Rare. OGILBY, John.
London: 1671 - Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Size: 36 x 29.5 cm. Very good condition; some light age toning of sheet; a tear to the bottom margin, not affecting the image. This fascinating copperplate engraving comes from a famous work originally published in Dutch by the trade diplomat Jan Nieuhoff, but translated into English by the British mapmaker and publisher John Ogilby. The images provide a document of early western contact with China and come from the account written by the diplomat Jan Nieuhoff who was the steward of the first Dutch trade Ambassadors to China. The Dutch East India Company was keen to persuade the Emperor to open up the Chinese ports to the Dutch, and Nieuhoff joined Pieter van Goyer and Jacob de Keyser on the mission to visit the Emperor Chun-Chi. The work includes many remarks on Chinese manners and customs, together with a second part comprising a general description of the Chinese Empire. The fine plates and illustrations show town views in China, Tibet and Tartary, together with subjects such as costumes and natural history. Atlas Chinensis is a superb work on China, noteworthy not only for text, bringing notice of the mysteries of the East to English readers, but for the magnificent engraved illustrations and plates.

ROUSSEAU, Jean Baptiste.
H.A. Grubbs, Jean-Baptiste Rousseau: his life and works, p. 226; not in Cioranescu; Tchemerzine. First edition of a collection of sacred songs in verse selected from his own works by Jean Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741), most of them based on psalms and a few on other biblical texts. Born in Paris, Rousseau published his Cantates françoises around 1705 and established a good reputation for his lyrics. His lampoons and some obscene verses supposedly written by him occasionally got him into trouble, but he had a promising career ahead of him when he published his Oeuvres in 1712. In that year, however, a dispute over offensive verses supposedly written by him forced him into exile in Brussels. He lived there and elsewhere abroad for the rest of his life, sometimes publishing selections of his work, such as the present one, and returning to Paris only for a clandestine visit around the time he published the present collection. Although his poetry appears to have sold fairly well and his lyrics continued in demand with musicians, he remained in financial straits, his exile perhaps making it difficult to gain the patronage essential to success in that day. Rousseau gained greater fame posthumously, especially as the creator of the "French cantate" and is still considered the best French lyricist of the period. With the author's signed autograph presentation inscription to l'Abbé Cochard on an endleaf and a couple corrections in the text, also in his hand. With one quire slightly browned and further occasional minor foxing or a small marginal stain, but otherwise in very good condi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Picard, J. [F.]
Paris, Académie des Sciences, 1671. Large folio (51.8 x 37.4 cm). 30 pp., title page with engraved vignette, four engraved plates, one engraved text figure and one leaf with allegorical endpiece. Beautiful contemporary style quarter calf over marbled boards, vellum corners. Spine rich gilt with floral pattern and title. Edges red.= The French astronomer and founding member of the Académie Royale des Sciences, Jean-Felix Picard (1620-1682) was the first person to measure the size of the Earth to a reasonable degree of accuracy in a survey conducted in 1669-1670, the results of which are printed here. In fact, he was less than a half percent off, being 25 times more accurate than the previous record of accuracy set by Tycho Brahe: a remarkable effort indeed. To reach this goal, Picard modified and improved his equipment considerably. "In collaboration with Adrien Auzout he perfected the movable-wire micrometer . During the summer of 1667 he applied the astronomical telescope to the instruments used in making angular measurements" (DSB). His methods and means are clearly represented in this work and the instruments he used are figured in great detail. The French Academy of Sciences emphasized the importance of Picard's work by including it in their first publication. This copy is in the very rare first edition, being an extraordinary large folio edition presented to royals only and not offered for sale. A few spots to one plate, some small old marginal repairs, otherwise a very good, clean copy. DSB X, pp. 595-597. See also Houzeau & Lancaster, p. 225. London 1671. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Size: 30 x 22 cm. (12 x 8½ inches) Very good condition; some light age toning of sheet and slight foxing, not affecting the image.

Gouvea, Antonio de (attributed), 1592-1677
Quam tum [Canton] : Jesuit Press, 1671. First Edition. Small folio, contemporary Chinese wrappers (detached); woodblock title page featuring the Holy Initials and the instruments of the Passion within a sunburst; ff [ii], 43; printed xylographically on one side of the sheet only, on double rice paper folded at the fore-edge in the Chinese style; text in Latin and Chinese; a fine copy housed in a custom-made clamshell box of full crushed morocco lettered in gilt. Although the Jesuits had brought a printing press with movable types to Macau as early as 1588, only a few works were printed on it prior to the press being transferred to Nagasaki in 1590. From this date the Jesuit missionaries in China reverted to the use of xylographic (woodblock) printing. Between 1662 and 1718 a total of eleven books were printed using xylographic blocks in various locations in China under the auspices of the Jesuit missionaries. Innocentia Victrix was the third such book to be printed in this period. It contains, in three Chinese scripts (old, modern and cursive) with phonetic transcription and Latin translation, the copy of the imperial edict of the young Emperor Kangxi recording official tolerance of the Christian religion, as well as astronomical observations and calculations made by the Jesuit fathers at their observatory in Peking. During this period there was much opposition to the presence of the Jesuits in China, as it was commonly feared that the missionaries would create a foothold for an attempted takeover by the Portuguese. It was not only their religion that was treated with sus … [Click Below for Full Description]
