RUSSIA. Carte Nouvelle de Tout L'Empire de la Grande Russie Dans L'Estat Ou Il S'Est Trouve A La Mort De Pierre Le Grand.

      - Highly decorative originally coloured rare map shows Russia in the year of death of Peter the Great (1672 - 1725), with a portrait of the emperor above the large cartouche. The map embraces the area between Germany, Poland, Middle East, India, China, Japan and Corea. Map shows cities, roads, tribes, deserts etc. Text in the map describes tribes, nations and cities. The northern and eastern outlines of Siberia, Kamchatka Peninsula and Novaya Zemlya take on a conspicuously nebulous apperence, owing to the fact that they were largely unexplored and certainly uncharted. Explorers would not reach many of these rgions until much later in the 18th century. The publishing house Covens & Mortier was founded on 20th November 1721, by Cornelis Mortier, a son of a famous Parisian publisher Pierre (Pieter) Mortier (1661-1771) , and his brother-in-law Joan (Johannes) Covens. After Joan’es death in 1744 his son Joannes Covens II (1711-1794) joined the company. The company kept its name until 1778, when it was renamed in J. Covens & Zoon. It was later joined by Pierre Mortier IV. The heirs of Convens and Mortier kept the publishing house until the 19th century. The last owner was Cornelis Johannes Covens (1806-1880).

1672 Barlaam & Josaphat Martyrs Buddha John of Damascus Buddhism Christian Arab

Tot Antwerpen : Voor Cornelis Woons ., 1672. - 1672 Barlaam & Josaphat Martyrs Buddha John of Damascus Buddhism Christian Arab VERY Rare with 9 INCREDIBLE Woodcut Illustrations Saint John of Damascus (c. 675 – 749) was a Syrian monk and priest. Born and raised in Damascus, he died at his monastery, Mar Saba, near Jerusalem. Barlaam and Josaphat (Latin: Barlamus et Iosaphatus) are two legendary Christian martyrs and saints, their story probably based ultimately on the life of the Buddha. It tells how an Indian king persecuted the Christian Church in his realm. When astrologers predicted that his own son would someday become a Christian, the king imprisoned the young prince Josaphat, who nevertheless met the hermit Saint Barlaam and converted to Christianity.         A DESCRIPTION OF THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA; WITH THE OTHER ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA, TO WHICH THE ENGLISH ARE RELATED, viz

London: London, and Westminster, 1672. 12mo. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, gilt leather label. Text lightly foxed. Small closed tear in largest map, neatly repaired. Very good. Rare early work on Jamaica and the other American and British Caribbean colonies, published by British mapmaker and bookseller Richard Blome. Three issues are indicated by ESTC, each with minor variations in the imprint. Blome added to the sparse knowledge of the times, fully describing the products, resources, and natives of British America. To do this he relied heavily on the notes of then Governor of Jamaica Thomas Lynch and the summaries of explorations described in Lederer's DISCOVERIES (1672). Lederer's is a firsthand account of the explorations through Virginia, the Carolinas, and other American possessions, considered the first scientific report on those regions. The three rare folding maps are "A New & Exact Mapp of y. Isle of Jamaica" engraved by Wenceslas Hollar, who had worked on Blome's great atlas, A GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FOUR PARTS OF THE WORLD (1670); "A Generall Mapp of Carolina, Describing Its Sea, Coast and Rivers," derived from the famous Horne map of 1666; and "A Draught of the Sea Coast and Rivers, of Virginia, Maryland, and New England," with an inset of Newfoundland. Fewer than ten copes located in ESTC.

RELATIONS DE DIVERS VOYAGES CURIEUX. QUI N'ONT POINT ESTÉ PUBLIÉES, OU QUI ONT ESTÉ TRADUITES D'HACLUYT, DE PURCHAS, & D'AUTRES VOYAGEURS ANGLOIS, HOLLANDOIS, PORTUGAIS, ALLEMANDS, ESPAGNOLS; ET DE QUELQUES PERSANS, ARABES, & AUTRES AUTHEURS ORIENTAUX

