Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
"Taken from ""Latium, id est, nova et parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi descriptio"", published in Amsterdam in 1671. The work followed a long tradition of "chorography"", but unlike works of his predecessors, which tended to be on the whole of Italy, Kircher's book had as its focus the much more limited area of Latium itself. Kircher's explanation of the purpose of this study was that he wanted to use the physical remains of ancient Latium to teach the reality of human mutability and transience. Copper engraving, slight browning, some alone ink in the lower margin, otherwise in good condition." Amsterdam Amsterdam

Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
1671. "Bella carta topografica, composta da tre fogli, dedicata a Frascati - l'antica Tusculum - e alle ville papali del suo territorio. Simbolo di prestigio dell' aristocrazia romana, erano destinate all'attività di rappresentanza ed al soggiorno estivo della corte pontificia. Da iniziali case di campagna circondate da terre coltivate e da boschi, divennero veri e propri palazzi signorili, grazie all'intervento dei più valenti architetti ed artisti dei secoli XVI e XVII, fra i quali il Vignola, il Vasanzio, Giacomo della Porta, Giovanni Fontana, Borromini ed il Vanvitelli. Tra il '700 e l'800 erano meta del Gran Tour. La tavola proviene dall'opera ""Latium, id est, nova et parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi descriptio"", pubblicata ad Amsterdam nel 1671. RICHELET (Pierre);
Estienne Loyson, Paris. [Click Below for Full Description]

Slight foxing and a few rust stains. A nice copy from Biby Manor in Sweden. Collijn Sveriges bibliografi 1600-talet does not mention this edition. Possibly VD17 23:686483U and VD17 23:686485K, respectively, which probably were published together. "Pacifici a Lapide" is a pseudonym for the legal scientist Philipp Andreas Oldenburger. In 1661, Pufendorf became professor of natural law in the Calvinistic town of Heidelberg, where he wrote the present work, first published in 1667 under the pseudonym "Severini de Monzambano". The book was a critique of the old-fashioned constitution of the Holy Roman Empire. Pufendorf was suspected to be the author of the work and his position in Heidelberg therefore became somewhat insecure. Through his brother Esaias he was offered the chair of natural and public law at the University of Lund in Sweden. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Add. engr. t.-p., [22], 630, [30 (index)] pp.; 41 fold. plts., 11 plts.. 1671 Early Christian archaeology: the catacombs of Rome, described and illustrated here in a conveniently portable, indexed, abridged edition of Aringhi's Latin translation and reworking of Bosio's great work. Bosio was the first dedicated, scholarly explorer of subterranean Rome, and spent most of his life pursuing archaeological work in the catacombs; the resulting treatise Roma Sotteranea was first published in 1632, three years after his death. Aringhi's Latin version first appeared in 1651, with Aringhi adding anti-Semitic and anti-Protestant commentary not present in the original text. Present here are => a total of 53 plates including an added engraved title-page, an oversized map of the catacombs, 40 tipped-in folding plates largely depicting sarcophagi, and 11 plates showing catacomb interiors, tombs, decorations, etc. There are also numerous in-text representations of grave inscriptions and their motifs. Provenance: Front pastedown with bookplate of the Charles Holbrook Library, Pacific School of Religion (properly released); back pastedown with California bookseller's small ticket. Binding: Contemporary vellum, covers framed in gilt double fillets surrounding gilt-stamped book and castle motifs with cherubic supporters and foliate decorations, spine blind-tooled with castle decoration repeated. KIRCHER, ATHANASIUS – MATTEI, INNOCENTY (MATTEI, INNOCENZO)
Amsterdam, 1671 circa. Athanasius Kircher (Germania, Geisa 1602 – Roma, 1680) fu gesuita tedesco e monaco camaldolese. Educato a Fulda divenne voracemente curioso e coltivò i più svariati interessi, dagli studi filosofici e umanistici a quelli fisico matematici. [Click Below for Full Description]

