John Ogilby
London, 1671. This fine, scarce engraving is from John Ogilby's "America: being the latest, and most accurate description of the New World . Collected from most authentick authors, augmented with later observations and adorn'd with maps and sculptures, by John Ogilby". This first edition work was published in London by Ogilby in 1671. This is the first English edition after Arnoldus Montanus's "De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld" to which Ogilby added a number of references to New England, New France, Maryland and Virginia. --- This edition is considered more desirable for these additional references as well because they were often some of the earliest views and thus more comprehensive. The work included one of the first views of New York City. It also included new material on the English colonies in North America supplied by the Propietors. It also included an important map of the Americas as well as early depictions of the Carolinas, Maryland, Jamaica, and Barbados. --- Ogilby's "America." dealt with important voyages and expeditions to the Americas, descriptions of Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, Bermuda, and North America, as well as South America and the Arctic region (referred to as the "Unknown South-Land"). The work also feature portraits of Columbus, Vesputius, Magellan and others. In addition, Ogilby included many plates dealing with facets of Indian life including games, festivals, occupations, habitations, and religion. --- John Ogilby (1600-1676) was in many trades in his life including dancing-master, courtier, theater owner, poet, translator, and publisher. Written during the reign of Edward IV [1442-1483] and first published around 1481, Littleton's Tenures is probably the most revered treatise in the history of the common law. Much admired for its learning and style, it is concerned with tenures and other issues relating to real property. This venerable work, which Coke called "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science," is considered a landmark because it renounced the principles of Roman law (and Latin) in favor of guidelines and doctrines drawn from the Year Books and, when necessary, hypothetical cases. [Click Below for Full Description]

ROUSSEAU, Jean Baptiste.
H.A. Grubbs, Jean-Baptiste Rousseau: his life and works, p. 226; not in Cioranescu; Tchemerzine. First edition of a collection of sacred songs in verse selected from his own works by Jean Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741), most of them based on psalms and a few on other biblical texts. Born in Paris, Rousseau published his Cantates françoises around 1705 and established a good reputation for his lyrics. His lampoons and some obscene verses supposedly written by him occasionally got him into trouble, but he had a promising career ahead of him when he published his Oeuvres in 1712. He lived there and elsewhere abroad for the rest of his life, sometimes publishing selections of his work, such as the present one, and returning to Paris only for a clandestine visit around the time he published the present collection. Although his poetry appears to have sold fairly well and his lyrics continued in demand with musicians, he remained in financial straits, his exile perhaps making it difficult to gain the patronage essential to success in that day. Rousseau gained greater fame posthumously, especially as the creator of the "French cantate" and is still considered the best French lyricist of the period. With the author's signed autograph presentation inscription to l'Abbé Cochard on an endleaf and a couple corrections in the text, also in his hand. With one quire slightly browned and further occasional minor foxing or a small marginal stain, but otherwise in very good condi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rebound in 20th c. plain brown calf. Engraved armorial bookplate of J. A. Picton, an antiquary and architect, on front pastedown. Minor worming in the bottom blank margin of first hundred leaves. At the bottom outer corner of the title pagein a contemporary hand is a manuscript note giving the price "1 pound, 5 shillings, 0 pence by way of subscription." This note I believe provides some new information that was not previously known, that this title was published by subscription. The first important study on the etymology of English words.
