The ceiling and wall frescos were commissioned by Ranuccio Farnese and executed between 1597 and 1608 by Annibale Carracci, assisted by his brother Agostino and the artists Domenichino and Lanfranco. Carracci structured his "Love of the Gods" paintings for the Galleria Farnese after the Raphael's Loggia de Psyche and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Carracci's finished cycle for the Farnese Palace represented a pivotal change in painting, a style that moved away from the High Renaissance and anticipated the new Baroque style, which would dominate Italian painting well into the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Contents: A double-spread title-page printed in sepia, double-page engraved memorial portrait of Carracci atop ornamental tomb printed in sepia cut by Pietro Aquila, after t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

The microscope revealed in insects an organization as marvelous as it was unsuspected. Redi prepared and observed the egg-producing apparatus in insects, and he also used the microscope to good advantage in observing the morphological elements characteristic of the eggs of each species" (DSB XI, p. 341).//D. PECOUR, Louis 1653-1729
. Pecour is depicted seated at a table with an open book of dances in Feuillet notation. 417 x 294 mm. Slightly worn and soiled; minor creasing to area with letters below image; trimmed to plate mark.. Credited with 120 original choreographies, most for the theatre but many for social dancing, "[Pecour] was one of the finest dancers working under the celebrated royal choreographer Pierre Beauchamp. He is said in one source to have made his debut as a dancer in a repeat performance of Lully's Cadmus et Hermione in 1674. When, on Lully's death in 1687, Beauchamp left the Opera, Pecour was appointed in his place. He gave up dancing in about 1703 but he held the post of ballet-master and choreographer at the Opera until his death. His tutelage produced such outstanding dancers as La Fontaine, Subligny, Guiot, Prevost and Menese among the women and Blondy, Ballon, Dumoulin and Marcel among the men. He is credited with changing the 'S' figure of the Minuet to a 'Z', an innovation that helped keep the dancers in a proper relationship to each other and to the figure." LIGON, RIchard.
Paris, 1674. 390 x 550mm. Trimmed close to printed border lower right for binding, as issued, minor staining. An early map of the English settlements in Barbados, marking the owners of the plantations. Richard Ligon (1585?-1662) lost his fortune in the upheavals of the English Civil War, finding himself a 'stranger in my own country'. He decided to leave for Barbados in 1647 but, having contracted a fever, returned to England in 1650, where his creditors had him imprisoned for debt. He started work on an account of his time in the West Indies, which was published as 'A True and Exact History of the Island of Barbadoes' in 1657. A second edition followed in 1673, with this French edition the following year where this rare map was issued.

It warns the king to restrict his support through a clever reading of the Act of Supremacy. Issued by King Henry VIII in 1534, it declared the king to be the "supreme head on earth of the Church in England" in place of the pope. T … [Click Below for Full Description]
