LAMZWEERDE, Jan Baptist van
Amsterdam, Joannis a Someren.

Paris: Sumptibus Ludovici Billaine, 1674. 12mo (15 cm, 5.9"). Vol. I of II. Frontis., [18] ff., 385 [i.e., 375], [1] pp. Plates. Authoritative edition of Savonarola's biography first printed in the 1530's, the volume in hand containing both the entire "life" and the famous compendium of his revelations. Count Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (1469–1533, not to be confused with his uncle Giovanni, the famous philosopher, 1463–94) knew Savonarola personally, and witnessed his martyrdom in 1498. After years of writing and revising, and reviews by friends who also knew Savonarola, his biography was finally finished in 1530 and later translated anonymously into Italian. The present edition is in Latin and was edited by Jacques Quétif (1618–98), a Dominican priest working chez Louis Billaine in Paris — France of the Ancien Régime regarding Savonarola as an authentic spiritual leader and not "just" the vexatious Dominican priest who antagonized Alexander VI, spoke out against humanism, and was excommunicated and executed for heresy.    The text is printed in roman and italic with side- and shouldernotes, and decorated with a few woodcut initials, headpieces and tail ornaments, with a separate section title for the Compendium revelationum, introduced with a preface by Florentine poet Girolamo Benivieni (1453–1542). A colophon at the end of the Lamentatio sponsae Christi (final leaf) is dated 1537 for the Venetian edition by Tridino.    In addition to a finely engraved frontispiece portrait of Savonarola, there are => eight plates, numbering four engraved coats of arms, for t … [Click Below for Full Description]

EGANE, Anthony
London: Printed for Benjamin Southwood, 1674. Second edition. Small quarto. [8], 22pp [i.e. 25pp], [7]. Later paper wraps, a little chipped. From the Mendham Collection, with pencilled shelfmarks, a few short notes in Joseph Mendham's hand, and the bookplate of the Law Society to FEP. Ink inscription of John Bridges to verso of final blank. Occasional shaving/loss to pagination of column headings, paper flaw to C4, without loss of sense. Extraordinary catalogue of the costs to receive Pardons for a wide variety of sins, a.k.a. "Merchandise at the Popish Market." The most contemporaneously horrifying sins are censored in our copy, namely on p. 5, removing reference to the loss of "stones" or "privy members" amongst the clergy (GBP 50 and 112 respectively). On p. 13 are censored 3 references to "Buggery" for which the Indulgence Rate is GBP 90 (sic). And yet the Indulgence Rate for a parent who murders their own child is only GBP 4. If both parents strangle the child together the Indulgence Rate increases to GBP 6. But if a stranger murders an infant he/she pays only 3, i.e. less than it costs for the pardon of a woman who miscarries (4). The Indulgence Rate for a priest who conducts carnal relations with a woman of any sort is GBP 36, the same rate for a nun "having played the whore." Costs of Papal dispensation for Jews are considerable: GBP 300 for a Jew having a Synagogue in his own house; 600 for erecting a new public Synagogue; and 60 for a Jew who practices "Physick or Chyrurgery." The author is described as the "late Confessor-General of the Kingdome of Ireland, … [Click Below for Full Description]

BATTLE OF SENEFFE.
Amsterdam, Marcus Doornick, 1674.Broadside with large engraving with on the left side Charleroy and on the right side Mariomont and below letterpress in three columns. Ca. 49 x 37,5 cm.The Battle of Seneffe was fought on 11 August 1674 between the French army under the command of Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé and the Dutch-German-Spanish army under William III of Orange. During the Franco-Dutch war, William III commanded a Dutch-German-Spanish army through the southern Netherlands into the territory of Northern France. France defended this area with an army under Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé. For five weeks the two armies manoeuvred without getting into combat with each other. On the 10th of August, William III decided to head for Paris in order to force the enemy into fighting.Condé sent a detachment of about 500 horsemen to keep the Dutch vanguard busy near the village of Seneffe, blocking the advance of William. In the meantime, Condé tried to surround the 60,000 allied troops with the 45,000 men at his disposal. The horsemen managed to keep the Dutch vanguard busy, but the envelopment of the main allied force failed. After ten hours Condé had 8,000 dead or wounded and William - 11,000, with the allied troops retreating from the battlefield. - (Some small marginal repairs). - FineMuller, Historieplaten, 2554; Atlas van Stolk 2599.

SIDNEY, Sir Philip
London: Printed for George Calvert, at the Golden-Ball in Little-Britain, 1674. The Thirteenth Edition. Half Leather. Good. With his Life and Death [signed: ?????????????]; a brief table of the principal Heads, and some other new additions. Newly bound in a luxurious three quarters green Nigerian goatskin morocco, pale brown cloth, five raised bands, gilt title and date to spine, gilt rules to compartments and corners, page edges stained yellow, possibly contemporary. No portrait frontis. One of the transcendent literary masterpieces of the English Renaissance, this edition - one of several published around the period - also contains 'Certain Sonnets Never before Printed', Sidney's esteemed 'The Defence of Poesie', an influential and pioneering essay of literary criticism, and the poem 'Astrophel and Stella.' A preface of a letter by Sidney to his sister the Countess of Pembroke is followed by 'The Life and Death of Sir Philip Sidney'. Also some 30 Latin epigrams in honour of Sidney, who died in Holland in 1586 of his wounds from the battle of Zutphen. Browning and mottling to pages, the odd scattered mark, a small dampstain to upper corner affecting some pages to rear - nothing serious - and internally overall a decent, clean copy. Margins occasionally uneven, which appears to be more a printing issue than any uneven trimming, but no loss of text. Sm. folio. (30.5cm x 21cm) tp, A2, b-d2, B-Z3, Aa-Zz3, Aaa-Iii3. [32], 624, [26]. pp. 576 is followed by 541-564 and then by pp. 601-614 but the content on these pages is in order.
