Nuremberg, widow & heirs of Paul Fürst, 1671. 2 parts in 1 volume. Small folio. I: Engraved allegorical title by H[ans] Troschel depicting three muses (geometry, optics & arithmetic) in front of an ornate Renaissance palace symbolizing perspective, 75+[1 blank]p text, [1] double-page engraved plate of fencing tournament, [6] engraved folding plates (with 100 numbered illustrations of optical diagrams), [1] double-page folding table, 5 numbered engraved plates ; II: Engraved title within architectural border incorporating scientific instruments and emblems of shaded objects + [2]p of preface to reader + text pp77 - 124 (pp115-116 misbound), [3] folding engraved plates (comprising diagrams numbered 101-139) illustrating principles of shade, [2] folding engraved plates (with XXX diagrams on perspective). Antique style boards. One of the most influential treatises on perspective published in 17th century Germany. The Nuremberg mathematician and engineer Albrecht (1586-1628) interprets the theories of earlier German writers in the light of new mathematical discoveries. His work is divided into general optics and the principle of shade; it was first published in 1623. An especially noteworthy feature of this volume is the striking double-page plate of a fencing tournament taking place in the courtyard of the Heilsbronner Hof at Nuremberg, a purpose-built playhouse consisting of two elongated tall inn buildings and an annex with a chapel, constructed at an angle; martial games are seen in progress watched by large crowds of onlookers both from inside the yard and from the galleries, balconies, windows and rooftops of the surrounding buildings. Originally a Cistercian accounts house, the Heilsbronner Hof , was rebuilt as a venue for entertainment after the dissolution of the monasteries, and became one of the most popular playhouses in Germany. ‘Englische Komoedianten’ (English actors) are recorded to have performed there ‘with great success’ in 1612 and 1613 : ‘ On Sunday, 27th June and a few days following thereon, with the gracious permission of the Honourable Council, the Elector of Brandenburg’s servants and English comoedians have acted and held beautiful comedies and tragedies of Philole and Mariane, also of Celide and Sedea, also of the destruction of the city of Troy, and city of Constantinople, of the Turk, and other such histories, besides graceful dancing, lovely music, and other entertainments, here in the Heilsbronn Court ’ (J. Chr. Siebenkees: Materialien zur Nürnberger Geschichte. Nuremberg,1792-5, vol.3, pp52 & 54) & Ernest Brennecke, Shakespeare in Germany 1590-1700 (1964), p.87. The building was demolished in 1784. English wandering players provided the dominant form of theatrical entertainment in Germany during this period. The first German theatre was built at Nuremberg in 1550 (Devrient: Geschichte der deutschen Schauspielkunst (Leipzig 1848). For the artist Hans Troschel (1585-1623), see Thieme Becker XXXIII, 429-30. Five full-page plates include a view of the interior of a hall in a German patrician’s house and four illustrations of military interest: the fortifications of the town of Schwenningen in southern Germany, the layout of a gun emplacement with canon being fired protected by stockades, and the respective layouts of the fortresses of Wachtendonk (near the German-Dutch border, the scene of a famous siege in 1588 (dated 1607), and of Uttenheim on the border with France (dated 1618 – the fortress was renamed ‘Philippsburg’ in 1623). Occasional light toning in outer margins, a few small repairs without loss, minor traces of usage, otherwise in good condition. Berlin Katalog 4710; VD17, 12 : 162575Y; Fowler 17 lists a Latin edition of the same year; for the author, see also Thieme-Becker I,231. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

