1674. VERY Nice. See Description Below. After a 13 year hiatus, The Compleat Surveyor has reopened for business (www.compleatsurveyor.com). Offered Here: Leybourn, William, The Compleat Surveyor: Containing The whole Art of Surveying of Land, by the Plain Table, Theodolite, Circumferentor, and Peractor. (London, 1674), Third Edition. The Compleat Surveyor was a major work of the period with five editions from 1653 thru 1722. Each edition of the book was larger in content and substance and brought the work to a standard that exceeded most others of the time. George Washington apparently focused on Leybourn's Compleat Surveyor as a young man studying the art of surveying. Details about the book: [20], 1-107, then 429 pages plus a portrait frontispiece and five folding plates; bound in contemporary calf with marbled endpapers re-backed in recent calf with gilt decoration and a black morocco spine label." The main text is complete, very nicely printed within printed borders and with margins. As with all copies of this edition, the pagination is irregular, jumping at the end of the third book, between page [108] and page [183], at which the fourth book begins. The plates, like the text pages, are clean and crisp but with one plate dusty at the fore edge. The pages before the main text, however, leave a bit to be desired. The central engraved portrait of the frontispiece has been laid onto a contemporary leaf, as has the area of the title page within its printed border. There has been some damage to the title page printing with four or five words rubbed from the sub-title. Furth … [Click Below for Full Description]

Overall, an attractive copy of the second edition of this seminal poem, in a beautiful binding. Wing M2144, Shawcross 318, ESTC R13351. Paradise Lost is a blank-verse poem that relates the story of Adam and Eve's expulsion from the idyllic Garden of Eden. Originally published in ten books, Milton revised the first edition by breaking two longer chapters in half, creating a total of twelve books. Like Virgil's Aeneid, Paradise Lost is half the length of both of Homer's epics. Milton began composing Paradise Lost after he had gone completely blind; he memorized his verses and orated them to friends and family for inscription. London: by J[ames]. C[otrell]. for Thomas Basset, 1674. Octavo (4-1/4" x 6-3/4") bound in 3/4 brown morocco leather and brown boards with a gilt-stamped spine; [1], 250 pages. Engraving on verso of title page; lacking the 12-page preface. Wing M75. An appendix was included in the Second Edition published in 1677 though retaining the 1674 date on the title page. The online ENCYCLOPÆDIA BRITANNICA gives the background on Manley's subject matter: "False Dmitry, also called Pseudo-demetrius, Russian Lzhedmitry, or Dmitry Samozvanets, any of three different pretenders to the Muscovite throne who, during the Time of Troubles (1598-1613), claimed to be Dmitry Ivanovich, the son of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible (reigned 1533-1584) who had died mysteriously in 1591 while still a child." Leo Loewenson in THE SLAVONIC AND EAST EUROPEAN REVIEW states, "THE RUSSIAN IMPOSTOR is of course not a primary historical source in the sense in which such a classification is applicable to reports by foreign travellers. It is obviously a secondary work, i.e. the result of research. Not even the geographical description of Russia, with which the historical narrative is introduced, contains the slightest reason to assume that Manley had ever visited the country. Moreover apart from inconclusive remarks like that about the uncertainty still prevailing in Russia with regard to the identity of the Impostor there is also nothing to suggest that any information was derived from hearsay, But the lack of any value as a primary source does not deprive the work of great historiographical interest The fact that it … [Click Below for Full Description]
