SHALES, John
London 2nd December 1674 - Folio, single page written in Secretary hand but signed by Shales, addressed, docketed, some dustiness, has been folded for delivery, evidence of seal wax. In 1673, towards the end of the Third Anglo Dutch war, the English Navy was £1000,000 in debt; ships were worn out, compliment of serving men at its lowest for years, and fraud was rife. Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby and First Minister, requested in March 1674 information on the Navy's financial condition. John Shales, recently appointed \inspector of Excise Revenue and previously Victualling Agent to the Navy at Portsmouth, writes that although partial information has become available he is as yet unable to file a complete report for lack of further data. He concludes by referring to a consultation between Danby and Samuel Pepys, who was at that time conducting his important strategic review of naval refurbishments and systemic abuses - "The Charge of the Navy continues its progression to a degree far beyond the Establishment which your Loxx (Lordships) has design'd to consult Mr Pepys." LACHMUND, F.
- Amsterdam, A. Frisius, 1674. 12mo (130 x 75mm). pp. 52, (6), with 5 (4 folded) engraved plates. Recent boards. First edition and a very scarce publication on the Albatross and one of the earliest illustrated monographs of a single bird, 'among the greatest rarities in ornithological literature' (E.P. Goldschmidt). In the name 'Diomedea' is a reference to the mythical metamorphosis of the companions of the Greek warrior Diomedes into birds. The Albatross was part of Lachmund's own natural history cabinet at Hildesheim. The work is dedicated to Johan Daniel Major, professor of anatomy at Kiel. The first plate (210 x 175 mm) shows a full depiction of the Albatross, an other plate shows its large and strong beak, while the remaining plates show anatomical details. Not in any of the major ornithological bibliographies; The British Museum Natural History catalogue lists it as 'wanting'.Eales 804, quoting an edition of 1686; Wellcome III, 426; Ripley & Scribner, 'Ornithological books in the Yale Univ. Thiers, Johannis Baptist (Jean-Baptiste)
Du Puis, Paris, 1674. Leather is scuffed, corners bumped with boards showing, chipping along edges of spine, interior toned and slightly musty, but binding is tight. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown from a Jesuit library and a name in very small letters on the ffep. There is some darkening along the edges of the pastedowns. Not a bad copy of this fairy well known (at least in ecclesiastical circles! ) book. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 391 pages; Jean-Baptiste Thiers (1636-1703) was a French priest in the diocese of Chartres who was obsessively opposed to archdiaconal privilege. This is a 391 page treatise written to justify the wearing of the stole by a cure' during an archdiaconal visitation. Thiers other works include such topics as a history of wig-wearing, the function of church bells, and siuperstitions connected with the sacraments. The book is written in Latin. An excellent reference is an article in Church History, March 2008 by Paul Scott, Vested Struggles: The Social and Ecclesiological Significance of Stoles in Seventeenth-Century France. Woodcut printer's device on title. 176 pp.; 86 pp., 1 blank leaf; 60 pp.; 200 pp. 2 blank leaves; 120 pp.; 24 pp.; 103 pp. Seven parts bound in one vol. 12mo, cont. fine smooth vellum over boards. Amsterdam: D. Elzevier, 1674. A fine copy of by far the most important bookseller's catalogue of the 17th century, listing on 736 pages upwards of 20,000 titles. "It is divided into seven parts: theology, law, medicine, books on 'miscellaneous' subjects, books in French, in Italian, Spanish and English, and in German. No prices were given but these were presumably quoted on request. Included are, of course, the books published by the Elzeviers still in print, and a vast number of other books printed in Holland, and the catalogue is therefore still of bibliographical value. It also served contemporary scholars as a work of reference and may be considered a select universal bibliography."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 68. Fine copy. ❧ Pollard & Ehrman no. 69. .

Arnauld, Antoine ; Antonio Arnaldo
Lovanii [Löwen] Typus Adriani de Witte, sub signo Pavonis 1674. ... tum maxime Pastoribus & sacerdotibus animarum salutis studiosis. [Click Below for Full Description]

