RAY, JOHN
H. Bruges for Tho. Burrell, London, 1674. First edition of the first book on English dialects, and the first English dialect dictionary; 12mo, pp. [14], [1]-178 (i.e. 148); blank leaves A1 and L4 are not preserved; title page printed in red and black; bottom margin trimmed close touching the date in the imprint; modern marbled wrappers. While on his botanical journeys throughout England, which brought Ray (1627-1705) everlasting fame, he had the opportunity to study local antiquities and customs, as well as local dialects. This work, together with his Collection of English Proverbs (1670), is an outgrowth of these travels. On one of his treks into Cornwall he made notes on the smelting industry, and recorded his observations (included in a separate section at the back of this volume) on the smelting and refining of silver, tin and iron. Also included is a brief section on husbandry. The sections on the names of British birds and fishes were largely the work of Francis Willughby. An expanded and much more common edition appeared in 1691. Keynes 23 ("one of his more important publications"); Alston IX, 1; Kennedy 10623; Wing R-388. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Pico della Mirandola, Giovanni Francesco.
Sumptibus Ludovici Billaine, 1674. Authoritative edition of Savonarola's biography first printed in the 1530's, the volume in hand containing both the entire "life" and the famous compendium of his revelations. Count Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (1469-1533, not to be confused with his uncle Giovanni, the famous philosopher, 1463-94) knew Savonarola personally, and witnessed his martyrdom in 1498. After years of writing and revising, and reviews by friends who also knew Savonarola, his biography was finally finished in 1530 and later translated anonymously into Italian. The present edition is in Latin and was edited by Jacques Quétif (1618-98), a Dominican priest working chez Louis Billaine in Paris -- France of the Ancien Régime regarding Savonarola as an authentic spiritual leader and not "just" the vexatious Dominican priest who antagonized Alexander VI, spoke out against humanism, and was excommunicated and executed for heresy. The text is printed in roman and italic with side- and shouldernotes, and decorated with a few woodcut initials, headpieces and tail ornaments, with a separate section title for the Compendium revelationum, introduced with a preface by Florentine poet Girolamo Benivieni (1453-1542). A colophon at the end of the Lamentatio sponsae Christi (final leaf) is dated 1537 for the Venetian edition by Tridino. In addition to a finely engraved frontispiece portrait of Savonarola, there are => eight plates, numbering four engraved coats of arms, for the Atestina, Medici, Borgia and Sforza families, and => four large foldout letterpress fam … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHALES, John
London 2nd December 1674 - Folio, single page written in Secretary hand but signed by Shales, addressed, docketed, some dustiness, has been folded for delivery, evidence of seal wax. In 1673, towards the end of the Third Anglo Dutch war, the English Navy was £1000,000 in debt; ships were worn out, compliment of serving men at its lowest for years, and fraud was rife. Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby and First Minister, requested in March 1674 information on the Navy's financial condition. John Shales, recently appointed \inspector of Excise Revenue and previously Victualling Agent to the Navy at Portsmouth, writes that although partial information has become available he is as yet unable to file a complete report for lack of further data. He concludes by referring to a consultation between Danby and Samuel Pepys, who was at that time conducting his important strategic review of naval refurbishments and systemic abuses - "The Charge of the Navy continues its progression to a degree far beyond the Establishment which your Loxx (Lordships) has design'd to consult Mr Pepys." Thiers, Johannis Baptist (Jean-Baptiste)
Du Puis, Paris, 1674. Leather is scuffed, corners bumped with boards showing, chipping along edges of spine, interior toned and slightly musty, but binding is tight. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown from a Jesuit library and a name in very small letters on the ffep. There is some darkening along the edges of the pastedowns. Not a bad copy of this fairy well known (at least in ecclesiastical circles! ) book. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 391 pages; Jean-Baptiste Thiers (1636-1703) was a French priest in the diocese of Chartres who was obsessively opposed to archdiaconal privilege. This is a 391 page treatise written to justify the wearing of the stole by a cure' during an archdiaconal visitation. Thiers other works include such topics as a history of wig-wearing, the function of church bells, and siuperstitions connected with the sacraments. The book is written in Latin. An excellent reference is an article in Church History, March 2008 by Paul Scott, Vested Struggles: The Social and Ecclesiological Significance of Stoles in Seventeenth-Century France. Woodcut printer's device on title. 176 pp.; 86 pp., 1 blank leaf; 60 pp.; 200 pp. 2 blank leaves; 120 pp.; 24 pp.; 103 pp. Seven parts bound in one vol. 12mo, cont. fine smooth vellum over boards. Amsterdam: D. Elzevier, 1674. A fine copy of by far the most important bookseller's catalogue of the 17th century, listing on 736 pages upwards of 20,000 titles. "It is divided into seven parts: theology, law, medicine, books on 'miscellaneous' subjects, books in French, in Italian, Spanish and English, and in German. No prices were given but these were presumably quoted on request. Included are, of course, the books published by the Elzeviers still in print, and a vast number of other books printed in Holland, and the catalogue is therefore still of bibliographical value. It also served contemporary scholars as a work of reference and may be considered a select universal bibliography."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 68. Fine copy. ❧ Pollard & Ehrman no. 69. .

Arnauld, Antoine ; Antonio Arnaldo
Lovanii [Löwen] Typus Adriani de Witte, sub signo Pavonis 1674. ... tum maxime Pastoribus & sacerdotibus animarum salutis studiosis. [Click Below for Full Description]