Paris, 1672. Folio. 18th-century calf, spines gilt; rebacked with original spines laid down. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Light toning and foxing. Very good. A handsome set of Thévenot's significant and wide-ranging compilation of voyages and travels to the New World, Australia, Asia, the East Indies, the Far East, and Africa. This work is an essential document for the study of European discovery and exploration to all areas of the known world in the early modern period, reprinting numerous texts first published in several countries in a variety of languages. Complementing the texts are maps, plates, and in-text illustrations documenting voyages and explorations, geographic areas, coastal profiles, flora, fauna, native costumes and customs, and exotic alphabets and languages such as Chinese, Chaldean, and Mexican pictographs. Most significant among these are two different issues of the first map to show a separate Australian continent, by Abel Tasman. Melchisedech Thévenot (ca. 1620-92) was a French author and scientist. He is well known for his work on THE ART OF SWIMMING (1696) and for his invention of the bubble level. Additionally, he compiled this important collection of travel narratives which contains many important maps, including the Abel Tasman map of Terra Australis and some of the earliest and most detailed depictions of the Middle East. This work is particularly valuable for its content on China and the East Indies. Included here is a lengthy geographical description of the Chinese empire by Martino Martini, the Jesuit missionary and historian. Martini (1614-61) spent most of the last twenty years of his life in China, studying the country's history and geography in an objective manner, making his account incredibly useful to scholars both then and now. Accompanying Martini's work is a large and detailed map of China; there are several other sizable maps of the East Indies present as well, showing India, the Philippines, and Ethiopia. American voyages are discussed in the preliminary "Avis" in the beginning of the work, and the primary texts of New World interest are found in part four. These include Acarete du Biscay's VOYAGE...A BUENOS AIRES SUR LA RIVIERE DE LA PLATE, first published in Paris in 1672 (which itself includes Juan de Palafox y Mendoza's "L'Indien, ou Portrait au naturel des Indiens"); a marvellous forty-six-page woodcut facsimile of the CODEX MENDOZA taken from the London 1625 edition of Samuel Purchas' PURCHAS HIS PILGRIMES; and Thomas Gage's RELATION DU MEXIQUE, ET DE LA NOUVELLE ESPAGNE, an abridged translation of Gage's THE ENGLISH-AMERICAN, HIS TRAVAIL BY SEA AND LAND which was first published in London in 1648. Beyond the Americas, the work includes François Pelsart's account of the discovery of Australia, complete with the rare map based on the explorations of Abel Janszoon Tasman. One of the first charts to show parts of the Australian coastline in detail, it records part of the coast of New Guinea, Tasmania, and much of the east coast of Australia. It is a basic work of Australian cartography, present here in both the first issue, with incorrect latitudes, no Tropic of Capricorn, no rumb lines, and without Tasman's track, and its third issue, with the Tropic of Capricorn inserted and with the rhumblines. "In any state the map is a great rarity. It is one of the earliest charts devoted entirely to Australia, and is the first French map of Australia" - Davidson catalogue. Other historical relations include accounts of Egypt, accompanied by plates of the pyramids and mummies; travels into various portions of the Asian landmass, including Russia; voyages sponsored by the Dutch East Indies Company; and different expeditions to China. The work is extremely complex bibliographically, as different parts were reprinted to accompany texts issued in later editions. "There is really only one edition of Thévenot's collections, issued in five parts between 1663 and 1696. Part one was first issued in 1663, part two in 1664, part three in 1666, part four during 1672-4, and part five in 1696. During the course of publication, the parts of the collection already published were reissued with new titles pages in 1664, 1666, 1672, 1683, and 1696. Some sheets were reprinted for these reissues. The contents and arrangement of individual copies vary" - EUROPEAN AMERICANA. This copy conforms to the "second issue" of the first three volumes, all dated 1666, with the fourth volume appearing in its first issue and dated 1672. The Lenox Library's account of Thévenot, compiled in the 19th century, remains the best source in its delineation of the various segments and configurations. The maps are an invaluable source of information. According to the Lenox Library collation, all maps here are present excepting a map of Japan. However, the Tasman map of Australia is present in two copies, in both the first and third states. The maps are as follows: 1) "Carte de la Colchida." 14 x 18 inches. Accompanies text on travels to Georgia and the Caucuses. 2) "Description de la partie des Indes Orientales qui es sous la domination du Grand Mogol." 14 x 17 inches. Map showing the northern part of the Indian subcontinent as controlled by the Mughal Empire. 3) "Vera delineatio civitatis Bassorae nec non fluuiorum...." 13 1/2 x 16 inches. An engraved plan of the city of Bassora and its environs. 4) "Terre Australe." 16 1/2 x 22 inches. The rare first state of the Abel Tasman map, the first map of Australia. 5) "Terre Australe." 16 x 28 inches. The third state of the Abel Tasman map. 6) "Ioao Teixeira cosmographo de sua megestad Afez em Lixboa...." 29 x 21 inches. Showing the eastern coast of Africa. 7) "Muro que por entre serras se continua por mais de 360 leguas fi zer...." 21 1/2 x 28 1/2 inches. Shows Borneo, the Philippines, and the eastern coast of China. 8) "Route du voyage de Canton a Peking." 10 x 26 inches. The route of the Dutch Ambassadors. 9) "Imperii sinarum nova descriptio." 19 x 25 inches. A large map of China and the southern portion of Japan, quite detailed. 10) "Carte d'Ethiopie et de l'empire des Abyssins, autrement du Prestre-Jan...." 13 x 16 inches. Map of Ethiopia and the Abyssinian Empire. 11) "Entre'es quelques ports de la Mer Rouge de coste de l'Ethiopie...." 10 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. Shows three woodcuts of harbors on the Red Sea along the coast of Ethiopia. One of the primary collections of voyages and travels, documenting European explorations to all known areas of the world in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In a brown half morocco and cloth box. One of the first extensive descriptions of the natural history of New England, containing the first woodcuts of native plants of the area to appear. Josselyn came to New England in 1638, for a year, visiting again from 1663 to 1671. After his second return he published this account of the animals and plants of the country, as well as herbal remedies. The work is divided into six parts: birds, beasts, fish, serpents and insects, plants (the longest section), and minerals. Included are descriptions of the black bear, beaver, the rattlesnake, the sperm whale, the turkey, and much more. The section on plants discusses scores of specimens and relates their curative powers. The final four pages of the regular text contain a description of an Indian squaw, as well as a poem about her. The final fourteen pages, often lacking, are "A Chronological table of the most remarkable passages, in that part of America, known to us by the name New- England." This traces the history of New England from the voyages of Cabot, but is mostly devoted to New England from the founding of Plymouth. The folding plate of the lavender plant is often lacking, and is not present here. A foundation work of early American natural history.

