BISSCHOP, JAN DE.
Amsterdam N. Visscher. 1671 and 1668 Quarto 12 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Full period vellum, upper board slightly cracked but holding. First work - engraved title by Gerard de Lairesse and 57 engraved plates. Second work - engraved title and 100 plates. Thus 2 engraved titles and 157 FINE ENGRAVED PLATES COMPLETE. Occasional marginal ink spots and one plate browned but a basically a reasonable or good copy. The plates were made after drawings by Carracci, Cigoli, Domenichino, Salviati, Arpinas, Michelangelo, and after the antique. - Some of the classical sculptures reproduced in Icones were from the 17th-century collections of G. Uylenburgh and H. Scholten. The sequence of the Icones adhered strictly to the classical tradition : first the individual parts of the body were illustrated (this section was left unfinished at de Bisschop's premature death), then complete figures, followed by poses and suggestions for compositions with more than one figure. The prints were intended to provide artists with examples of ideal poses. From the paintings of A. van der Werrff and N. Verkolje, it is clear just how influential these studies were in the development of Dutch classical painting during the late 17th century. (Ger Luijten) Jan de Bisschop, also known as Johannes Episcopius (1628-1671), was a lawyer, who became a Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver.

Picard, J. [F.]
- Paris, Académie des Sciences, 1671. Large folio (51.8 x 37.4 cm). 30 pp., title page with engraved vignette, four engraved plates, one engraved text figure and one leaf with allegorical endpiece. Beautiful contemporary style quarter calf over marbled boards, vellum corners. Spine rich gilt with floral pattern and title. Edges red.= The French astronomer and founding member of the Académie Royale des Sciences, Jean-Felix Picard (1620-1682) was the first person to measure the size of the Earth to a reasonable degree of accuracy in a survey conducted in 1669-70, the results of which are printed here. In fact, he was less than a half percent off, being 25 times more accurate than the previous record of accuracy set by Tycho Brahe: a remarkable effort indeed. To reach this goal, Picard modified and improved his equipment considerably. "In collaboration with Adrien Auzout he perfected the movable-wire micrometer . During the summer of 1667 he applied the astronomical telescope to the instruments used in making angular measurements" (DSB). His methods and means are clearly represented in this work and the instruments he used are figured in great detail. The French Academy of Sciences emphasized the importance of Picard's work by including it in their first publication. This copy is in the very rare first edition, being an extraordinary large folio edition presented to royals only and not offered for sale. A few spots to one plate, some small old marginal repairs, otherwise a very good, clean copy. DSB X, pp. 595-597. See also Houzeau & Lancaster, p. 225. Matte La Faveur, S.
- Montpelier, Daniel Pech, 1671 [1672]. Small 8vo (15.7 x 9.8 cm). [x], 360, 10 (explanatory leaves), [xxxii] pp. Engraved (armorial) frontispiece, 14 engraved plates on 12 large, folded leaves, one being a table of chemical symbols. Contemporary full calf. Spine with five raised bands, rich gilt compartments with floral vignettes and gilt title. Edges mottled red.= "Extremely rare" (Neville) complete copy, with all the plates, of a groundbreaking work on distillation by the self-taught French chemist Sébastien Matte La Faveur (1626-1714). According to Wikipedia, his discovery of styptic water and other important research merited him the position of Demonstrator of Chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier, a position created for him in 1675. He was the inventor of a lavender distillate, "the water of the Queen of Hungary", which became very popular in European courts. Perhaps as a consequence he became the private pharmacist of King Louis XIV and was awarded the privilege of teaching chemistry at the Sorbonne, and at the University of Montpellier. Later he became intendant of the chair of chemistry at the Jardin du Roi (1680 to 1684). This book is his most important work. Daniel Pech was perhaps merely the printer; the title page states that the work was sold by Matte La Faveur. Although the title page is dated 1671, the final print date is stated to be "le premier Fevrier 1672". The explanatory leaves are numbered 1-10, of which 1-2 have been moved to the first folded plate, between pp. 46-47. The first folded leaf contains the first three plates, a fact not not … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richardo Lower MD [Richard Lower]
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. This copy, in contemporary full leather binding, formed part of the Selbourne Library - acquired by the late Hugh Selbourne - and has the Selbourne Library stamp to the verso of the title page, and the bottom margin of p 51. The binding, with raised bands and title label is worn (particularly at the joints and edges) but sound. Page edges lightly marbled. Internally, there is a signature of Charles Singer to the fep and the remains of some pencil notes. Contents: 2 blanks; title page with Selbourne stamp to verso; dedication 8pp; List of Chapters 6pp; text (with decorative headpiece and initial capital on p1) 237 pp; finis; blank; 6 folding plates; 2 final blanks. The contents are in very good clean condition. The plates would benefit from being refolded, but, apart from a little offsetting, are in very good … [Click Below for Full Description]

