Machiavelli, Niccolo. Translated by Edward Dacres.
Printed for Charles Harper.and John Amery, London, 1674. Finely bound second edition of Edward Dacres' historic translation of the works of Niccolo Machiavelli, including The Prince. Octavo, bound in full green morocco, gilt tiles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers. In very good condition, housed in a custom marbled slipcase. Rare. The Prince became popular in England in the late 16th century in Italian as well as French and Latin translations. The first English translation to appear in print was Edward Dacres's 1640 edition. Although it is relatively short, Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. It is generally agreed that it was especially innovative for its time and is often considered to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. 1674. VERY Nice. See Description Below. Offered Here: Leybourn, William, The Compleat Surveyor: Containing The whole Art of Surveying of Land, by the Plain Table, Theodolite, Circumferentor, and Peractor. (London, 1674), Third Edition. The Compleat Surveyor was a major work of the period with five editions from 1653 thru 1722. Each edition of the book was larger in content and substance and brought the work to a standard that exceeded most others of the time. George Washington apparently focused on Leybourn?s Compleat Surveyor as a young man studying the art of surveying. Details about the book: [20], 1-107, then 429 pages plus a portrait frontispiece and five folding plates; bound in contemporary calf with marbled endpapers re-backed in recent calf with gilt decoration and a black morocco spine label." The main text is complete, very nicely printed within printed borders and with margins. As with all copies of this edition, the pagination is irregular, jumping at the end of the third book, between page [108] and page [183], at which the fourth book begins. The plates, like the text pages, are clean and crisp but with one plate dusty at the fore edge. The pages before the main text, however, leave a bit to be desired. The central engraved portrait of the frontispiece has been laid onto a contemporary leaf, as has the area of the title page within its printed border. There has been some damage to the title page printing with four or five words rubbed from the sub-title. Furthermore, the first page of the "General Survey" - table of contents - has been misbound so as to imme … [Click Below for Full Description]

[KRAFFT, Abraham Friedrich].
First edition, rarely found complete, of a detailed account of animals that are harmful to people and to their livestock, the treatment of bites, illnesses and poisonings they cause and instructions for their extermination. It covers animals on land, in water, in the air and underground. The large folding plate in vol. II shows 38 insects, including 14 caterpillars, and the two engraved title-pages for volumes I and II show well over 50 (vol. I) about 25 (vol. II) animals, not counting a large group of ants and many birds in the distance in the former. The book also provides information about uses of the (dead) harmful animals for making clothes and medicines, and includes many medicinal recipes. The animals discussed include wolves, foxes, mad dogs, birds (including birds of prey), snakes, frogs, toads, rats, mice, moles, beetles, caterpillars, bed bugs, lice, fleas and other insects, spiders, snails and other molluscs, various kinds of worms and even a dragon and basilisk (the latter illustrated in the engraved title-page to volume I: it looks more cock-like than snake-like, so most people would now call it a cockatrice, but the two have long been used almost interchangeably). Krafft notes that dragons are rarely or never found in Germany but says one was found in Bohemia a few years ago and that they are more common in Nubia, Libya and the largest ones in "Indien", probably meaning the East Indies and perhaps based on reports of the Komodo dragon. With an owner's inscription of Stefan von Clodt (1674-1737), Vicar General and Provost of Michaelsberg in Fulda, on the title- … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEEUWENSON, Joannes (Pieter Arend LEUPE, ed. & intro.).
First publication of the manuscript journal of Joannes Leeuwenson's 1674/75 overland journey from Colombo (Ceylon/Sri Lanka), along the west coast of India to Banda Abbas (Iran, at the Strait of Hormuz), Basra (Iraq), Aleppo (Syria), and Iskenderun (Turkey), then on to Livorno (Italy), and through Italy and Germany to Amsterdam. The manuscript itself is titled "Daghregister van de Landreijs, gedaeen bij mij Joannes Leeuwenson, ..." Although described as an journey over land, parts naturally had to be made by sea as well, and Leeuwenson names numerous ships in the various Dutch fleets, as well as the enemy ships they encountered. He quotes in full (4 pp.) the letter with orders given to him by VOC director François de Haese at Banda Abbas as well as several other letters he received or wrote. He gives a detailed description of the terrain and the difficulties in finding and acquiring supplies, beasts of burden, etc., and relates his encounters with Persians, Ottomans and other Islamic peoples. In very good condition. An important early journal of an overland voyage through India, Iran and the Middle East..