As Wallace notes, this work, originally published in 1649, is "frequently interesting as showing in a positive and plainly authentic form the rudimentary shape of the present.developed chancery system of England; and as illustrating, by instances, that singular constitution of jurisprudence peculiar to Great Britain and the United States of America, by which a copious, precise, and most artificial system of law is spun out, gradually, from a small expression of natural justice, and with scrupulous respect for existing law, by the safe and constantly improving process of judicial interpretation." A third edition was published in 1671. It was also reissued in 1820 and 1872. Wallace, The Reporters 475. English Short-Title Catalogue R38811. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - Grenoble: P. Charvvs, 1671, 12°, (6), 135, (1), (5), pp., contemporary sheep, spine gilt; fresh and bright, a fine copy. Chinese & Japanese Ground Breaking Medical Text ! - - First edition of an exceptionally rare book, it is "the first Western book on Chinese medicine, with a few brief comments on Japanese methods. This anonymous collection of translations of early Chinese texts on pulse medicine has been variously attributed to different Jesuits working in China at the time." Garrison & Morton - - This work gives the first account in the West of the Chinese theory of pulses and of the theory and practice of acupuncture. The text appears to be a Compilation of Chinese texts translated or summarized and seems to be a partial source for the two books generally credited with giving the first Western accounts of Chinese medicine: Andreas Cleyer's Specimen Medicinae Sinicae (Frankfurt: 1682) and Michal Piotr Boym's Clavis Medica ad Chinarum doctrinam de pulsibus (Nuremberg: 1686). - - The authorship of this book is not known. The Wellcome and NLM catalogues site the following as authors, or possible authors, while noting the reservations of Grmek: Louis-Augustin Alemand (1643-1728), Michel Boym (1612-59), and Julien Placide Flervieu (1671-1746), but dates alone rule out all three. The author, a Jesuit, States that he is writing from Canton in 1668, having been ejected from Peking along with his fellow Christians. M.D. - - Grmek, in "Les Reflets de la Sphygmologie chinoise dans la Medecine occidentale," Biologie medicale, Vol. 51 (1962), pp. lix-lxiii proposes as possible candidates the Jesuit fathers Jean Valat, Adrien Greslon, Humbert Augery, Jacques Le Favre, Claude and Jacques Motal and Philippe Couplet. However there is no convincing evidence for any attribution. - - During the last third party of the 17th century, the first monographs written by Westerners on the theoretical and practical aspects of the pulse diagnosis in Chinese medicine are published in Europe. Their influence was important as for the interest and for the knowledge about the far eastern practices of health in West. The first one of these books, a work written in French, entitled Les Secrets de la Médecine des Chinois consistant en la parfaite connaissance du Pouls , published in 1671, was initially awarded, by mistake, to Louis Augustine ALLEMAND. Historians and sinologists wondered a long time about the real author and about the precise Chinese sources of this treatise of sphygmology. - - No copy of this book is located by OCLC in the U.S. (although there is a copy at NLM). - - "Brown is the first institution in the Northeast to hold a copy and one of only seven institutions worldwide." Brown University Library (2011) - - Garrison-Morton 6491.9; Krivatsy 10856. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Map of Villa Adriana deduced, as shown in the elegant cartouche, by the mysterious plan of Pirro Ligorio through the copy drawn up by Francesco Contini by order of Cardinal Francesco Barberini. Included in the book ""Latium, id est, nova et parallel Latii Veteris tum veteris novi descriptio"" - Amsterdam, 1671 - represents the first published map of the villa, after almost a century after the death of the architect of the Este. Recent studies have shown that there is no plan of Ligorio but that the relief and design are original work by Francesco Contini.         Polydori Vergilii Urbinatis DE RERUM INVENTORIBUS LIBRI VIII ET DE PRODIGIIS LIBRI III cum indicibus locupletissimis

Daniele Elzeviro, 1671.

Perli Bertani, 1671. - Perli Bertani, In Venetia 1671, in - 4 (16x22,8cm), (8) 747pp. Velina Full time flessibile. Torna ai nervi giansenista. Titolo in penna nera.

Incisione in rame, in buone condizioni. Misure: 445x340 ogni foglio" "A beatufiul topographical map, on 3 sheets, of Frascati - anciently called Civitas Tusculum - and its villas, which were built from the 16th century onwards by Popes, cardinals and Roman nobles as ""status symbols"" of Roman aristocracy. These country houses were designed for social activities rather than farming. Taken from ""Latium, id est, nova et parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi descriptio"", published in Amsterdam in 1671. The work followed a long tradition of "chorography"", but unlike works of his predecessors, which tended to be on the whole of Italy, Kircher's book had as its focus the much more limited area of Latium itself. Kircher's explanation of the purpose of this study was that he wanted to use the physical remains of ancient Latium to teach the reality of human mutability and transience.

Berlin, Georg Schultz, 1671. - 4to. 3 parts in one volume. (6), 26, (16), 167, (51) pp. (8), 115, (13) pp. (4), 107, (9) pp. Letterpress title printed in red and black. With additional engraved title and engr. frontispiece to part 2 (lacking plates of Arabic characters); ornamental head bands and initials. 18th-century calf with gilt spine. All edges red. First edition. "Collated with a manuscript in the library of the Elector of Brandenburg, preface, geographical index, glossary, etc." (Lust). The gifted orientalist Andreas Müller (1630-94) compiled in a single volume this collection of travel accounts and information on China: Part I is an edition of a Berlin manuscript of Marco Polo, including comparisons with editions by Grynaeus (1532) and Ramusio (1559). Part II, often bound last, is an encyclopedia of China by Müller, listing "Chinese peculiarities" based on Chinese and oriental sources (cf. Löwendahl 153). Part III is a Latin version of "Historia orientalis" by the Armenian Hayton of Corycus (d. 1308). - According to Lach, Müller was "one of the most cosmopolitan of [.] world-conscious Europeans" of his time, although he never travelled outside of Europe. He fell out with Kircher over a linguistic issue, and when Chinese writing was described by theologians as a breach of the Second Commandment, his position in Berlin became untenable. Having resigned his position as provost of St. Nicolai in 1685, he relocated to Stettin and spent the remainder of his life with private studies. "By his own ways of publishing he much hampered the production of a bibliography of his works, which would certainly warrant scrutiny. Before his death he destroyed his manuscripts. He negotiated over the sale of his library with numerous universities, but finally, on a whim, gave away a mere 50 books to the Stargard Consistorium in 1692; most of his books and the remainder of his papers he willed to St. Mary's collegiate church in Stettin" (cf. ADB XXII, 513f.). - Some browning and spotting throughout. Still a fine copy from the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Château de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown; latterly in the library of Jean R. La Versification françoise ou l'art de bien faire et tourner les vers « a vu le jour en 1671 et a été fort lu. Frommer Christen Betendes Hertz und Singender Mund: Oder Vielvermehrtes Altdorffisches Bet- und Gesang-Büchlein. Darinnen Herrn D. Mart. Lutheri und anderer Gottseeliger Lehrer Andächtige Gebet und Geistreiche Lieder ... zu gebrauchen ... Mit einer Vorrede Herrn Johann Weinmanns der H. Schrifft Doctors Professors und Predigers zu Altdorff. Anjetzo mit gröberer Schrifft vielen schönen Gebeten Reimen Liedern und Kupffern gezieret [Sebastian Göbel].

