BOYLE, Robert (1627-1691)
printed by E. Flesher for R. Davis : 1674 : London : 8vo: A4 (-A1) B-N8, 99 of 100 leaves, pp. [6] 51 [3] 6 [2] 5 [3] 11 [3] 39 [3] 5 [3] 11 [3] 27 [3] 14, without the blank A1. : A work consisting of 10 tracts describing Boyle's work in thermodynamics, the desalination of sea water, and experiments with a new hygrometer. The first four tracts are sequels to his Experimental history of cold (1665); they describe experiments on the expansive force of freezing water and various freezing mixtures measured with spirit thermometers. The next tract is the one from which the volume takes its title, 'Observations and experiments about the saltness of the sea.' Boyle was very interested in the practical problems of desalination and much of this tract describes experiments to discover a practical method which could be used at sea. As a result of this piece Boyle became involved in a long correspondence, some of which was printed in Fitzgerald's Saltwater sweetened (1683). The next tract is 'Relations about the bottom of the sea,' followed by 'Of the natural and preternatural state of bodies'. The three final tracts describe experiments and observations made with Boyle's hygrometer. This used a sponge suspended from one arm of a balance, an arrangement he preferred to the more common hygrometers pioneered by the Accademia del Cimento, which relied on the expansion and contraction of vegetable or animal fibres. Boyle says that the problem with such hygrometers, using lute strings or oat beards, is that after a while their contractile power is altered or impaired (see Daumas p. 60).Typ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nicolas BOILEAU DESPREAUX
First edition of Boileau and works with the term containing 9 satires, epistles 4, the first four songs of the lectern and the Treaty of the sublime. The edition also contains a new foreword and a new preface. Beautiful print in italics. There exists an edition of parts dating from 1670 which Boileau Boileau speaks without mentioning the date, but that seems not found; Brunet cites the comment, without giving a date. Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves Jansenist. Piece black title. Rubbed together. 2 corners bumped. He misses the second sheet completing the privilege (last lines indicating the date). The two frontispieces are also missing, one must appear before the title, the other before the lectern. Title page with dirt. BORRICHIUS, Olaus.
Copenhagen: Sumptibus Petri Hauboldi, Reg. Acad. Bibl. 1674. First edition, and "one of the few copies having the folding plate illustrating three types of retorts, as well as the four-page dedication to Jean Baptiste Colbert. According to the Wellcome Library catalogue, 'this plate is a copy from a MS. Of Zosimus (ca. 500 A.D.) of the earliest known illustration of distilling apparatus.' In this work Borrichius answers Hermann Conring's De Hermetica Aegyptiorum Medicina (Helmstedt, 1648), wherein the extreme antiquity attributed to alchemy had been seriously doubted. Borrichius's book contains valuable information on the early history of alchemy. The substantial final portion supports Paracelsian theory as applied to medicine. No other editions except this one of 1674 exist. Although several works by Borrichius were reprinted in Magnet's Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa (Geneva, 1702), this was not among them. "Ferguson states that there 'were apparently two issues of this book, for I have seen other copies without the dedication and the plate.' Duveen confirms this, his copy being without the plate and dedication. The Wellcome Library catalogue states that this is the second issue, although on what authority I do not know. This issue is very rare." (The Roy G. Neville Historical Chemical Library). Small 4to (197 x 147 mm), contemporary vellum, pp. [xii], 448 [8:index] and folding engraved plate facing p. 156, light uniform browning throughout, in all avery good copy in its original state.

Imprenta Real, Madrid. Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, Guerra de Granada, Madrid, Imprenta Real, 1674. 4°., 6 hs. + 147 fols. He proved what both he and Hooke contended, that only a portion of air is used in respiration and combustion, by demonstrating that air in an enclosed space, when burned or breathed, is reduced only by one fourteenth. He also discovered that the muscles were the source of animal heat, and the double-articulation of the ribs with the spine. With the 'Benevolo Lectori' preliminary leaf bound before the 'Lectiones Geometricae.' Bound in a contemporary English speckled calf with a spine divided by raised bands into 6 richly gilt compartments. The book-block is strong and the hinges hold very firmly. The leather upon the front hinge is lightly cracked, but the cords hold firmly. The boards themselves, the edges and the corners show only slightest wear. Internally, the leaves are toned, but generally clean, with ample margins and clear print throughout. There is light occasional spotting and little marginal staining, which remains quite unobtrusive. The title page show a very small burn hole not affecting text, the second F2 got a small burn-hole in the outer margin, not affecting text as well.
