Athanasius KIRCHER
Amsterdam, 1671. Incisione in rame, in buone condizioni. Taken from "Latium, id est, nova et parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi descriptio", published in Amsterdam in 1671. The work followed a long tradition of "chorography", but unlike works of his predecessors, which tended to be on the whole of Italy, Kircher¬ís book had as its focus the much more limited area of Latium itself. Kircher¬ís explanation of the purpose of this study was that he wanted to use the physical remains of ancient Latium to teach the reality of human mutability and transience. Etching, in good conditions. 450 350mm

Basilius Valentinus ( Basil Valentine )
Published in London in 1671, this is the reissue of the 1670 first edition with the cancel title page of this classic early work on Alchemy, there has been some question over the true authorship of the work, and it is thought that at least part of it was the work of Johann Tholde a Salt Manufacturer in Germany, whoever the author was, he had a considerable knowledge of Chemistry and showed that ammonia could be obtained by the action of alkali on sal-ammoniac (ammonium chloride), described the production of hydrochloric acid by acidifying brine of common salt (sodium chloride), and created oil of vitriol (sulfuric acid), among other achievements, the book is divided into three parts, each with its own title page, one of the parts is on the mineral Antimony, the book is bound in an old full leather binding which is heavily worn with some loss to spine and boards, front board attached but remains of hinge fragile, internally the given collation is 238, [8], 122 p. this copy appears to lack the final leaf of the preface, the main body of the text appears complete, but the opening text page of chapter one is numbered page 3, so there appears that there is also a leaf preceding the opening page of chapter one that is also not present, else the text to all three parts is complete along with the final unnumbered publishers advert leaf at rear, there is some noticeable worming to a number of pages, though this is all in the blank page margins and only touches a few letters of text, a few pages have some very old scholarly manuscript notes, some wear to front blank endpaper, else te … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leipzig, Literis Johannis-Erici Hahnii, (1671). 4:o. (56) s. Delvis lagerfläckig, mest i marginalerna. Häftad med gul ryggremsa. Dedikation från preses, d.v.s. Cyprian. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. VD17 12:000131C.

OGILBY, John
Amsterdam: Arnold Montanus, 1671. unbound. View. Copper plate engraving. Image measures 10.5 x 14". This view depicts the port of St. Augustine, one of the oldest cities in what would become the United States. First settled by the Spanish in 1565, the port became the northernmost base of operations for Spanish trade in the West Indies. Here, the city is shown in full swing, with ships and boats docked outside the city's walls, beyond which some buildings and a church are visible. In the foreground, slaves and Native Americans work and accompany a European woman to the coast. The view appeared in Montanus's "Die Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America." It is a dark impression in very good condition with no chips or tears. Stain to lower left corner of page, not affecting the image. German text below and on verso. Arnold Montanus (1625-1683) was a Dutch theologian, historian, author, and publisher best known for his encyclopedia of the New World, entitled "Die Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld." His travelogues, as well as the famous volume that developed out of them, were rich with geographical, cultural, and scientific information. John Ogilby (1600-1676) is often noted in the literature for his wide ranging pursuits--dancer, actor, translator, tutor, among others--that, more often than not, ended in failure. But rather than thinking of these pursuits as unsuccessful, they might be better considered as steps toward his ultimate destiny: cartography. Ogilby got his first taste of the trade in 1666--himself at the age of 66--by surveying and mapping London afte … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERRERA (Antonio de).
A Paris, chez Nicolas et Jean de la Coste, 1660-1671. - 3 volumes in-4. 14ff. 776pp. (i.e. 772). 12ff. + 12ff. 784pp. 14ff. + 9ff. 790pp. (i.e. 760). 6ff. Sabin, 31548. Palau, 114293. Boucher de la Richarderie, Bibliothèque Universelle des Voyages (1808), V, p.494. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