1674. Legal Foundations of the War of Devolution La Feuillade, Georges d'Aubusson de [1612-1697]. La Defense du Droit de Marie Therese d'Austriche, Reine de France a la Succession des Couronnes d'Espagne. Paris: Chez Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1674. [xxiv], 164, [1] pp. 12mo. (5-1/2" x 3"). Contemporary sheep treated to resemble tree-calf, gilt spine with raised bands, speckled edges. Some rubbing to extremities with minor wear to spine ends, corners bumped. Toning to text, faint dampstaining and spotting to a few leaves, internally clean. * First edition. The author was the Archbishop of Embrun, later Prince-Archbishop of Metz. Mazarin appointed him ambassador to Venice in 1659. Louis XIV appointed him ambassador to Spain in 1667 to pursue French claims to the Spanish Netherlands in the name of Maria Theresa of Austria (1638-1683), the Spanish Infanta and Queen Consort of Louis XIV. These claims were tenuous and constructed on intricate legal foundations. French jurists argued that the Spanish Netherlands should not go to the still underage heir to the Spanish throne, Charles II of Spain (1661-1700), because he was the issue of the second marriage of Philip IV. Maria Theresa on the other hand was a result of his first marriage and the lands thereby 'devolved' to her and, of course, Louis XIV. France's claims led to the War of devolution (1667-68). Feuillade defends France's claims with an argument grounded in the "fundamental laws of Spain, the examples of past centuries and the solemn judgments of the Royal Council of Castile." A second edition … [Click Below for Full Description]

BREREWOOD, EDWARD
London: printed for Samuel Mearne, John Martyn, and Henry Herringman, 1674. Fourth edition, the first in octavo; 8vo, pp. [32], 252, [3]; full contemporary calf, sprinkled edges; extremities worn, spine with a few chips out, but in all a good, sound copy. "The earliest book to suggest the now accepted theory of the Asiatic origin of the American aborigine." It went through four editions in England 1614-1674, and six others on the continent. "The author devotes a portion of the book to the first peopling of America, claiming the Tartars as their forefathers. His account of religion in America is very curious, especially the part where he describes an old priest who baptized 700,000! Chapter XXII relates to the idolatries practiced in America" (Sabin). Alston III, 764; Sabin 7732, citing the 1635 edition; Wing B4378.

Boileau Despréaux, Nicolas.
Claude Barbin (pr. by Denys Thierry), 1674. Early edition, following the first of 1670; this is the first edition to appear under the Oeuvres title, and contains nine satires, the first four epistles, L'art poëtique, and a number of other shorter pieces, followed by the Traité du sublime ou du merveilleux dans le discours, translated from Longinus. The handsomely printed volume has much of its text set in italic type, decorated with woodcut tailpieces, typographic and woodcut headpieces, and ornamental capitals. Margins are generous, layout is attractive. P. Landry designed and engraved the classically themed frontispiece, with the plate preceding Le Lutrin having been done by F. Chausseau. Binding: 19th-century signed binding by Léon Gruel: Oxblood morocco framed in gilt double fillets containing a background of gilt-stamped fleurs-de-lis around a central ornamented cartouche. Spine gilt extra, with elaborate gilt-stamped inner dentelles over silk endpapers. All edges gilt over marbling. => Silk bookmarker woven with binder's information! Provenance: Front fly-leaf with armorial bookplate of New York attorney and book collector Frederic Robert Halsey, and with decorative medieval-inspired bookplate of "G.E." Volume with laid-in handwritten note signed by Gruel, on Gruel-Engelmann letterhead, dated 1892.

(Allestree, Richard)
Oxford at the Theatre in Oxford, 1674. Sm. 4to., black turkey morocco tooled in gilt in an all-over design with drawer-handle tools, curls and flower head tools; decorated with silver paint. The spine is divided into six compartments by five raised bands, which are also tooled in gilt (echoing the covers), with silver paint. The title is gilt lettered in the second compartment from the top. One corner and the very head of the rear joint have been skillfully repaired. Marbled endleaves. The binding is the work of the Queen's Binder A and appears to be a twin of a copy of the same title (but the later, 1675, printing), given to the British Library as part of the Henry David gift [See: No 118]. Hobson and Nixon have had much to say about the forty years following the Restoration of King Charles II to his throne in 1660, which has been called THE GOLDEN AGE OF ENGLISH BOOKBINDING. Nixon points out that there were at least four Queen's binders; viz., A, B, C and D, who all started work in 1670, and all made use of the recently introduced drawer-handle tools and volutes with pointellé outlines rather than floral volutes much used by the other binders of the period. This is a FINE EXAMPLE on a most fitting book. Allestree was a man of extensive learning, of moderate views and a fine preacher. He was generous and charitable, of “a solid and masculine kindness,” and of a temper hot, but completely under control [Encyclopædia Britannica 11th ed.]. A FINE RESTORATION BINDING BY THE QUEEN'S BINDER A
