BOYLE, Robert
first edition, first issue8vo.[6], 142; [2], 17, [1 (blank)]; [12], 176; [2], 19, [1 (blank)]; [2], 16; [2], 39, [1 (advt.)]pp., contemporary calf sometime rebacked and refurbished at corners, smooth spine panelled by double gilt fillets and with a brown morocco label, lacks the preliminary blank leaf A1 and the blank leaves x7-8 (as usual), fore-edges of boards bit worn, some light toning as usual, very good copy.Fulton Bibliography .. Robert Boyle, 101WING B4060ESTC r10383 Collation: [pi]3, B-I8, K1, (*)-(*)8, (**)-(**)8, k-u8, x6, K2-K8, L-O8, P2 - with no initial blank [pi]1 and x7-x8 blank "Important observations on respiration are scattered through nearly all of Boyle's works. He was impressed with the idea that life was a slow-burning flame, and he often pointed out the analogy between living processes and the burning of a candle. It was in the present tract, however that he gave special attention to the theme, insisting upon the term flamma vitalis (pp.105 et seq). In many places he approached the modern theory of oxidation" [Fulton]. While the book was in the press Boyle as an afterthought decided to add more material. This was to be be inserted in middle of sheets already printed and this has resulted in an interrupted sequence of gatherings with almost 200 pages introduced between leaves K1 and K2 and with the gathering x (the last of the of extra material) coming long before gathering P, the last gathering of the book proper. The book was reissued in 1673 with a cancelled title page dated for that year.

GUERICKE, Otto von.
Amsterdam: Johanned Jansson Waesberge, 1672. First edition, and a fine copy, of one of the great classics of science. "A book of prime importance in electrical discovery, air-pressure and the vacuum pump" (Dibner). Guericke proved the existence of a vacuum through his famous experiment, illustrated by one of the double-page plates. "At Ratisbon in 1654 Guericke had performed one of the most dramatic experiments in the history of science, when, before the Imperial Diet, he showed how two teams of eight horses each could not separate a bronze pair of hemispheres from which he had exhausted the air" (ibid.). To create the vacuum, Guericke invented the air-pump, and in a series of experiments that followed he demonstrated the weight and elasticity of air. The air-pump became of fundamental importance for the study of the physical properties of gases. Guericke also demonstrated electrical attraction and repulsion, the discharging power of points, and constructed the first electrical generator. "Guericke constructed a spherical rotor of sulphur mounted on a crank; its rotation and contact upon it generated the first visible and audible electric sparks" (ibid.). As the Wheeler Gift catalogue remarks, "This remarkable work on experimental philosophy ranks next to Gilbert's in the number and importance of the electrical discoveries described. Electric conduction and repulsion, the discharging power of points, the dissipation of charge by flames, the light due to electrification, the crepitating noises of small sparks are all recognized". Guericke's experiments were motivated by his …

Newton, I.
London, John Martyn, 1672-1673. 4to (22.0 x 16.1 cm). This is a collection of all original issues forming the true first edition of volume 7 of the "Philosophical Transactions" (issues 81-91), including a general title page for the entire volume. These issues comprise pages 3,999-5,172, plus an index and four foldout plates. Many figures in the text. Contemporary leather panels with a fine, old style leather spine with five raised, gilt-ornamented bands, rich gilt compartments with floral pattern and two burgundy morocco labels with gilt title. Mottled edges.= One of the most important volumes of the 'Philosophical Transactions'. Isaac Newton published his famous theory of light and colours in volume 6 (no. 80) of the Transactions. It was a publication that shook the scientific world of that day, and is still considered one of the cornerstones of science. Naturally, a lively debate followed - staged partly in the "Philosophical Transactions" during the following year. His theory, which included the notion that white light was in fact a combination of colours, also explained chromatic abberation. Consequently, Newton turned his attention to telescopes and devised a new type of telescope that combined refraction with reflection. It is the first paper in this volume, which is the collection of original issues of the Transactions from 1672 and 1673, and thus a fascinating window to the period just after the publication of Newton's theory of light. Apart from Newton's answers to his critics on his new theory of light, and some letters of his critics (the Jesuit Ignatius Pardies … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
