Charleton, Walter
[London]: Printed by T.N. for James Magnes, 1674. First Edition. This is one of the earliest books in English explicitly dealing with the emotions. Charleton (1619-1707) was a founding member of the Royal Society of London and a President of the Royal College of Surgeons. In this work he divides the soul into rational and sensitive parts, and devotes the book to an analysis of the second, corporeal aspect of human nature. Bound in unsympathetic modern dark red-brown calf with red leather spine label gilt. A very good copy with occasional ink scoring and marginal tick marks, prior owner’s name inked atop title page, early owner signature to endpaper, margins lightly smudged. Pages are mostly bright with occasional spots. 188pp.

Pico della Mirandola, Giovanni Francesco
Paris: Sumptibus Ludovici Billaine, 1674. 12mo (15 cm, 5.9"). Vol. I of II. Frontis., [18] ff., 385 [i.e., 375], [1] pp. Plates. Authoritative edition of Savonarola's biography first printed in the 1530's, the volume in hand containing both the entire "life" and the famous compendium of his revelations. Count Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (1469–1533, not to be confused with his uncle Giovanni, the famous philosopher, 1463–94) knew Savonarola personally, and witnessed his martyrdom in 1498. After years of writing and revising, and reviews by friends who also knew Savonarola, his biography was finally finished in 1530 and later translated anonymously into Italian. The present edition is in Latin and was edited by Jacques Quétif (1618–98), a Dominican priest working chez Louis Billaine in Paris — France of the Ancien Régime regarding Savonarola as an authentic spiritual leader and not "just" the vexatious Dominican priest who antagonized Alexander VI, spoke out against humanism, and was excommunicated and executed for heresy. The text is printed in roman and italic with side- and shouldernotes, and decorated with a few woodcut initials, headpieces and tail ornaments, with a separate section title for the Compendium revelationum, introduced with a preface by Florentine poet Girolamo Benivieni (1453–1542). A colophon at the end of the Lamentatio sponsae Christi (final leaf) is dated 1537 for the Venetian edition by Tridino. In addition to a finely engraved frontispiece portrait of Savonarola, there are => eight plates, numbering four en … [Click Below for Full Description]

[32], 1346 pp. Half title, title printed in red and black, engraved frontispiece by G. Audran. A crisp unfoxed copy of the first edition and of greatest rarity. Only two copies listed in KVK (one in Zurich and another in Paris BnF), no copy in the USA. ---- Brunet III, 1901; Zischka 7; Carter/Muir, Printing and the Mind of Man 155a - FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST MODERN ENCYCLOPEDIA. Moreri's work is ranked, along with Bayle's Dictionnaire Historique et Critique, as one of the first vernacular encyclopedias to make an impact on the European world of letters. Moreri deliberately designed his encyclopedia as an apologia and defence of the Roman Catholic Church. It is also noteworthy for its emphasis on biographical and historical entries which for a long time were neglected by other compilers such as Harris, Chambers and Bayle (whose own Dictionnaire was composed as a direct response to Moreri's work). It was eclipsed by Diderot's Encyclopedie (Paris, 1751-65)..

Ne citiamo alcuni: Lorenzo Bellini,Gustus organum>br>Christiano Hugenio, Horologium OscillatorioAnonimi, Euclidis elementa geometricaBernardino Genga, Anatomia chirurgica?

Pico della Mirandola, Giovanni Francesco.
Sumptibus Ludovici Billaine, 1674. Authoritative edition of Savonarola's biography first printed in the 1530's, the volume in hand containing both the entire "life" and the famous compendium of his revelations. Count Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (1469-1533, not to be confused with his uncle Giovanni, the famous philosopher, 1463-94) knew Savonarola personally, and witnessed his martyrdom in 1498. After years of writing and revising, and reviews by friends who also knew Savonarola, his biography was finally finished in 1530 and later translated anonymously into Italian. The present edition is in Latin and was edited by Jacques Quétif (1618-98), a Dominican priest working chez Louis Billaine in Paris -- France of the Ancien Régime regarding Savonarola as an authentic spiritual leader and not "just" the vexatious Dominican priest who antagonized Alexander VI, spoke out against humanism, and was excommunicated and executed for heresy. The text is printed in roman and italic with side- and shouldernotes, and decorated with a few woodcut initials, headpieces and tail ornaments, with a separate section title for the Compendium revelationum, introduced with a preface by Florentine poet Girolamo Benivieni (1453-1542). A colophon at the end of the Lamentatio sponsae Christi (final leaf) is dated 1537 for the Venetian edition by Tridino. In addition to a finely engraved frontispiece portrait of Savonarola, there are => eight plates, numbering four engraved coats of arms, for the Atestina, Medici, Borgia and Sforza families, and => four large foldout letterpress fam … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dubois, Sieur
First edition of this account on Madagascar, Bourbon & the Mascarenne Islands, of remarkable rarity. 1674. Paris. Claude Barbin. In 12mo (145 mm x 83 mm). 1 [blank] + 6 ff. + 234 + 5 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands to spine, ruled and lettered in gilt, chipped at head, upper joint torn. Small hole in two leaves, minor toning, generally fine. First edition; a rare account of travel Mascarene Islands. Dubois sailed to Madagascar towards the end of a period which saw the establishment of several French settlements in the south of the island. However, ´it is not in connection with Madagascar that the exceptional interest of the Sieur Dubois´ little book is to be found. Of the great island, indeed, he saw little enough during the months when he lay prostrated and paralysed by the effects of malarial fever... it is rather in his account o the remarkable fauna of the Isle Mascarenne [Réunion], wither he was transpoter in order to regain his health, that the real value to science of his testimony is to be obtained by naturalist, desirous of investigating the geographical distribution of animals in this quarter of the world´ (The voyages made by the Sieur D. B. to the Islands Dauphine or Madagascar and Bourbon or Mascarenne in the years 1669, 70, 71 and 72, Hakluyt Society, 1891, xxii). This work is an important witness to several islands species, including the Réunion rail (also known as Dubois´s wood rail), a now-extinct flightless bird; in fact, his appears to be the only historical reference about it, so it might be possible that it became extinct in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEPLER, Johannes.
An exceptional copy, in the original publisher's interim boards, of the first printing of Kepler's scientific correspondence, edited by Michael Gottlieb Hansch, which also contains the first biography of Kepler. "The thousands of MS sheets left at Kepler's death went to his son Ludwig, who promised publication but lacked both the time and the scientific knowledge for the undertaking. After Ludwig's death the Danzig astronomer Johannes Hevelius acquired the collection and published a brief inventory in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1674. In 1707 Michael Gottlieb Hansch obtained the material with the intention of publishing it, and in 1718 he produced [with the assistance of Leibniz, ref. Caspar: Kepler, p.366] 'Joannis Kepleri aliorumque epistolae mutuae', a large folio vol. containing 77 letters by Kepler and 407 to him." (D.S.B. vol. VII, p.309). Among those with whom Kepler corresponded were Tycho Brahe, Galileo, Scheiner, Bayer, Scaliger, Harriot, etc. Many of the letters are lengthy scientific treatises. The work is divided into the following parts: an introduction to the history of mathematics and astronomy leading up to Kepler's time; "the earliest presentation of Kepler's life" (Caspar: Kepler, p.13); an index to the 16th and 17th century scientists mentioned in the letters; and an extensive bibliography of Kepler's writings; and the letters. (Brewster: The Martyrs of Science, pp. 252-254:) Kepler "left behind him twenty-two volumes of manuscripts, seven of which contain his epistolary correspondence.
