Med Reguler, Forklaringer, Exempler, Eftertænckninger oc Paafindelser, sammenskreffven aff Severin Povelsøn. Kiøbenhaffn: Christen Jensen Wering 1671. [40] + 612 + [4] s. Nogle sider med nogen brunering. Indbundet i nyt helpergamentbind i gammel stil. [Marius Kristensen]. Udgivet med kommentarer i Danske Metrikere ved A. Arnholtz og Erik Dal, 1954-60. Bibl. Danica VI, 70. Peter Jensen 104.

Folio. 8,830pp. Second Oxford edition, first published 1670. This famous dictionary of people, places, names, antiquities, coins, deities, literature, etc., originally published in 1530 by Charles Estienne, of the celebrated family of printers, was enormously corrected, re-edited, and added to by Nicolaus Lloyd of Oxford "An harmless, quiet man, and an excellent philologist," (DNB) who spent 30 years on the project. The title in ink, in gothic script, on the fore- edge, is characteristic of early libraries, where the books were shelved spine-in. Light toning of paper, and some marginal nicks to title, not affecting printed area. Otherwise fine in a modern cloth binding. (Cordell 123. Lowndes 2507. BL 1487.w.4.)., Fine

Collijn Sveriges bibliografi 1600-talet 826. VD17 23:237989W.

Montanus, Arnoldus
Amsterdam: Jacob Meurs, 1671. [8],585,[27]pp. plus seven portraits, thirty-two double- page plates, large folding hemispheric map, and fifteen double-page maps. Seventy engraved in-text illustrations. Engraved title. Thick folio. Original vellum, blindstamped cover, raised bands, manuscript title on spine. Internally clean and near fine. Minor repairs to hemispheric map. An excellent copy of this foundation work of Americana. The map is attributed to Jacob Meurs. Correctly called "a classic book on America" by Borba de Moraes, Montanus' narrative contains a wealth of interesting maps and illustrations on both North and South America. The work was later translated into English, with various alterations, by John Ogilby, but this Dutch edition is the true first. The North American section of Montanus contains notable versions of the Blaeu map of New England and New Netherland, as well as versions of the John Smith Virginia and Carolina maps. Among the engravings in the text is one of the first engraved views of New York (the very first, the Van der Donck view, appeared twenty years earlier). There is also a detailed map of Bermuda. There are numerous engraved views of cities and scenes in Mexico and the Caribbean. Much of the second half of the volume is devoted to Brazil, where the Dutch were deeply involved for decades in the 17th century, illustrated with numerous maps and views. The large double-sheet views are excellent and much copied in later publications; but, as Church comments: "The finely executed engravings of this work are especially brilliant in this, the o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Second and enlarged edition of the major work of the astrological physician Richard Saunders (1613–1675), a member of William Lilly's circle who acted as physician to Lilly and Elias Ashmole, to whom this edition is dedicated. On its first publication in 1653, this was his first publication. Aimed at the richer end of the market, this second edition, an expensive and profusely illustrated folio, with additions including a discussion of divination by moles, was issued at a price of 10 shillings. Reflecting his practice as an astrological physician, it is essentially a practical composition, including material drawn from earlier and contemporary continental writers such as Michael Scot, Paracelsus, Della Porta, Cardano, Goclenius, Robert Fludd and Jean Belot. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seville, En Casa de la Viuda de Nicolas Rodriguez, 1671.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Folio (31.2 x 21.2 cm.), contemporary vellum (slightly soiled, repaired, recased, new endleaves). Total of 20 engravings, some folding, many with emblems (see below). Double-rule borders on each page, with ample margins. (4 ll.), 343 pp., engraved title, 2 engraved portraits, 9 large folding engravings, 9 folio-size engravings. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of the finest Spanish festival book of the seventeenth century. Hofer described it as "The best illustrated Iberian book, by all odds, contained in the Harvard Collection." It records the festivities connected with the canonization of D. Fernando III, for which elaborate decorations were made at the Cathedral of Seville - some of them by the important Sevillan artist Juan de Valdés Leal. The portrait of D. Fernando III was engraved from a design by Murillo. The title-page and the portrait of D. Carlos II are after Francisco Herrera. The large plates show several aspects of the exterior of the Cathedral of Seville, decorated for the occasion, as well as the main doorway, the high altar, etc. The smaller engravings, each divided into 4 sections, show emblems and devices. One of these was engraved by Lucas Baldes, age 11 ("Lucas Baldes F. de edad de 11 A's"). The plates were designed by Murillo and Velázquez, and engraved by Matías Arteaga. Rena avskrivningar från bl.a.

London: Printed by the Author, 1671.. Engraved frontispiece, thirty-seve plates (six portraits, thirty-one views and plans [two of these folding, twenty-nine double- page]), nineteen maps (two folding, seventeen double-page), sixty-six engraved illustrations. Ruled in red throughout, title printed in red and black. Folio. Contemporary English paneled calf gilt, covers with paneling tooled with fillets and roll tools, the inner panels with lozenge-shaped stylized floral-spray tools, expertly repaired, the spine in seven compartments with raised bands, green morocco lettering-pieces in the second and third compartments lettered in gilt, edges stained in gilt. Portrait facing p.60 expertly remargined, some small neat repairs to margins and folds. Very good. In a tan morocco-backed cloth box, lettered in gilt on spine. A very fine large copy of Ogilby's first edition of this important work, here ruled in red for presentation and including the rare Lords Proprietors map of Carolina. The binding, the size and the rubrication of this copy of Ogilby's most important publication all suggest that this copy was prepared for presentation. The ruling in red of a book (an essential part of manuscript production in the middle ages) had come to be a costly extra process by the second half of the 17th century, and one that was reserved for copies of books that were intended for presentation. The McGill University copy of Francis Willughby's ORNITHOLOGY (published in 1678) was edited by John Ray and presented by him to Samuel Pepys (probably when he was President of the Royal Soc … [Click Below for Full Description]
