayow, chemical embryology had definitely come into being" (Needham, History of Embryology, pp. 149-153).In the fourth treatise, on muscular motion, "Mayow recorded a case of mitral stenosis, probably the first description" (G&M, confusingly giving the date of the first edition with a note to the second). He contended that muscles contract by contortion, rather than by inflation, and that the active agent is "nitro-aerial particles", or what was later to be called oxygen. The fifth and last treatise is on ricket … [Click Below for Full Description]

This is an unusually attractive example of a rare work. ---- Wing B 945; Babson 249; Wallis 358.4; Sotheran 5816 (2); DSB I, 475.

Light instances of spotting throughout and with some uncut pages. Ink signature to the front free endpaper. Ov … [Click Below for Full Description]
