"Map of Villa Adriana deduced, as shown in the elegant cartouche, by the mysterious plan of Pirro Ligorio through the copy drawn up by Francesco Contini by order of Cardinal Francesco Barberini. Included in the book ""Latium, id est, nova et parallel Latii Veteris tum veteris novi descriptio"" - Amsterdam, 1671 - represents the first published map of the villa, after almost a century after the death of the architect of the Este. Recent studies have shown that there is no plan of Ligorio but that the relief and design are original work by Francesco Contini. Copper erngraving, small browing on blank margins, small ink spots, otherwise in good conditions."         Polydori Vergilii Urbinatis DE RERUM INVENTORIBUS LIBRI VIII ET DE PRODIGIIS LIBRI III cum indicibus locupletissimis

Daniele Elzeviro, 1671.

        Relationi universali

Perli Bertani, 1671. - Perli Bertani, In Venetia 1671, in - 4 (16x22,8cm), (8) 747pp. Velina Full time flessibile. Torna ai nervi giansenista. Titolo in penna nera.

Incisione in rame, in buone condizioni. Misure: 445x340 ogni foglio" "A beatufiul topographical map, on 3 sheets, of Frascati - anciently called Civitas Tusculum - and its villas, which were built from the 16th century onwards by Popes, cardinals and Roman nobles as ""status symbols"" of Roman aristocracy. These country houses were designed for social activities rather than farming. Taken from ""Latium, id est, nova et parallela Latii tum veteris tum novi descriptio"", published in Amsterdam in 1671. The work followed a long tradition of "chorography"", but unlike works of his predecessors, which tended to be on the whole of Italy, Kircher's book had as its focus the much more limited area of Latium itself. Kircher's explanation of the purpose of this study was that he wanted to use the physical remains of ancient Latium to teach the reality of human mutability and transience.

Frommer Christen Betendes Hertz und Singender Mund: Oder Vielvermehrtes Altdorffisches Bet- und Gesang-Büchlein. Darinnen Herrn D. Mart. Lutheri und anderer Gottseeliger Lehrer Andächtige Gebet und Geistreiche Lieder ... zu gebrauchen ... Mit einer Vorrede Herrn Johann Weinmanns der H. Schrifft Doctors Professors und Predigers zu Altdorff. Anjetzo mit gröberer Schrifft vielen schönen Gebeten Reimen Liedern und Kupffern gezieret [Sebastian Göbel].

Nürnberg: In Verlegung Christoph Endters 12mo (15 cm; 6"). [2], [10] ff., 456 pp., 12 plts.. 1671 This contemporary Baroque brass repoussé, chased, and engraved binding surrounds the third edition of Goebel and Weinmann's Altdorf prayer and song book (with some sermons), which was preceded by editions in 1663 and 1666. The songs are without the music. The double-page added engraved title-page and the twelve plates are unsigned but exquisitely accomplished. => The text appears not to be held in any U.S. library. Binding: Elaborately embellished hinged brass panels compose the spine and both covers; all three are deeply bordered with scrolling foliage within double “rules.” The central ornamentation of the front cover is composed of a Baldachino-like canopy above an applied repoussé figure on a pedestal representing Faith with her cross and chalice; the rear cover is composed of the same border, pedestal, and canopy framing Charity with her children. The spine panel offers a filigree appliqué at bottom and a cherub as its central ornament; two wide clasps at the fore-edge also incorporate cherubs; and additional small decorative panels affixed at the spine ends protect and embellish the hinges top and bottom. All edges are gilt and gauffered. Provenance: Ex–John Howell Collection of the Pacific School of Religion. Bound as above, the whole very solid and strong. Spine with small nails or brads visible to help secure text block, and almost certainly with a second filigree appliqué lost; covers with small piercings that may have to do with binding security or may be evidence of once-attached elements now lost although the design as-is does not seem "incomplete." Later endpapers over original ones, one old endpaper with old inked jottings; bookseller's label of John Howell, no library markings. One section of textblock slightly extruded. => A wonderful example of a Baroque-era, highly decorative metal binding.

