Including: [drop-title:] De monumento Sinico commentarius novensilis. [drop-title:] Caput Primum. Historia lapidis. [Berlin, Georg Schultz?, 1674?]. Marbled boards (ca. 1800?). A series of works apparently printed and published together (even though the second title-page gives a different publisher and date) on various aspects of China and its culture, by the gifted orientalist Andreas Müller (1630-94). The title-page of part 1 lists seven numbered subjects for its brief observations: history, missionaries in China from the time of the Old Testament to the time of publication, Chinese emperors and other rulers, ginseng and its medicinal uses, astronomy and the calendar, geography and the relation between the names of the planets and the days of the week. Part 2 is devoted primarily to the transliteration in italic type of an extensive Chinese inscription, using special diacritical marks to indicate the tones and representing them also with Western musical notation above the text. It was a 781 "Nestorian" (East Christian) inscription that had been discovered in the 1620s and first published … [Click Below for Full Description]

Treaty of Westminster]
London, 1674. [2],12pp. Small quarto. Modern three quarter calf and cloth, spine gilt. About fine. The First British printing of the Treaty of Westminster, ending the Third Dutch War. The Dutch, beset by enemies on all sides, were forced to make trading concessions throughout the world, and to again surrender New York, which they had retaken. This is the final passage of New York into British hands. The treaty effectively eliminated the Dutch threat to British colonization of the mid-Atlantic states, and meant that in the future the French would be the main challenger to British hegemony in North America. The fifth article provides for the removal of British settlers from Surinam. This is the official Latin text, apparently preceding an English- language printing of the treaty and is quite scarce, with EUROPEAN AMERICANA locating only four copies. DAVENPORT 69. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 674/86. SABIN 2146 (other eds). WING C2916.

PETTUS, Sir John
London printed for T. Bassett at the George in Fleet-street, 1674. 8vo., (8) + 72 + 75 - 87 + (1) + 88 - 89 + 89 - 188 + (4)pp., including final blank, text continuous despite pagination (see ESTC), blank strip cut away from foot of title-page but not near printed surface or ruled border, rather later calf-backed boards, sympathetically rebacked, spine fully gilt in compartments, with the early 20th century bookplate of Leonard Lionel Bloomsfield*>. Only edition. This is an off-piste little book by the natural philosopher and politician Sir John Pettus (ca. 1613-1685), best known now probably for his works on minerals and mining. In his dedicatory piece to his neighbour, Leister Devereux, Viscount Hereford, Pettus observes, self-deprecatingly, that 'possibly, these excursions might have been more excusable to me in my youth, than in my age; but it is a solace to me, that I can be yet youthful in my notions .'. * Leonard Lionel Bloomsfield was an extraordinary bibliophile. His principal library of some 13,255 volumes (including incunabula and manuscripts and a large part of the personal library of the poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning), is now held by Brighton & Hove City Library. LEEUWENSON, Joannes (Pieter Arend LEUPE, ed. & intro.).
First publication of the manuscript journal of Joannes Leeuwenson's 1674/75 overland journey from Colombo (Ceylon/Sri Lanka), along the west coast of India to Banda Abbas (Iran, at the Strait of Hormuz), Basra (Iraq), Aleppo (Syria), and Iskenderun (Turkey), then on to Livorno (Italy), and through Italy and Germany to Amsterdam. The manuscript itself is titled "Daghregister van de Landreijs, gedaeen bij mij Joannes Leeuwenson, ..." He quotes in full (4 pp.) the letter with orders given to him by VOC director François de Haese at Banda Abbas as well as several other letters he received or wrote. He gives a detailed description of the terrain and the difficulties in finding and acquiring supplies, beasts of burden, etc., and relates his encounters with Persians, Ottomans and other Islamic peoples. In very good condition. An important early journal of an overland voyage through India, Iran and the Middle East.
