London-Benjamin Tooke, 1671. Book. An interesting book of practical advice for country clergymen. The second edition, with a new preface by Barnabas Oley. George Herbert (3 April 1593 1 March 1633) was a Welsh born English poet, orator and Anglican priest. KIRCHER, ATHANASIUS - MATTEI, INNOCENTY.
Amsterdam, 1671 circa. Athanasius Kircher (Germania, Geisa 1602 - Roma, 1680) fu gesuita tedesco e monaco camaldolese. Educato a Fulda divenne voracemente curioso e coltiv? i pi? svariati interessi, dagli studi filosofici e umanistici a quelli fisico matematici. [Click Below for Full Description]

VIMINA, Alberto.
Venice, Appreso Gio. Pietro Pinelli, 1671. 4to. (8),+ 231, 236-368 pp. Dampstain on some pages from p. 45 and forward, a minor loss of paper at p. 103. Discrete note in ink on the front fly-leaf. Slightly worn 19th-century black half calf, gilt spine with blind stamped paper boards. From the library of the Swedish orientalist J. G. Sparwenfeld, with his somewhat cut signature on the title, and from the library of Ericsberg. Warmholtz 4371, for the part dealing with Sweden. Carlander II, 176. It's divided into three parts: 1. Delle guerre civili de Polonia. 2. Vimina … [Click Below for Full Description]

MEIBOM, Marcus.
Amsterdam: [Christoffel Cunradus,], 1671. Quarto (201 × 142 mm). Contemporary vellum, title inked to the spine, marbled edges. Superb folding etched frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe showing 5 separate sections of oared vessels, printer's device to title page, diagrams to the text, extensive use of Hebrew and Greek types. Eighteenth-century ownership inscription of the classical scholar Johann Christoph Wernsdorf to the first blank. Covers just a little rubbed and mildly sprung, first blank loose, light toning, a highly attractive copy. First and only edition of this uncommon treatise on ancient shipbuilding, drawn from classical and Biblical sources, illustrated with a beautiful, etched frontispiece by de Hooghe. Born in Tönningen, Schleswig-Holstein, around 1630, Meibom was a Danish philologist and polymath scholar probably best known for his work on music in antiquity. His Antiquae musicae auctores septem of 1652 printed seven Greek works together with his Latin translations of them, and it is known that he attempted concerts of reconstructed Greek music. Meibom was summoned to the court of Queen Christina; became a professor at the Soroë Academy at the time when Christian IV was attempting to turn it from a "knight academy" into a full university; was later chief of the customs office as Helsingöer; and was made professor of history at the Athenaeum in Amsterdam in 1668. In the present work he essays an accurate reconstruction of the construction and organization of the ancient trireme from a collation and analysis of contemporary sources. Penn, William
London, 1671. 20pp. Small quarto. Modern red calf. Evenly tanned, a few leaves soiled around edges. Withal, very good. Rare third edition of William Penn's second published work, a spirited espousal of his religious beliefs above and beyond any other faiths. He discusses the condition of humanity since the fall from the Garden of Eden, criticizes Catholics for their rituals and beliefs, and attacks Protestants for their intolerance. "The passion of a new convert is clearly evident in this short pamphlet in which [William Penn] denounced the wickedness and errors of Catholics and Protestants alike and declared that Quakers alone hold the key to 'Life and Salvation.' Not yet caught up in the pamphlet war that Friends waged against their enemies, [Penn] apparently issued this blast against all other Christians out of sheer exuberance during his first months as a Quaker" - Bronner & Fraser. Apparently no copies of this edition are on OCLC, nor is it listed in Smith or Whiting's bibliographies of Friends' books. Bronner & Fraser locate only two copies. A rare early work by the future founder of Pennsylvania, showing the intolerance of a new convert to the Society of Friends. BRONNER & FRASER, PENN BIBLIOGRAPHY 2C. [JESUITICA / GOUVEA, Antonio de / VERBIEST, Ferdinand et al]
Canton, 1671. Soft cover. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio [29 x 18.5 cm]. 45 ff.: (2) ff., 1-43 ff.. Xylographic (woodblock) Chinese printing on double-leaves folded at fore-edge, with frontispiece showing the emblem of the Jesuit Order (reproduced in Cordier, p. 26) in white on black. Original paper binding with original sewing, includes slipcase. Ownership inscription dated 1808 on fly leaf. Small loss on the title page upper blank margin, repair to clean tear on leaf 30; small worm holes in a few leaves, sometimes affecting partial letters or border. Generally very good. Rare first and sole edition of this Chinese-Latin text of imperial rulings in favor of Christians, a collaborative effort by the missionaries Gouvea, Buglio, Magelhaëns and Ferdinand Verbiest. A scarce example of Chinese xylographic printing by the Jesuits, such works constitute a fascinating moment in East-West cultural exchange, showing how Chinese technology was appropriated by the Jesuits both for local consumption and export back to Europe. That the Jesuits were able to produce books in Chinese caused a sensation in Europe, and proclaimed the success of the Jesuit missionary enterprise in Asia in the eyes of both the Order and European patrons. The Innocentia victrix includes both Gouvea's tract vindicating the Jesuits and the text of an imperial edict issued at Peking reconfirming tolerance towards the Christian religion. Its publication represents an end to the persecution of Christian missionaries that was unleashed by a series of charges levelled at Jesuits in 1664-66. The dec … [Click Below for Full Description]

The author was inspired to write this work by Giovanni Nigraval's Epilogus chronicarum, Brescia 1536, which included a panegyric of the Augustinians. The Roseto is in part a translation of that section of the Epilogus, but it includes five clearly marked additions by D. Leonardo giving further elaboration on the history of the Augustians in Portugal, particularly at Coimbra; these total 80 pages (about a quarter of the book).D. Leonardo (1619-1703), a native of Lisbon (his secular name was Leonardo Saraiva Coutinho) traveled to Ireland to visit the Augustinians there, but found the island full of heretics. He spent some time in Paris before returning to Portugal, where he was named royal preacher and became a widely consulted authority on ecclesiastical ceremonies.Cerveira (who worked in Porto) was one of the few late nineteenth-century binders whom Matias Lima considered worthy of mention.