Venice, Combi & La Noù, 1672. - 4to. (14), 296 pp. With engr., illustrated title, woodcut printer's device to printed title page, and 21 engravings in the text, mostly half-page. Contemp. vellum. First Italian edition of Sir Paul Rycaut‘s famous Turkish chronicle, "The Present State of the Ottoman Empire", first published in 1668 and drawn from various authentic sources and from the author‘s own observations. "His most important work [.] presents an animated and, on the whole, faithful picture of Turkish manners" (DNB). "Provides an account of the society and political system of the Ottoman Empire with unprecedented thoroughness" (cf. Osterhammel, Die Entzauberung Asiens, 32). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century" (Blackmer, 2nd ed. only). Constantino Belli's version is probably based on the 1670 French translation by Pierre Briot. The attractive engravings by Suor Isabella Piccini depict dignitaries and persons of various ranks in their costumes, as well as the illustration of a turban, specially mentioned by Atabey. - Covers slightly warped.         Historia Naturale. nella quale ordinatamente si tratta della diversa condition di Minere, Pietre pretiose, & altre curiosita. Con varie Historie di Piante, & Animali, sin' hora non date in luce.

      - Venice, Combi and La Noù, 1672. Folio (320 x 220mm). pp. (viii), 696, (6), title in red and black with large engraved vignette, double-page engraved plate showing the interior of Imperato's museum, and 126 woodcuts in the text. Contemporary vellum, spine with brown gilt lettered label. A fine copy of the second edition (first 1599) of this beautiful catalogue of the 'Museo' of the Neapolitan apothecary Ferrante Imperato (1550-1625) and his son Francesco. This edition was prepared by Giovanni Maria Ferro who added new material and also new illustrations to the final chapter. Imperato's collection of natural history specimens was one of the earliest of its kind in Italy and the catalogue was the first to contain both plants and animals."The museum of Ferrante and Francesco Imperato of Naples was as famous as Calceolari's and in Ferrante's 'Historia Naturale', . several pages are devoted to molluscs and some of the shells illustrated are easily indentifiable" (Dance pp. 15-16)."The catalogue is divided in 28 books with substantial sections on mining (5 books) and alchemy (9 books), the remainder being devoted to animals and vegetable specimens. Ferrante Imperato took a scientific interest in his collection and was one of the first people to recognise the mysterious 'bronteae' and 'ombriae' as meteoric stones and proved that 'Jew stones', a popular 'Wunderkammer' specimen, were in fact the pertified points of an 'echinus'. In G.M. Ferro's addenda to the catalogue is an interesting description and illustration of red and black indian ink in a Chinese ink bottle and decorated vase (p. 677)" (Grinke, From Wunderkammer to museum n. 22).Besides Ferro's added illustrations and text, the second edition differs in having an engraved view of the museum interior, whereas in the first edition the scene is represented in a much cruder woodcut. The vignette on the title depicts hills, the shore, and the sea with a variety of plants, sea and land creatures, and minerals arising under the astral influence rained down from the heavens, with the motto 'ab uno'. Outer upper corner of one leaf with old repair without loss of text. A very fine copy.Provenance: Old stamp on verso of title with crown and eagle, surrounded by text.Cobres I, p. 165 n. 16; Hunt 321; Murray I, p. 85.; Nissen BBI, 2111.

