Serlin, Wilhelm

WALDENSIANS].
Bibliografia Valdese 1672; STCN (1 copy); Tiele, Pamfletten 5035; WorldCat (3 copies); not in Knuttel. Rare copy of a pamphlet on the massacre of the Waldensians in Piedmont in 1655. It is probably a second edition as the title-pages mentions: "Jouxte la copie impriméé à Haerlem 1663", though no copies from this previous Haarlem edition are known. The Waldensians are a Christian movement with its origins in the later Middle Ages in France and they were persecuted as heretics from the 12th century onwards. From the early 17th century they were considered as early forerunners of the Reformation. In 1655 the Duke of Savoy commanded the Waldensians of Piedmont to attend Mass or leave in 20 days. The remaining Waldensians were massacred, causing indignation throughout Europe. Some waterstains in the upper margins; wrappers with slightly rubbed edges and spine restored with cello tape. Otherwise a good copy of this rare pamphlet on the Piedmont massacre.

LA MOTTE, Antoine Houdar de.
Cioranescu 36530; Cohen-De Ricci, p. 594 ("Très belle édition, rare et recherchée"); Fabula Docet 94; Fürstenberg 74; Lewine 289; Populus, Gillot Cat, 31-98; Sander 1095. First edition of a famous French fable book, beautifully illustrated by the most famous artists of the day. The book contains 100 fables by Antoine Houdar de La Motte (1672-1731), modelled after the fables by Jean de La Fontaine, the most important French fable author ever. Of special interest is La Motte-Houdart's introductory essay on the genre of the fable, setting out rules to be followed, based on the classical ideals of true likeness, unity and proper arrangement. He intends to rival both Aesop and La Fontaine. The book at the same time represents a milestone in French book illustration, introducing Rococo miniatures or vignettes, including 62 by the interior and costume designer Claude Gillon, one of his few works as a book-illustrator. The "Actor's fable" is dedicated to him.Binding rubbed with a few small defects; some slight staining and thumbing. Very good copy.

VAENIUS, Otto (Otto van VEEN).
, . . Landwehr, Romanic emblem books, 479; Praz, pp. 402-403 & 523-524. Attractive copy of a splendidly illustrated edition combining Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata and Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs, tiree de la philosophie des Stoiques..... Pierre Daret had made the emblems in De Gomberville's work based on Vaenius's, enlarging and slightly improving them after the latest fashion. The Brussels publisher had probably acquired Daret's plates, and used them again in the present edition, returning the authorship to Vaenius, while also retaining De Gomberville's instructive comments. In this perfect combination of Vaenius' educational emblems and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on stoic philosophers and explained for the instruction of youth, the quotations from Horace made into emblems became popular again.Slightly browned with some marginal thumbing. In very good condition.

The first work by Nieuhoff first appeared in Dutch in 1665. It describes the embassy to China led by Pieter van Goyer and Jakob de Keyser on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. Setting out from Batavia, they arrived in Canton on 17 March 1656, and were in Nanking by 17 July. Chinese officialdom, court etiquette and the opposition of the Jesuits (including Father Adams) conspired to prevent any major trading concessions being granted by the Emperor Chun-Chi. The embassy returned to Batavia on 31 March 1657. Nieuhoff, an eyewitness in his position as Steward to the Ambassadors, includes many incidental remarks on the manners and customs of the Chinese, together with a second part comprising a general description of the Chi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guericke, Otto Von
1st Edition Amsterdam: Johanned Jansson Waesberge, 1672. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREAT SCIENTIFIC CLASSICS: "Describes the invention of the air pump and the famous experiment with the Magdeburg hemispheres, in which two teams of eight horses were employed in an attempt to pull apart two copper hemispheres from which the air had been withdrawn. Guericke also describes the invention of the first electrical machine, which generated the first visible and audible electric charges" (Honeyman). "In 1650 Guericke constructed the first air pump, which he used to create a vacuum in various containers. He showed that sound would not travel in a vacuum, and furthermore that a vacuum would not support combustion or animal life. In 1654 Guericke gave an impressive demonstration in front of the emperor Ferdinand III, of the force of atmospheric pressure. Two identical copper hemispheres 12 feet (3.66 m) in diameter were joined together. When the air was pumped out, 16 horses could not pull them apart although when the air reentered the hemispheres they fell apart by themselves. He also showed that 20 men could not hold a piston in a cylinder once the air had been evacuated from one end of it... In 1663 he built the first electrical friction machine by rotating a sulfur globe against a cloth... The results of these and other experiments were published in his Experimental nova Magdeburgica de vacuo spatio (1672; New Magdeburg Experiments Concerning Empty Space)" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). The magnificent large folding plate of the great public experiment with the horses … [Click Below for Full Description]

Signatures: A8 a-b8 B-Z8 Aa-Dd8. Contemporary polished calf, spine with 5 raised bands richly gilt in compartments (very minor wear to extremities). Internally only little browned. Plates 2 and 8 split at lower fold, plate 3 with closed tear at gutter; leaf D3 with small hole affecting page number. A fine copy printed on strong paper. ----Wing, W-2828; NLM/Krivatsy 13017; Norman 2246; Garrisson-M. 1544; Wellcome V, p. 443. One of two octavo editions, published in England shortly after the initial quarto and with copperplates identical to the quarto version. Willis recognized the difference between the symptoms of gross brain disease and those of mental illness. Because he postulated a disturbance of the brain and nerves in terms of disordered "animal spirits" in the absence of pathological findings, he is often considered the first to have equated mind disease with brain disease. Also includes probably the earliest description of general paralysis, and the paracusis of Willis. Near Fine.

HUGHES, William
1672. 12 p.l. (the first a blank), 159, [9] pp. (final leaf blank). 12mo, cont. sheep (spine faded, a bit rubbed). London: J.C. for W. Crook, 1672. First edition of "the earliest work in English on the medicinal virtues of North American tropical plants. Based on first-hand observations made in the West Indies. Evidence suggests that Hughes began his career in 1651 with a privateering voyage to the West Indies, during which he traveled to Barbados, St. Kitts, Cuba, Jamaica and mainland Florida. He appears to have spent a good deal of time visiting British plantations on Jamaica and Barbados, where he observed and made descriptions of a large number of New World tropical plants including potatoes, yams, maize ('the wheat of America'), bananas, avocadoes ('Spanish pears'), chili peppers, watermelons, sugarcane, guavas, prickly pears, coconuts and manioc. Hughes's work 'contributed greatly to the spread of the American indigenous use of plants either for Meat or Medicine.'-Wilson & Hurst, Chocolate as Medicine [2012] p. 55."-Garrison-Morton 7007 (on-line version, new addition). While little is known about Hughes (active 1665-83), he did leave evidence in his books that he had worked at one time at Radley, in Warwickshire, and that he had travelled throughout England and to the vineyards in Europe. This book was written during his time in the West Indies. The last third of Hughes's book is devoted to the medicinal properties of chocolate, which he called the "American nectar." This is an extremely rare book on the market and our copy is very fine in its first … [Click Below for Full Description]
