EDWARDS Charles 1627/8-1691?. (WILLIAMS P editor 1756-1837)
R Jones, Dolgellau, 1671. In the publishers plain blue paper boards, corners and edges bumped and worn slightly, lower cover loosing its blue paper cover revealing brown board. Spine, a little torn, titles in red ink to newer paper, edges bumped, some tape. Internally, fpd raised and almost loose, some very light spotting to prelims, marginal water stain to first few pages, Good, (xliv), [1], 26-555 pp, with an interesting subscribers list, tail device to final page, text block edges uncut, most pages uncut! possibly unread!, preface and notes in English, text in Welsh, first published in 1671, this copy not dated but c 1822. Housed in its own up and over brown cloth box with gilt tooling and title to a maroon leather label. A genuine rarity! Edwards, Welsh-language writer and preacher, went to Oxford, to the university printer, to print Ffydd ddi-ffuant (1667), a book that he had no doubt been preparing during the previous few years. It was further changed and improved by 1671 when the second edition was published. In 1677 he returned to Oxford to print the third edition ¿with Augmentation¿. This was Y ffydd ddi-ffuant, sef, Hanes y ffydd Gristianogol, a'i rhinwedd, which became a classic of Welsh prose. See ODNB. WILLIAMS, PETER, cleric and author See NLW WBO. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Launoy, Jean de.
Paris: L'imprimerie de la Veuve Edme Martin, 1671. 8vo (18.7 cm, 7.4"). [2], 77, [1] pp. A widow's printing of this polemic on the controversy over baptizing repentant heretics, attacking the previously published remarks of M. David; this edition follows the first of 1653. The author, a French historian and famously skeptical hagiographer, was a staunch Gallicanist, and => an early hand has pencilled "Très Gallican" on the title-page here. Uncommon: WorldCat and NUC Pre-1956 locate only two U.S. institutional holdings of this 1671 edition, one of which was deaccessioned and is in fact this copy. Contemporary mottled sheep framed in blind double fillets, recently rebacked with complementary calf, spine with raised bands and blind-tooled compartment decorations; edges and extremities rubbed, sides with old scuffs. Title-page and first text page with institutional perforation-stamp, title-page also with pencilled annotation as above, first text page with rubber-stamped numerals in lower margin, no other markings. Pages clean.

Valerius Maximus
Typis Danielis Elzevirii [Daniel Elzevir], Amstelodami [Amsterdam], 1671. contemporary brown full calf binding; four raised bands; a previous owner's signature dated 1728 on front paste-down; [8], 328 pp; age toning to end papers; no foxing including none on the engraved title page; no browning except for outside edges of text block and none to interior of pages; Elzevir (sometimes spelled Elzevier or Elsevier) is the surname of the famous family of Dutch booksellers, publishers and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. Daniel Elzevir ran the business with his cousin Louis from 1654 to his death in 1680; even though the House of Elzevir (founded in 1580) ceased printing operations in 1712, its reputation has continued to grow; "Elzevirs" are small original and beautifully printed reprints of the classics and important scholarly books that could be carried in one’s pocket and became prized and avidly collected. Valerius Maximus was a Latin writer and author of a collection of historical anecdotes. He worked during the reign of Tiberius (14 AD to 37 AD). His book, Factorum et dictorum memorabilium libri ix (c. ad 31) (Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings) was intended for use in the schools of rhetoric and written to exemplify human virtues and vices; the 340 year old binding is well worn; hinges however remain strong and the spine is square; Valerius Maximus published Dictorum Factorumque Memorabilium Libri IX c. 31 C.E. but little is known of the life of this first century writer. PATRICK, SYMON
London: Printed for Fr. Tyton, 1671. Third Edition. This collection of popular devotional writings by an influential Anglican cleric is offered here in a binding similar in design and tooling to one attributed by Nixon and Davis to the celebrated Queens' Binder A (the artisans known collectively as the "Queens' Binders" produced finely decorated volumes for Catherine of Braganza and Mary of Modena, the queens consort of Charles II and James I). Giving the feeling of great swirling animation, our binding contains a floral roll border, a four-petaled flower with elongated top petal, and an eight-petaled flower on the spine--all of which appear on a 1675 edition of Allestree's "Government of the Tongue" attributed to Queens' Binder A. Nixon has tentatively identified "A" as William Nott, an identification based on a passage in Pepys' diary which recounts a visit to that famous binder, during which Pepys purchased a book "only that [he] might have one of [Nott's] bindings" (i.e., entirely for the binding, no matter the contents of the book). The only elaborately bound volume in the Pepys library at Cambridge that is not either a book of great personal value or a book dedicated to Pepys is a work on the succession to the Crown of England, which bears the tools of Queens' Binder A. Nott, like Samuel Mearne, was a publisher and bookseller in addition to his work as a binder. After his shop in Saint Paul's Churchyard was destroyed in the Great Fire, he moved his premises to Westminster--soon to be the location of choice for the leading binders--where he was active until about 1689. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