Small 8vo. Near contemporary full calf biding with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. All edges of boards gilt. Hinges, capitals and corners with wear. Cords showing at front hinge, but still tight. Slight spotting to margins of title-page and some scattered brownspotting (not heavy). Overall a fine, unrestored copy with wide margins. Book plate to inside of front board and an old library stamp (Académie de Chirurgie) to title-page. (26), 455, (1) pp. Engraved frontispiece.. The rare first edition of the first book devoted entirely to surgical anatomy. Genga's milestone work founded the discipline of anatomical surgery; it was frequently reprinted and remained a widely used manual for decades after its first appearance. Genga furthermore, in the tract appended to this work (i.e the "Breve Discorso" on the circulation of the blood, pp. 420-448), showed himself to be one of the first Italians to accept Harvey's theory on the circulation of blood. "Though anatomy was hitherto cultivated with much success as illustrating the natural history and morbid states of the human body, yet little had been done for the elucidation of local diseases, and the surgical means by which they may have been successfully treated. The idea of applying anatomical knowledge directly to this purpose appears to have originated with Barnardin Genga, a Roman surgeon, who published in 1672, at Rome, a work entitled "Surgical Anatomy, or the Anatomical History of the Bones and Muscles of the Human Body, with the description of the Blood-vessels". This work, which reached a second edition in 1687, is highly creditable to the author, who appears to have studied intimately the mutual relations of different parts." (Encyclopaedia Britannica). This foundational work, Genga's first work, was extremely influential and widely used. It was reprinted a number of times within the following decades. The first edition of it is of great scarcity. Most of the bibliographies only have later editions, and one of the few copies that are listed on OCLC is incomplete, lacking the title-page. We have only been able to locate one copy at auction within the last 40 years (in 1979). It never ceased to profess the unity of the church and died a victim of persecution of Christians ordered by Valerian in 258.

Liber primus: De affectibus naturales hominis functiones laesas vel constituentibus, vel producentibus, vel consequentibus", first published one year before; cover all aspects of internal medicine. - - The title of the English abridged edition of 1675 translated by Rochard Gower was "A new idea of the practice of physic. The first book, of the diseases either constituting, producing, or following the natural functions of man not in health; wherein is containd, beside a new method in general, a vindication of the spleen and mother from fits attributed to them; as also a new discovery of intermitting fevers, the yellow jaundice, and other diseases, never before discovered; all cleard by anatomical experiments and chymical demonstrations, as also by their cures" - - Franciscus de le Boe Sylvius (1614-1672), professor of the practice of medicine of Leyden, was one of the foremost physicians of his time. In 1637, Sylvius, as he was called, is credited by Haller giving the first description of the lateral cerebral fissure which bears his name. Although the aqueduct from the third to the fourth ventricle had been previously noted, Sir Michael Foster says we owe to Sylvius the name of the aqueduct. Both anatomical structures are described in Sylvius's Diputationes Medicarium. To clinical neurology Sylvius contributed the observation that some tremors were always present and some appeared only during movement." Mc Henry , Histotry of Neurology, p.64.R> - "Sylvius was the first to describe the tubercles in phthisis. In the history of medicine, however, Sylvius was the most brillant representative of the iatrochemical school, founded by Paracelsus and continued by J.B. van Helmont, which reached its zenith when Sylvius defended the chemiatric conception from the Leiden chair. He was convinced that all physiological and pathological processes could be conceived perfectly in analogy in the chemical laboratory and could be explained by fermentation, effervescence, and putrefaction. Acid and alkali were considered as fundamental principles in the animal body." - - "In his therapeutics Sylvius preferred the new chemical medicines to the Galenic ones, using mercury, antimony, and zinc sulfate, among others. His rather speculative and extravagant theories included the belief that the pancreatic juice was acid and effervesced with the alkaline gall in the duodenum, and that ferments went to the heart, where he thought the blood effervesced. Considering the spleen to be the organ in which the blood is purified, he stressed its function to such an extent that he was called patronus lienis. ..." G.A.         Rare collection of published letters by Isaac Newton on his theory of light, and on Newton's telescope. (Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, volume 7.)