GOUVEA, António de, S.J.
[Canton, Jesuit Press], 1671.. First Edition. Small folio (29 x 19 cm.), loose in multicolored patterned cloth, stitched in Chinese fashion, with what were probably the original plain paper wrappers used as paste-downs. Xylographic printing throughout, on native paper. Striking half-title in white on black, incorporating the Holy Initials and the instruments of the Passion within a sunburst. Text in Latin and Chinese. Light foxing. In very good to fine condition. (2), 43 double leaves folded at the fore-edge (unopened except for the second unnumbered double leaf). *** FIRST EDITION, rare. This is the third in a series of eleven books printed between 1662 and 1718 from xylographic blocks, in various cities of China, under Jesuit auspices. All books printed in China by the Jesuits are rare. Europeans were amazed that the Jesuits were able to produce books in Chinese; such books have attained both a mythic and mystic character, and are highly valued by collectors of books about the Far East in general and China in particular, as well as collectors of Jesuit material. This extraordinary document prints the text of an imperial rescript promulgated at Peking, regarding toleration for the Christian religion. It is printed in old, modern, and cursive Chinese characters, with phonetic transcriptions and a Latin translation. Also included are mathematical calculations and astronomical observations by the Jesuits that correct errors made by Chinese astronomers in their calculations for the calendar. Several references are made to the Jesuits' astronomical observatory in Peking (2v, 7 … [Click Below for Full Description]

TORRE FARFAN, Fernando de la.
Seville, En Casa de la Viuda de Nicolas Rodriguez, 1671.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Total of 20 engravings, some folding, many with emblems (see below). Double-rule borders on each page, with ample margins. (4 ll.), 343 pp., engraved title, 2 engraved portraits, 9 large folding engravings, 9 folio-size engravings. Folio (31.2 x 21.2 cm.), contemporary vellum (slightly soiled, repaired, recased, new endleaves). Crisp and clean, but the plate showing the Giralda with repairs, a bit crude, at upper portion at the fold, affecting the sky. Overall in good condition. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of the finest Spanish festival book of the seventeenth century. Hofer described it as "The best illustrated Iberian book, by all odds, contained in the Harvard Collection." It records the festivities connected with the canonization of D. Fernando III, for which elaborate decorations were made at the Cathedral of Seville, some of them by the important Sevillan artist Juan de Valdés Leal. The portrait of D. Fernando III was engraved from a design by Murillo. The title-page and the portrait of D. Carlos II are after Francisco Herrera. The large plates show several aspects of the exterior of the Cathedral of Seville, decorated for the occasion, as well as the main doorway, the high altar, etc. The smaller engravings, each divided into 4 sections, show emblems and devices. One of these was engraved by Lucas Baldes, age 11 ("Lucas Baldes F. de edad de 11 A's"). The plates were designed by Murillo and Velázquez, and engraved by Matías Arteaga. Fernando III (1199-1252) reigned as King of Castile fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

OGILBY, John.
London: printed for the Author, , 1671. Collected from most Authentick Authors, Augmented with later Observations, and Adorn'd with maps and Sculptures. Folio in sixes (410 x 270 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked to style with spine elaborately gilt in compartments, red morocco label, corners repaired. Engraved allegorical title page, 56 plates (comprising engraved title, 37 engraved plates, 2 folding, and 19 engraved maps, 3 folding), 66 engraved illustrations in the text, title printed in red and black. A little scuffing, new endpapers, some minor marginal tears with old professional repairs, but overall a very good copy. First edition, second issue. The third in Ogilby's series of "Atlases" intended eventually "to cover the whole world, to be funded through lotteries, subscription plans, and advertisements. The first, Africa, appeared in 1670. Others followed soon after: Atlas Japannensis (1670), America (1671), Atlas Chinensis (1671), and Asia (1673). These were not the fruits of Ogilby's own work but rather well-produced compilations of extant translations and others' accounts, a common practice at that time. His and others' work in this sense thus both reflected and directed growing public interest in distant places and foreign peoples" (ODNB). Ogilby was all but wiped out by the Great Fire, but refused to be defeated, as Aubrey described; "the generall and dreadfull conflagration burn't all that he had, that he was faine to begin the world again … [but] he had such an excellent inventive and prudentiall witt, and master of so good addresse, that when he wa … [Click Below for Full Description]