Nürnberg: In Verlegung Christoph Endters 12mo (15 cm; 6"). [2], [10] ff., 456 pp., 12 plts.. 1671 This contemporary Baroque brass repoussé, chased, and engraved binding surrounds the third edition of Goebel and Weinmann's Altdorf prayer and song book (with some sermons), which was preceded by editions in 1663 and 1666. The songs are without the music. The double-page added engraved title-page and the twelve plates are unsigned but exquisitely accomplished. => The text appears not to be held in any U.S. library. Binding: Elaborately embellished hinged brass panels compose the spine and both covers; all three are deeply bordered with scrolling foliage within double “rules.” The central ornamentation of the front cover is composed of a Baldachino-like canopy above an applied repoussé figure on a pedestal representing Faith with her cross and chalice; the rear cover is composed of the same border, pedestal, and canopy framing Charity with her children. The spine panel offers a filigree appliqué at bottom and a cherub as its central ornament; two wide clasps at the fore-edge also incorporate cherubs; and additional small decorative panels affixed at the spine ends protect and embellish the hinges top and bottom. All edges are gilt and gauffered. Provenance: Ex–John Howell Collection of the Pacific School of Religion. Bound as above, the whole very solid and strong. Spine with small nails or brads visible to help secure text block, and almost certainly with a second filigree appliqué lost; covers with small piercings that may have to do with binding security or may be evidence of once-attached elements now lost although the design as-is does not seem "incomplete." Later endpapers over original ones, one old endpaper with old inked jottings; bookseller's label of John Howell, no library markings. One section of textblock slightly extruded. => A wonderful example of a Baroque-era, highly decorative metal binding.

Possibly VD17 23:686483U and VD17 23:686485K, respectively, which probably were published together. "Pacifici a Lapide" is a pseudonym for the legal scientist Philipp Andreas Oldenburger. In 1661, Pufendorf became professor of natural law in the Calvinistic town of Heidelberg, where he wrote the present work, first published in 1667 under the pseudonym "Severini de Monzambano". The book was a critique of the old-fashioned constitution of the Holy Roman Empire. Pufendorf was suspected to be the author of the work and his position in Heidelberg therefore became somewhat insecure. Through his brother Esaias he was offered the chair of natural and public law at the University of Lund in Sweden. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Roma subterranea novissima, in qua antiqua christianorum et praecipue martyrum coemeteria, tituli, monimenta, epitaphia, inscriptiones, ac nobiliora sanctorum sepulchra...

Arnhemiae: Apud Joan. Fridericum Hagium 12mo (13.3 cm, 5.25"). Add. engr. t.-p., [22], 630, [30 (index)] pp.; 41 fold. plts., 11 plts.. 1671 Early Christian archaeology: the catacombs of Rome, described and illustrated here in a conveniently portable, indexed, abridged edition of Aringhi's Latin translation and reworking of Bosio's great work. Bosio was the first dedicated, scholarly explorer of subterranean Rome, and spent most of his life pursuing archaeological work in the catacombs; the resulting treatise Roma Sotteranea was first published in 1632, three years after his death. Aringhi's Latin version first appeared in 1651, with Aringhi adding anti-Semitic and anti-Protestant commentary not present in the original text. Present here are => a total of 53 plates including an added engraved title-page, an oversized map of the catacombs, 40 tipped-in folding plates largely depicting sarcophagi, and 11 plates showing catacomb interiors, tombs, decorations, etc. There are also numerous in-text representations of grave inscriptions and their motifs. Provenance: Front pastedown with bookplate of the Charles Holbrook Library, Pacific School of Religion (properly released); back pastedown with California bookseller's small ticket. Binding: Contemporary vellum, covers framed in gilt double fillets surrounding gilt-stamped book and castle motifs with cherubic supporters and foliate decorations, spine blind-tooled with castle decoration repeated. Binding as above, front cover scraped with design all but completely effaced, front joint partially cracked, ties now lacking, spine darkened with lighter area where once was a paper shelving label (?) and with short crack at foot. Bookplate and ticket as above; front free endpaper and title-page rubber-stamped; back pastedown with affixed pencil-labelled corner pocket for card. First oversized folding plate with old repair along part of inner margin; one plate partially split at fold. One page with small ink drip in outer margin, touching but not obscuring one letter. Occasional small edge chips; a few lower outer corners torn away. => Evidently read and consulted (index of plates with pencilled tick marks), still eminently worthy of study, and a text with noteworthy, engaging illustrations.