Incisione in rame in buone condizioni. Taken from "Latium, id est, nova et parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi descriptio", published in Amsterdam in 1671. The work followed a long tradition of "chorography", but unlike works of his predecessors, which tended to be on the whole of Italy, Kircher's book had as its focus the much more limited area of Latium itself. Kircher's explanation of the purpose of this study was that he wanted to use the physical remains of ancient Latium to teach the reality of human mutability and transience. Giovanni BOTERO
Perli Bertani. New edition, after the original was published in 1591 and 1593. Illustrated with 4 folding maps of Gioseppe Rosatio, Europe, Asia, America and Africa, on gray background. The work went through many reprints in the seventeenth. Full vellum flexible time. Back to nerves Jansenist. Title in black pen. Universal geography Botero is a way to assess the real power of all states. Botero writes his Relazioni in the wake of his great political work from reasons of state and can only be understood in its wake. If the work is a classic universal geography, with a description of all parts of the world then known in the first part, the remaining parts describe the world this time of political and religious point of view, favoring instead the Catholic evangelism Worldwide. The book was originally a request of Cardinal Borromeo on the state of Christianity in the world. The Relazioni are transmitting a geopolitical worldview, but under the terms of the Counter-Reformation. Botero trying to reach the geographical space and political space, providing Catholicism against the Reformation and its future expansion. Many modern geographers made of the work of the charter birth of modern geography by using methods employed by Botero, although the book offers a triple worldview (geographical, political and religious) and not unilaterally Geographic. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. PALAFOX Y MENDOZA, Juan de.
London: W. Godbid, 1671. Octavo, with the four page advertisement of the bookseller Moses Pitt at the rear, some of the early pages a little dusted and a few marks throughout; but a very good copy in a recent period-style binding of dark calf, spine decorated and gilt, with russet morocco label. First edition of this important early work on China, now quite rare. The first major news from China to be reported in the Western world was the Manchu conquest of 1644, beginning with Father Martinio Martini's generally accurate De bello tartarico (1654), a work which traced the history of the hostility between the Chinese and the Tartars north of the Great Wall.Palafox y Mendoza, who held bishoprics in both Spain and Mexico, served briefly as the viceroy of New Spain. In addition to his ecclesiastical duties, Palafox was also in charge of the dispatch of vessels to the Philippines during his stay in Mexico. In this capacity he collected "letters and memorials" on events in China as they were forwarded to him, using them to prepare this work, the second European history of the Manchu conquest. He begins his account with the rebellion of Li Tzu-ch'êng and Chang Hsien-Chung in 1640, and provides a good history of the conflict. Moreover, although saddened by the revolt, Palafox does not revert to simply depicting the Manchus as barbarians, arguing that the collapse of the empire was due largely to slow deterioration and neglect. His work is now primarily known for his interest in Chinese government, religion, dress, customs, military techniques and manners (see Donald F. Lach & Edwin J. … [Click Below for Full Description]

GARDENING]. GEISSNER, Johan Georg.
1671. For Sintzendorff: ADB XXXIV, pp. 408-412. A testimonial letter for a Hungarian journeyman gardener during his Wanderjahre, from Johan Georg Geißner, master "lust Gartner" at Schloss Laxenburg, outside Vienna, the principal summer residence of the Holy Roman Emperor, Karl VI. Philipp Ludwig Wenzel, Graf von Sinzendorff (1671-1742), was Imperial Erbschatzmeister, which apparently included responsibility for the gardens. Since 1721 he had also been director of the österreichischen Orientalischen Handelskompanie, so he may have had a hand in acquiring some of the garden's exotic plants. The document is folded up and has some minor stains on the back, but is in very good condition, though without the seal that would originally been attached with cords through the slits at the foot.
