CHERUBIN d'Orléans, Capuchin.
Paris: Thomas Jolly and Simon Benard, 1671. First edition. Exceptional copy in contemporary red morocco of “the most exhaustive treatise on lens making in the seventeenth century. It is a six-hundred folio page long, comprehensive, cogently-argued treatise on telescope making. It contains an impressive amount of theoretical and practical, first-hand information on all of its facets — from explanations of the telescope's working principles, to descriptions of lens grinding and polishing, to rules for the right distances between lenses, to methods to find the right apertures, to descriptions of the shapes and articulations of the wooden parts and bolts and screws needed to properly point a telescope to the skies, to the construction of tubes, and so on and so forth.” (Albert et al, The origins of the telescope, pp. 289-291).

“The first, shorter part of the book is devoted to the theory of vision, including the optical properties of the main parts of the eye. It follows Kepler's account but complements it with views taken from the Jesuit Christopher Scheiner's Oculus (1619) and Rosa ursine (1632). The second part, which dedicates more than one hundred pages to the theory of the telescope, pervasively shows the deep influence of Kepler's Dioptrice. The basic notions and axioms come from Kepler, including the approximate refraction law for angles of incidence no greater than 30º … (pp. 8 & 25). To Kepler's results about the focus of convex lenses and meniscus, d'Orleans ad … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marco Polo

ROUSSEAU, Jean Baptiste.
1671. H.A. Grubbs, Jean-Baptiste Rousseau: his life and works, p. 226; not in Cioranescu; Tchemerzine. First edition of a collection of sacred songs in verse selected from his own works by Jean Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741), most of them based on psalms and a few on other biblical texts. Born in Paris, Rousseau published his Cantates françoises around 1705 and established a good reputation for his lyrics. His lampoons and some obscene verses supposedly written by him occasionally got him into trouble, but he had a promising career ahead of him when he published his Oeuvres in 1712. In that year, however, a dispute over offensive verses supposedly written by him forced him into exile in Brussels. He lived there and elsewhere abroad for the rest of his life, sometimes publishing selections of his work, such as the present one, and returning to Paris only for a clandestine visit around the time he published the present collection. Although his poetry appears to have sold fairly well and his lyrics continued in demand with musicians, he remained in financial straits, his exile perhaps making it difficult to gain the patronage essential to success in that day. Rousseau gained greater fame posthumously, especially as the creator of the "French cantate" and is still considered the best French lyricist of the period. With the author's signed autograph presentation inscription to l'Abbé Cochard on an endleaf and a couple corrections in the text, also in his hand. With one quire slightly browned and further occasional minor foxing or a small marginal stain, but otherwise in very good … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

Athanasius Kircher 1602-1680
- Amstelodami, apud Joannem Janssonium ˆ Waesberge, & h¾redes Eliz¾i Weyerstraet. 1671 . Folio *4, **4, ***6, (*)2, A-Xxxx4 Second Enlarged edition Bound in contemporary calf. KircherÕs Major Scientific Work and his Principal Contribution to Optics"In Ars magna lucis et umbrae Kircher discusses the sources of light and shadow. The work deals especially with the sun, moon, stars and planets. Kircher also treats phenomena related to light, such as optical illusions, color and refraction, projection and distortion, comets, eclipses, and instruments that use light, such as sundials and mirrors. He theorizes about the type of mirror supposed to have been used by Archimedes to set Roman ships afire, drawing from notes of his own experiments performed in the harbor of Syracuse. The work includes one of the first treatises on phosphorous and fireflies. Here Kircher also published his depictions of Saturn and Jupiter as he saw them through a telescope in Bologna in 1643. On that occasion he observed that the planets were neither perfectly round nor self-luminous, contrary to the popular Aristotelian belief that they are perfect, unchanging spheres."Kircher takes a great interest in sundials and mirrors in this book, and several interesting engravings are of fanciful sundials. He had written extensively on these subjects on his previous work, the Primitiae gnomonicae catoptricae. In Ars magna lucis et umbrae Kircher also discusses an odd ancestor of the modern projector: a device called the 'magic lantern,' of which he is generally, though erroneously, considered the inventor. MONTANUS, Arnoldus.
Amsterdam Jacob Meurs, 1671. Folio (30.5 x 19.4 cm). Engraved allegorical title (small repair along fore-margin), letterpress title printed in black and red with vignette. Folding engraved general map of America, 47 double-page engraved plates (7 folding, including 15 maps, the remaining 32 mostly comprising town views), 7 portraits and 69 text engravings (a little browned and spotted). Modern binding of early vellum manuscript waste, a very good example. First edition of "a classic book on America and is much sought after by collectors of Americana as it contains, on p. 124, one of the first views of New York Novum Amsterodamum" (Borba de Moraes). The text engraving on p. 213 shows the crowning of Sir Francis Drake by the California Native Americans. This monumental work by the Dutch writer Arnoldus Montanus (1625?-83) reflects the fascination of seventeenth century Europe with the New World. Montanus was a Protestant minister and headmaster of the Latin School in the town of Schoonhoven. He wrote books on church history, theology, the history of the Low Countries, and the peoples and cultures of the Americas. Montanus never visited the New World and his work contains numerous errors and fantastic conceptions about the people and animals of the Americas. Nonetheless, it became a standard work in Europe and was widely read for many years. The publisher of the work was the Amsterdam bookseller and engraver Jacob van Meurs, who was active from 1651 to 1680 and specialized in works of history, geography, and travelogues. The book is lavishly illustrated with 125 copper engravi … [Click Below for Full Description]
