PETTUS, Sir John
London printed for T. Bassett at the George in Fleet-street, 1674. 8vo., (8) + 72 + 75 - 87 + (1) + 88 - 89 + 89 - 188 + (4)pp., including final blank, text continuous despite pagination (see ESTC), blank strip cut away from foot of title-page but not near printed surface or ruled border, rather later calf-backed boards, sympathetically rebacked, spine fully gilt in compartments, with the early 20th century bookplate of Leonard Lionel Bloomsfield*>. Only edition. This is an off-piste little book by the natural philosopher and politician Sir John Pettus (ca. 1613-1685), best known now probably for his works on minerals and mining. In his dedicatory piece to his neighbour, Leister Devereux, Viscount Hereford, Pettus observes, self-deprecatingly, that 'possibly, these excursions might have been more excusable to me in my youth, than in my age; but it is a solace to me, that I can be yet youthful in my notions .'. * Leonard Lionel Bloomsfield was an extraordinary bibliophile. His principal library of some 13,255 volumes (including incunabula and manuscripts and a large part of the personal library of the poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning), is now held by Brighton & Hove City Library. LAMBRECHTSEN, Nicolaas Cornelis.
1674. Muller, America 1086; Sabin 38745. First edition of Lambrecht's account of the Dutch colony in America up to its cession to England in 1674, as well as an account of the fate of the Dutch settlers after the British takeover. It covers the discovery and exploration of the regions around present-day New York, the Dutch relations with the English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts Bay, and the English takeover. New York was beginning to establish itself as America's leading city in the early nineteenth century, and a growing interest in its history made the history of the Dutch colony topical. The folding map, entitled "Kaart van Nieuw-Nederland" combines an up-to-date cartographic image based on Aaron Arrowsmith's 1804 Map of America, with historical data from maps in Arent Roggeveen's 1675 sea atlas and Arnoldus Montanus's 1671 atlas of America. In 1817 Lambrechtsen (1752-1823) was made an honorary member of the New York Historical Society, which published an English translation of his book in 1841.With occasional minor foxing, but otherwise in fine condition with the final integral blank leaf and virtually untrimmed. The sprinkled paper wrappers, covering only the sides, remain in very good condition, but the spine retains only tattered parts of the original paper spine with the printed title, leaving the sewing and the folds of the quires partly visible. A fascinating Dutch history of Dutch America. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Pierre Le Petit, Paris, 1674. In-12 (174 x 101 mm) de 14 pp. ch. et 2 fleurons gr. dépliants; demi-maroquin rouge (reliure moderne). Picot, 164; cf. Bibliothèque M. D[ubos]. Corneille, Rouen, 1993, n° 81.
Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary", bound with an extensive manuscript pharmacopoeia containing hundreds of medicinal recipes. The manuscript is in several hands, but one appears to match Johan Schröder's 1674 owner's inscription in the Gogler, which notes that he is a surgeon, so he is probably at least in part the author/compiler. We do not know whether the author is related to Johann Schroeder (1600-1664), born in Westfalen, author of Phamacopoeia medico-chymica sive thesarus pharmacologicus (Ulm, 1641). Little is known about Carl de Gogler. His book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). The first edition, in folio format, was extensively revised for the present second edition and the illustrated engraved title-page added. With Schröders owner's inscription on the back of the engraved title-page. The Gogler lacks leaf L5 (pp. 169 & 170). With leaf 2[pi]1 of the manuscript detached, minor marginal damage to the printed title-page repaired and occasional minor stains, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is rubbed and dirty, with some cracks in the backstrip. A remarkable primary source for medicinal practices among the common people of Westfalen ca. 1674.

Verhandelende hoeman in alle voorvallen van Twist in Handtgemeenschap, sich kan hoeden: en alle Aengrepen, Borst-stooten, Vuyst-slagen &c. verstetten. Quarto (235 × 189 mm). Contemporary full vellum, remnant of ink lettering to the spine. 71 etched plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, plate 6 was originally duplicated and the duplication corrected at the time by the imposition of the correct plate numbered 7, over it, so neatly is this done that it is barely visible from the recto. A little rubbed, the front free endpaper somewhat creased and with some loss at the lower corner, light browning, a few faint damp-stains in margins, occasional finger-soiling, some minor chipping at the edges, but overall very good. First edition of this renowned manual of self-defence. The work is particularly notable for the telling combination of de Hooghe's clear, but nonetheless dramatic, illustrations, and the simplicity and lucidity of Petter's written instructions. Prof. Sydney Anglo describes it as "historically speaking, the most important treatise on unarmed combat ever printed ... the finest of all wrestling books and deservedly the most famous" (The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe, p.190). While Eli Steenput, in the introduction to his English translation (Journal of Western Martial Art, October 2000), remarks that "It is probably unique in presenting an effective and complete unarmed combat system in a format from which it would be actually possible to learn". BACON, Francis
London: Printed for Thomas Williams, 1674. Small folio, (xxxii), 38, (14), 322, (20) pp, lacking the final blank leaf. Frontispiece portrait, laid down with a small piece lost from the outer edge, slightly later inscription to the top of the title page, armorial bookplate of Granville C. Cuningham, author of two books on Bacon, to paste down and noted as having been transferred from the previous binding, a more recent bookplate to the fly leaf. 20th century half roan, marbled sides, maroon spine label. "'The Advancement of Learning' was divided into two books. The first was an eloquent and powerful defence of the importance of learning to every field of life... The much longer and more important second book was a general survey of the contemporary state of human knowledge, identifying its deficiencies and supplying Bacon's broad suggestions for improvement. The book's real importance was not so much its encyclopaedic character but rather its professed aim of propagating the Baconian ideas of the advancement of learning and knowledge, and of the practical means of accomplishing it" (ODNB). Gibson 142. Wing B312. Originally published as "The Twoo Bookes of Francis Bacon..." in 1605, with a number of editions in both English and Latin appearing subsequently.
