Stephano Skinner
Londini: typis T. Roycroft, & prostant venales apud H. Brome et al, 1671. First edition, folio, unpaged, and collating *2, a1-[a2], B1-[D4], E1-V2, Aa1-[Uu4], Xx1-[Zz2], Aaa1-[Xxx4], Zzz1-[Zzz6], Aaaa1-[Xxxxx2] (all in 4's), and including the approbation leaf; full brown calf antique, double gilt border on covers, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, red morocco labels in 2; a few old small library rubberstamps, but still a very nice copy in a handsome, modern binding. Includes sections on botanical etymology, ancient names of English rivers and towns, and obsolete Anglican words. While the Etymologicon of Skinner "appears at first to represent a radical departure from the beaten paths of English lexicography. .. there was a definite foreshadowing of the sort of work that Skinner published. .. It represents not something new under the sun of lexicography, but rather a convergence of significant influences. .. (Starnes & Noyes, pp. 64-65). Holyoke, Blount, Phillips and Minsheu had made earlier attempts at compiling English etymologies, but this work was issued at a time when Anglo-Saxon scholarship was being revived, and it had considerable influence over contemporary and later etymologists; and its comprehensiveness exceeded that of the earlier lexicographers. Indeed, the work was a major source for Johnson who acknowledges in his Preface his indebtedness to Skinner. Wing S3947; Alston V, 353; Graesse VI, p. 420; Zaunmuller, col. 115. [Christianity, Religion] ~ COALE, Josiah The books And Divers epistles Of the Faithful servant of the lord Josiah Coale; Collected and Published, as it was desired by him the Day of his departure out of the Life [London]. [s.n.], Printed in the Year 1671, . Quarto. 28, 33-104, 152, 269-344pp. Complete despite erratic pagination. Contemporary sheep. Extremities worn and marked, loss to head and foot of spine, splitting to upper joint, remnants of metal clasps and some surface loss to boards, worm-holes in places. The sole edition of the posthumously collected writings of Quaker minister Josiah Coale (c.1632-1668). Convinced to the Society of Friends in 1654, Coale spent a majority of his ministry in America, and was possibly the first Quaker to set foot in the territory that would become Pennsylvania. He endured great hardship in his support of his Quaker brethren: after banishment from Virginia he settled in New England, where he suffered imprisonment on numerous occasions. Coale was the confidant of Quaker leader William Penn (1644-1718), with whom he travelled in 1668 to meet with the Duke of Buckingham in an attempt to secure relief for their abused brother Friends. Penn provides a laudatory prefatory testimony on Coale for this volume (though undated, likely printed in August 1671 fol … [Click Below for Full Description]

COALE, Josiah
[s.n.], Printed in the Year 1671, [London]. 28, 33-104, 152, 269-344pp. Complete despite erratic pagination. Contemporary sheep. Extremities worn and marked, loss to head and foot of spine, splitting to upper joint, remnants of metal clasps and some surface loss to boards, worm-holes in places. Pastedowns sprung, inked ownership inscription of 'William Steevens 1809' to FEP, without FFEP, later inked ownership inscription of 'Rebeccah Steevens' to foot of title-page, leaves B2-B3 detached with chipping to edges, leaves Hhh1-Hhh2 working loose, occasional worming to margins. Penn provides a laudatory prefatory testimony on Coale for this volume (though undated, likely printed in August 1671 following the former’s release from Newgate prison), in which he states; 'Twas his life and joy to be speaking the Word of the Lord, and not his own: And many thousands doubtless rest behind, who are living Testimonies to the Pow … [Click Below for Full Description]

SOREL (Charles)
The Honour of Chivalry or Don Bellianis of Greece is a book of Spanish cavalries. It is regarded as a Castilian chivalric romance novel. The first and second parts were originally published in 1545. The work deals with the life of Price Don Belianis of Greece, a fictitious son of Emperor Belianus of Greece and Empress Clarinda. The work is referred to in Don Quixote of La Mancha and is cited as Don Quixote's favourite book. It is saved from the expurgation of Don Quixote's library in Chapter 6, part I. According to the ESTC there had been four translations of the work prior to this. The first was in 1598 and was not followed by another until 1650 which was book I only. Amstelodami [Amseterdam]: sumptibus Andre Frisii, 1671; 1671. Amstelodami [Amseterdam]: sumptibus Andreæ Frisii, 1671; 1671. 2 works bound as 1, often found together. 12mo., pp. [xii], 379, [xli] + 4 plates, including 3 folding; 84, [xii] + 1 folding plate. De Pileo with engraved title-page and second title-page with vignette (both part of first gathering), many engraved illustrations several of which occupy a full page, with final blank leaf. Very slightly toned but clean, short repaired tear to De Toga Romana's folding plate at gutter. Contemporary vellum, title inked to spine, edges sprinkled red. A few marks and smudges, corners very mildly rubbed, a very good copy indeed. Solerius' De Pileo is a curious work on hats and headgear, pseudonymously published by the French Jesuit theologian Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663). Amongst the numerous illustrations, the engraved title-page is signed by Romeyn de Hooghe; one folded plate is signed by Cornelis Galle. This 'new edition' of 1671 followed its original publication in Leiden in 1655. Here, it is found paired with the second edition of Girolamo Bosso's work on Roman secular and clerical togas, which made its first appearance in Pavia in 1614. Skinner, Stephano, M. D.
typis T. Roycroft, & prostant venales apud H. Brome [et al.], Londini, 1671. While the Etymologicon of Skinner "appears at first to represent a radical departure from the beaten paths of English lexicography . there was a definite foreshadowing of the sort of work that Skinner published . It represents not something new under the sun of lexicography, but rather a convergence of significant influences . 115. Pinto, Fernão Mendes
Amsterdam Heinrich & Dietrich Boom, 1671. First edition in German. Small 4to, pp.[ii, engraved title], [vi], 392, [1, colophon], [1, blank], 11 plates. Bound in 18th-century quarter vellum over boards. Lower hinge split, lower board still attached to spine. Contents in very good condition. The first German edition of the travels of Fernão Mendes Pinto (1509-1583), who left Portugal as a young man to sail to the Far East. By 1541 he had reached Malacca, which he describes in great detail, together with the struggles of its ruler against Aceh. From Malacca, Pinto sailed to Hainan, and then along the Chinese coast. After several battles with pirates, Pinto's party made port at Ningbo, but were quickly expelled from the city. They travelled on to Nanjing and then Beijing, where Pinto was imprisoned for robbing an imperial grave. Sentenced to hard labour on the Great Wall, he offered his services to an invading Mongol army. He eventually reached Malacca, by way of a voyage to the Japanese island of Kyushu, in 1545. Pinto wrote this narrative in old age, spicing his youthful memories with a mixture of imagination and other travellers' narratives. Some elements of his own travels have been questioned, but many details are corroborated in contemporary sources, and the more fantastical details are readily recognised. These travels were first published in Portuguese in 1614 and proved enormously popular. Pinto's travelogue shaped the European idea of the Far East. By 1700 it had been published in six languages across nineteen different editions. Cordier BS 2068; Morrison II, p.334; R … [Click Below for Full Description]