Wedel, Georg Wolffgang
Johannes Fritsch, Jena, 1674. Wedel, Georg Wolffgang (1645-1721). Opiologia ad mentem academia naturae curiosorum. 4to. [8], 170, [2]pp. Engraved title vignette. Jena: Johannes Fritsch, 1674. 198 x 152 mm. Old half vellum, paper boards, endpapers renewed, light rubbing. A bit toned, but very good. Marginal notes in an early hand on a few leaves. First Edition of one of the earliest works devoted specifically to opium and its medical properties, a field of study that began in the second decade of the 17th century with the publication of Sala's Opiologie (1614). Wedel obtained his medical degree from the University of Jena and taught there for many years, serving as a professor of anatomy, surgery, botany, chemistry and medical theory. He was a devotee of Paracelsus's doctrine of iatrochemistry, which sought to understand medicine and physiology on the basis of chemical processes and encouraged its practitioners to conduct experiments for the purpose of producing effective drugs for the treatment of disease. "These concepts emerge clearly in Wedel's treatise on opium, a substance that offered the ideal occasion for experimentation, since various derivatives of its active ingredients could be obtained by chemical manipulation . . . He begins by observing that opium-the juice contained in the capsule of the poppy ('succus excapitum papaveris thyrisis seu scapibus vulnerates,' p. 10)-was an extraordinarily potent 'simple' whose effects had already been described by the classical and Arab authorities, whom he cites extensively. A discussion of the 'temperament' of opium and wheth … [Click Below for Full Description]

REYNELL, Carew.
London: for Giles Widdowes, 1674. London: for Giles Widdowes,, 1674. Small octavo (165 x 103 mm). Contemporary sheep, rebacked in polished calf, triple blind-rule border to covers, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt, later endpapers, preserving earlier endpaper at rear. Complete with initial imprimatur and terminal advertisement leaves. Rubbed, endpapers split at hinges, some light browning, pp. 31/32 with spillburn affecting one letter on each page with new letter supplied, last few binder's blanks a little soiled and stained, very minor ink notation to rear endpapers and pastedown. A very good copy. First edition of this "concise and well-argued survey of the British economy from the protectionist and mercantile point of view, which stressed both London and population growth as dynamics for change and prosperity and which gained notice in the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions for 27 April 1674" (ODNB). Reynell (1636-1690) seems to have hoped the work would gain him public office, perhaps in the embryonic Board of Trade, but he remained an out-of-office Tory for the rest of his life. Even so, his writings were influential in the protectionist cause. With the bookplate dated 1702 of Sir John Percivale, Baronet of Burton in County Cork Ireland, to the title page verso; also with the late 19th/early 20th century bookplate of the Castle Freke library in County Cork to the front pastedown. 1674.

BACON, FRANCIS
London: Printed for Thomas Williams, 1674. First issued in 1605, enlarged over the next 35 years, translated into Latin and then back to English, this is a landmark work in the history of empirical philosophy and the organization of knowledge. It comprises nine books, the first addressing the importance of, and impediments to, acquiring knowledge. The second book divides all knowledge into three branches, and suggests an inductive method for obtaining new knowledge. Each successive book takes a subdivision from a preceding book, addresses the specific flaws of each discipline's practitioners, and leaves one branch to be followed in the subsequent book. The ninth book picks up the branch not followed from the first book (divine inspiration). As Day notes, "Factual knowledge by accurate observation and experimentation is his goal . . . [Bacon's] primary task is to free the scientific mind from religious interference and dogma." PMM says that Bacon's "insistence on making science experimental and factual, rather than speculative and philosophical, had powerful consequences. . . . [his] influence on Locke and through him on subsequent English schools of psychology and ethics was profound." Our translation by the clergyman Wats (d. 1657) was the signal achievement in a life that included study at Lincoln College, Oxford, and a position as rector of Willingale Doe from 1642-47.. 300 x 195 mm. Redi Francesco,
Dorso a tre nervi.
Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary", bound with an extensive manuscript pharmacopoeia containing hundreds of medicinal recipes. The manuscript is in several hands, but one appears to match Johan Schröder's 1674 owner's inscription in the Gogler, which notes that he is a surgeon, so he is probably at least in part the author/compiler. We do not know whether the author is related to Johann Schroeder (1600-1664), born in Westfalen, author of Phamacopoeia medico-chymica sive thesarus pharmacologicus (Ulm, 1641). Little is known about Carl de Gogler. His book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). The first edition, in folio format, was extensively revised for the present second edition and the illustrated engraved title-page added. With Schröders owner's inscription on the back of the engraved title-page. The Gogler lacks leaf L5 (pp. 169 & 170). With leaf 2[pi]1 of the manuscript detached, minor marginal damage to the printed title-page repaired and occasional minor stains, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is rubbed and dirty, with some cracks in the backstrip. A remarkable primary source for medicinal practices among the common people of Westfalen ca. 1674.

LEEUWENSON, Joannes (Pieter Arend LEUPE, ed. & intro.).
, . . The manuscript itself is titled "Daghregister van de Landreijs, gedaeen bij mij Joannes Leeuwenson..." Although described as an journey over land, parts naturally had to be made by sea as well, and Leeuwenson names numerous ships in the various Dutch fleets, as well as the enemy ships they encountered. An important early journal of an overland voyage through India, Iran and the Middle East.
