Behn, Mrs. A [Aphra]
London: J. M. for Thomas Dring, 1671. First edition. Modern full panelled calf binding with raised bands and a red morocco spine label. Quarto (pages 126 x 116 mm) collates complete: [iv], 82, [2]. First two leaves and last leaf with paper repairs. Early ownership signature of a woman reader, Mary Howard, on the title page along with her note "first edition." Occasional light foxing; marginal annotation on final leaf. Else a very nice, clean copy of this scarce text that has come only three times to auction, with its last appearance over 30 years ago. Separated from her husband and in need of a means to support herself, Aphra Behn made literary history by becoming the first professional female playwright in England. "Forced to write for bread and not ashamed to own it," Behn rapidly developed a reputation for quick wit, political timeliness, and a concern for the cultural limitations placed on women. Her inaugural play, The Forc'd Marriage, was staged in 1670; and popular demand allowed for her second play, The Amorous Prince, to follow just five months later in 1671. Strengthened by positive reviews, Behn used The Amorous Prince to further develop the themes that would characterize her career, examining how contemporary approaches to sex and marriage placed women at social disadvantage. Notably, the legal ban on female actors had only recently been lifted from the English stage in 1660; and The Amorous Prince was one of the first plays to use the Shakespearean device of the cross-dressing "breeches part" with a woman actor. Again, Behn won over her audience. Following the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[BRUSSELS - PHARMACOPOEIA]. [JOCQUET, Joannes, and others].
Ad 1: Anet (3 copies, 2 of which are incomplete); Blake, p. 348; Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 71-72 (6 copies); STCV (2 incomplete copies); Wellcome IV, p. 357; ad 2: Anet (3 copies); Daems & Vandewiele, p. 151; STCV (2 copies). Ad 1: Rare third edition of the Brussels pharmacopoeia which, with the exception of small changes, was a reissue of the second edition of 1671 as this had completely sold out. Brussels had begun discussing plans to establish a Collegium Medicum ca. 1605, but failed to do so. A 1636 plague gave city magistrates the impetus to compile a pharmacopoeia, however, and they commissioned four leading city physicians (Joannes Jocquet, Paulus de Hullegarde, Ludovicus Fabri and Joannes De Lau, not mentioned on the title-page, but acknowledged by name in the preliminaries) to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia, which appeared in 1641. No apothecaries were officially consulted in the compilation of the Brussels pharmacopoeia, reflecting the growing status of physicians and declining status of apothecaries. Amsterdam had produced the first official pharmacopoeia in the Low Countries in 1636, based in part on Valerius, but the Brussels physicians chose to take the 1638 Paris Codex medicamentarius Parisiensis as their principal model.Ad 2: Rare commentary and correction on the Brussels pharmacopoeia by the pharmacist and Leiden professor Sassenus. In the introduction, the auhor states that he sought to improve the dispensatory most in use in the city of Leuven, as well as alter the recipes to reflect the manner in which the medicines were prepared in that city. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Helmstedt: Johann Heitmüller . 1671 - 4°, 80 pp., modern hard cover bound in marbled paper, modern white end papers (Very Good, narrow upper margin, some words underlined with black ink). A book includes a first-hand report of Turkish customs by a Croatian author Bartolomej Djurdjevic, who lived 13 years as a Turkish slave after the Battle of Mohács in 1526. - The author Bartolomej (Bartul) Durdevic (c. 1506 - c. 1566) was a Croatian soldier, who was captured by Ottomans at the Battle of Mohacs in 1526. After living in Turkey for 13 years, being sold as a slave for 7 times, he finally escaped through Armenia, Syria and Palestine to a Franciscan monastery in Jerusalem. He became author of numerous texts, warning people against the danger of Turkish attacks. He also wrote the first short Croatian-Latin dictionary. This book talks about the Turkish customs and includes a short Latin-Turkish dictionary of phrases. Djurdjevic’s book wes translated from Latin to other languages and re-published into the 17th century, every time there was a danger of Turkish attacks, since it was a useful first-hand source of information of Turkish customs. Thomas a Kempis
Plantin, Antwerp 1671 - A handsome Plantin Press edition of this seminal work by Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ. Well laid out, with clean and clear type, wide margins, and a delightful title page engraving. The historicity of the Plantin Press adds to the desirability of this edition, being one of the leading printers of the 16th century during a period The Imitation was very popular. This book also boasts provenance (see note below). Complete, in all four books (Libri IV). About The Imitation of Christ - "The Imitation of Christ (Latin: De Imitatione Christi) by Thomas à Kempis is an important 15th century Christian devotional book, first composed in Latin ca. 1418–1427; a handbook for spiritual life. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work next to the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate; apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ. The text is divided into four books, which provide detailed spiritual instructions: 'Helpful Counsels of the Spiritual Life', 'Directives for the Interior Life', 'On Interior Consolation and 'On the Blessed Sacrament'. " - Wikipedia Provenance - This book was in the care of the Milltown Park Jesuits until a Sotheby's sale in June of 2017. The book hails from the library of William O'Brien, the judge and bibliophile (most famous for presiding over the Phoenix Park murders in 1882). The Jesuits released a number of their books to auction stating that they'd seen very little use in their 100 … [Click Below for Full Description]

MEIBOM, Marcus.
Amsterdam: [Christoffel Cunradus,] 1671. Quarto (201 × 142 mm). Contemporary vellum, title inked to the spine, marbled edges. Eighteenth-century ownership inscription of the classical scholar Johann Christoph Wernsdorf to the first blank. Covers just a little rubbed and mildly sprung, first blank separating, but not loose, light toning, a highly attractive copy. Superb folding etched frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe showing 5 separate sections of oared vessels, printer's device to title page, diagrams to the text, extensive use of Hebrew and Greek types. First and only edition of this uncommon treatise on ancient shipbuilding, drawn from classical and Biblical sources, illustrated with a beautiful, etched frontispiece by de Hooghe. Born in Tönningen, Schleswig-Holstein, around 1630, Meibom was a Danish philologist and polymath scholar probably best known for his work on music in antiquity. His Antiquae musicae auctores septem of 1652 printed seven Greek works together with his Latin translations of them, and it is known that he attempted concerts of reconstructed Greek music. Meibom was summoned to the court of Queen Christina; became a professor at the Soroë Academy at the time when Christian IV was attempting to turn it from a "knight academy" into a full university; was later chief of the customs office as Helsingöer; and was made professor of history at the Athenaeum in Amsterdam in 1668. In the present work he essays an accurate reconstruction of the construction and organization of the ancient trireme from a collation and analysis of contemporary sources.