. London, John Martyn, 1672-1673. This is a collection of all original issues forming the true first edition of volume 7 of the "Philosophical Transactions" (issues 81-91), including a general title page for the entire volume. These issues comprise pages 3,999-5,172, plus an index and four foldout plates. Many figures in the text. Contemporary leather panels with a fine old style leather spine, hardly distinguishable from an original period binding.l One of the most important volumes of the "Philosophical Transactions". Isaac Newton published his famous theory of light and colours in volume 6 (no. 80) of the Transactions. It was a publication that shook the scientific world of that day, and is still considered one of the cornerstones of science. Naturally, a lively debate followed - staged partly in the "Philosophical Transactions" during the following year. His theory, which included the notion that white light was in fact a combination of colours, also explained chromatic abberation. Consequently, Newton turned his attention to telescopes and devised a new type of telescope that combined refraction with reflection. It is the first paper in this volume, which is the collection of original issues of the Transactions from 1672 and 1673, and thus a fascinating window to the period just after publication of Newton's theory of light. Apart from Newton's answers to his critics on his new theory of light, and some letters of his critics (the Jesuit Ignatius Pardies in particular used the Transactions to publish his critiques on Newton's theory), this volume contains several additional papers by Newton and others on Newton's telescope. This type of telescope, with a cleverly constructed short tube, is still very popular among amateur astronomists. "Newton built his reflecting telescope because he suspected it could prove his theory that white light is composed of a spectrum of colours. Colour distortion (chromatic aberration) was the primary fault of refracting telescopes of Newton's day, and there were many theories as to what caused it. During the mid-1660s with his work on the theory of colour, Newton concluded this defect was caused by the lens of the refracting telescope behaving the same as prisms he was experimenting with, breaking white light into a rainbow of colours around bright astronomical objects. If this was true, then chromatic aberration could be eliminated by building a telescope which did not use a lens - a reflecting telescope." (Wikipedia). Furthermore there are important contributions on, for example, astronomy and science by Flamsteed, Cassini, Hevelius, Boyle, Huygens and others, and natural history by Lister, and others. This volume contains the following contributions by Newton, which deviates from those listed in Gray, p. 45, who records one paper less: "An accompt of a new catadioptrical telescope, invented by Mr. Newton", pp. 4004-4009, with a folding plate; "An extract of a letter, received very lately (March 19th) from the inventor of this new telescope", pp. 4009-4010; "Mr. Newton's letter to the publisher of March 26, 1672, containing some more suggestions about his new telescope" pp. 4032-4035; "An extract of another letter of the same to the publisher, dated 30 March. 1672. by way of answer to some objections, made by an ingenious French philosopher to the new reflecting telescope", pp. 4034-4034; "Mr. Isaac Newton's considerations upon part of a letter of monsieur de Berce printed in the eighth French Memoire, containing the catadrioptrical telescope, pretended to be improv'd and refined by M. Cassegrain", pp. 4056-4059; "Some experiments propos'd in relation to Mr. Newtons Theory of light, printed in Numb. 80; together with the observations made thereupon by the author of that theory; communicated in a letter of his from Cambridge, April 13. 1672.", pp. 4059-4062; "Mr Newtons letter of April 13. 1672. ft. v. written to the publisher, being an answer to the foregoing letter of P. Pardies", pp. 4091-4093 (Pardies' letter, regarding Newton's theory of light, is on pp. 4087-4090); "A serie's of Quere's propounded by Mr. Isaac Newton, to be determin'd by experiments, positively and directly concluding his new Theory of light and colours; and here recommended to the industry of the lovers of experimental philosophy, as they were generously imparted to the publisher in a letter of the said Mr. Newtons of July 8. 1672.", pp. 4004 [recte 5004]-5007; "Mr. Newton's answer to the foregoing letter (By P. Pardies, regarding Newtons theory of light, on pp. 5012-5013), pp. 5014-5018; "Mr. Newtons answer to some considerations upon his doctrine of Light and colors, which doctrine was printed in Numb. 80 of the tracts.", pp. 5084-5103 (20 pp. in total). Endpapers renewed in period style. A fine copy. Gray, 231 (2-10)..