With additional engraved title and engr. frontispiece to part 2 (lacking plates of Arabic characters); ornamental head bands and initials. 18th-century calf with gilt spine. All edges red. First edition. "Collated with a manuscript in the library of the Elector of Brandenburg, preface, geographical index, glossary, etc." (Lust). The gifted orientalist Andreas Müller (1630-94) compiled in a single volume this collection of travel accounts and information on China: Part I is an edition of a Berlin manuscript of Marco Polo, including comparisons with editions by Grynaeus (1532) and Ramusio (1559). Part II, often bound last, is an encyclopedia of China by Müller, listing "Chinese peculiarities" based on Chinese and oriental sources (cf. Löwendahl 153). Part III is a Latin version of "Historia orientalis" by the Armenian Hayton of Corycus (d. 1308). - According to Lach, Müller was "one of the most cosmopolitan of [...] world-conscious Europeans" of his time, although he never travelled outside of Europe. He fell out with Kircher over a linguistic issue, and when Chinese writing was described by theologians as a breach of the Second Commandment, his position in Berlin became untenable. Having resigned his position as provost of St. Nicolai in 1685, he relocated to Stettin and spent the remainder of his life with private studies. "By his own ways of publishing he much hampered the production of a bibliography of his works, which would cert … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PURCHAS, Samuel], John SANDERSON, Henry TIMBERLAKE and others.
Alden & Landis 678/140; Sabin 78871; STCN (6 copies); Tiele, Bibl. 955. First and only Dutch edition of an account of the voyages of three English merchant adventurers: John Sanderson in the Levant, Egypt and Constantinople (Istanbul), presented here as 1671-1676 but in fact describing travels in the years 1584-1602; Henry Timberlake in Jerusalem (1601); and the young John Smith in the Ottoman Empire (ca. 1598-1604) before his more famous voyage to America. All three are loosely translated from the relevant accounts in Purchas his pilgrimes, London, 1625, but the accounts of Sanderson and Timberlake are written in the first person. The present publisher added some texts from other sources, and the frontispiece and other illustrations, etched and engraved in a style sometimes reminiscent of Romein de Hooghe, are also new. Timberlake, though Protestant himself, shocked more narrow-minded Protestants by his accounts of the kindness of a Muslim Moor journeying from Fez to Mecca, who had joined his ship at Algiers and secured his release when he was arrested in Jerusalem. Slightly browned and with the title-page backed, apparently to strengthen it after a library stamp on the back was erased, minor and mostly marginal smudges or spots and a small marginal tear, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. Lacking the final blank leaf. The dedication was supposed to precede the publisher's note to the reader, but is here bound after it. The binding is rubbed and tattered, with most of the title-label gone. First Dutch edition of a fascinating account of English merc … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICHELET (Pierre);
[Click Below for Full Description]

BOCCHINI Bartolomeo

"Map of Villa Adriana deduced, as shown in the elegant cartouche, by the mysterious plan of Pirro Ligorio through the copy drawn up by Francesco Contini by order of Cardinal Francesco Barberini. Included in the book ""Latium, id est, nova et parallel Latii Veteris tum veteris novi descriptio"" - Amsterdam, 1671 - represents the first published map of the villa, after almost a century after the death of the architect of the Este. Recent studies have shown that there is no plan of Ligorio but that the relief and design are original work by Francesco Contini. Copper erngraving, small browing on blank margins, small ink spots, otherwise in good conditions." Daniele Elzeviro, 1671.