Possibly VD17 23:686483U and VD17 23:686485K, respectively, which probably were published together. "Pacifici a Lapide" is a pseudonym for the legal scientist Philipp Andreas Oldenburger. In 1661, Pufendorf became professor of natural law in the Calvinistic town of Heidelberg, where he wrote the present work, first published in 1667 under the pseudonym "Severini de Monzambano". The book was a critique of the old-fashioned constitution of the Holy Roman Empire. Pufendorf was suspected to be the author of the work and his position in Heidelberg therefore became somewhat insecure. Through his brother Esaias he was offered the chair of natural and public law at the University of Lund in Sweden. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Roma subterranea novissima, in qua antiqua christianorum et praecipue martyrum coemeteria, tituli, monimenta, epitaphia, inscriptiones, ac nobiliora sanctorum sepulchra...

Arnhemiae: Apud Joan. Fridericum Hagium 12mo (13.3 cm, 5.25"). Add. engr. t.-p., [22], 630, [30 (index)] pp.; 41 fold. plts., 11 plts.. 1671 Early Christian archaeology: the catacombs of Rome, described and illustrated here in a conveniently portable, indexed, abridged edition of Aringhi's Latin translation and reworking of Bosio's great work. Bosio was the first dedicated, scholarly explorer of subterranean Rome, and spent most of his life pursuing archaeological work in the catacombs; the resulting treatise Roma Sotteranea was first published in 1632, three years after his death. Aringhi's Latin version first appeared in 1651, with Aringhi adding anti-Semitic and anti-Protestant commentary not present in the original text. Present here are => a total of 53 plates including an added engraved title-page, an oversized map of the catacombs, 40 tipped-in folding plates largely depicting sarcophagi, and 11 plates showing catacomb interiors, tombs, decorations, etc. There are also numerous in-text representations of grave inscriptions and their motifs. Provenance: Front pastedown with bookplate of the Charles Holbrook Library, Pacific School of Religion (properly released); back pastedown with California bookseller's small ticket. Binding: Contemporary vellum, covers framed in gilt double fillets surrounding gilt-stamped book and castle motifs with cherubic supporters and foliate decorations, spine blind-tooled with castle decoration repeated. Binding as above, front cover scraped with design all but completely effaced, front joint partially cracked, ties now lacking, spine darkened with lighter area where once was a paper shelving label (?) and with short crack at foot. Bookplate and ticket as above; front free endpaper and title-page rubber-stamped; back pastedown with affixed pencil-labelled corner pocket for card. First oversized folding plate with old repair along part of inner margin; one plate partially split at fold. One page with small ink drip in outer margin, touching but not obscuring one letter. Occasional small edge chips; a few lower outer corners torn away. => Evidently read and consulted (index of plates with pencilled tick marks), still eminently worthy of study, and a text with noteworthy, engaging illustrations.

Nova & Exacta Corographia Latii sive Territori Romani. Iuxta veterem et novum Situm: parallela nominum comparatione elaborata. Studio et opera Authoris, & P. Innocenty Mattei Monachi Camaldulensis.

      - Amsterdam, 1671 circa. Athanasius Kircher (Germania, Geisa 1602 – Roma, 1680) fu gesuita tedesco e monaco camaldolese. Educato a Fulda divenne voracemente curioso e coltivò i più svariati interessi, dagli studi filosofici e umanistici a quelli fisico matematici.

FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Folio (31.2 x 21.2 cm.), contemporary vellum (slightly soiled, repaired, recased, new endleaves). Total of 20 engravings, some folding, many with emblems (see below). Double-rule borders on each page, with ample margins. Crisp and clean, but the plate showing the Giralda with repairs, a bit crude, at upper portion at the fold, affecting the sky. Overall in good condition. (4 ll.), 343 pp., engraved title, 2 engraved portraits, 9 large folding engravings, 9 folio-size engravings. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of the finest Spanish festival book of the seventeenth century. Hofer described it as "The best illustrated Iberian book, by all odds, contained in the Harvard Collection." It records the festivities connected with the canonization of D. Fernando III, for which elaborate decorations were made at the Cathedral of Seville, some of them by the important Sevillan artist Juan de Valdés Leal. The portrait of D. Fernando III was engraved from a design by Murillo. The title-page and the portrait of D. Carlos II are after Francisco Herrera. The large plates show several aspects of the exterior of the Cathedral of Seville, decorated for the occasion, as well as the main doorway, the high altar, etc. The smaller engravings, each divided into 4 sections, show emblems and devices. One of these was engraved by Lucas Baldes, age 11 ("Lucas Baldes F. de edad de 11 A's"). The plates were designed by Murillo and Velázquez, and engraved by Matías Arteaga. Fernando III (1199-1252) reigned as King of Castile from 1217, King of León from 1230, and King of Galicia from 1231, securing the permanent union of the crowns of Castile and León. He annexed Seville and Córdoba back to Spain - the most substantial territorial gains to that point in the Reconquista. Fernando died in Seville and was buried in the cathedral there by his son and successor, D. Alfonso X (el Sabio). He lies in a gold-and-crystal casket through which his face can still be seen. Fernando III was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X, and has since been known as Fernando el Santo, San Fernando, or San Fernando Rey. *** Palau 335597. Hofer 86. Praz 397.

Cat. Rasi 299 e Michel-Michel I, 178 (solo per il ''Trionfo''). BMC, XVII sec. I, 120-1 (la ''Corona macheronica'', con data 1660?). Cat. Vinciana (3061 e segg.), Gay (III, 923-4) e Cat. Libri (1657-1660) registrano altre ediz. DBI.XI, pp. 81-3.         America; being the latest and most Accurate Description of the New World Â…

London: printed for the Author, , 1671. Collected from most Authentick Authors, Augmented with later Observations, and Adorn'd with maps and Sculptures. Folio in sixes (410 × 270 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked to style with spine elaborately gilt in compartments, red morocco label, corners repaired. Engraved allegorical title page, 56 plates (comprising engraved title, 37 engraved plates, 2 folding, and 19 engraved maps, 3 folding), 66 engraved illustrations in the text, title printed in red and black. A little scuffing, new endpapers, some minor marginal tears with old professional repairs, but overall a very good copy. First edition. The second in Ogilby's series which also included Africa, Asia, and Britannia, the book is a well-produced compilation of extant translations and others' accounts, a common practice at that time. The bulk of Ogilby's America is taken from Arnoldus Montanus's De Nieuwe en Onbekeende Weereld, published at Amsterdam the same year, supplemented with information on New England, New France, Maryland, and Virginia supplied to Ogilby by the proprietors of these colonies. There are two issues of the book. The first had Dutch maps and views, replaced in the second issue by a number of important maps drafted from English materials. The list of plates calls for two maps omitted from this issue; the "Arx Carolina" map is replaced by "A New Description of Carolina" and the map of "Virginiae pars Australis & Florida" is omitted altogether, substituted by the map of Barbados inserted after page 376.

Dissertationes de praestantia et usu numismatum antiquorum. Edition secunda, priori longe auctior, & variorum numismatum.

Amstelodami: Apud Danielem Elsevirium 4to (20.9 cm, 8.25"). Frontis., [46], 917, [51 (index)] pp.; illus.. 1671 Important treatise on ancient numismatics, written by a prominent scholar, diplomat, and collector who was one of the first to combine genuine interest in coins and medals with antiquarian erudition. This is the second edition, following the first of 1664 but more highly illustrated than that printing; the volume includes numerous in-text copper engravings depicting coins and monuments, at least one of which is signed I. Wyngaerden. The title-page is printed in red and black, with Elzevir's Minerva vignette. Contemporary vellum framed in blind double fillets with blind-tooled corner fleurons and central medallion, spine with early inked title; vellum lightly soiled, corners bumped, spine with mostly eradicated traces of old inked shelving number. Front pastedown with institutional bookplate (no stamps). Pages almost entirely clean, a few with chipped or lightly stained outer edges or corners. A good copy.

Caspari Bauhini ... Pinax theatri botanici: sive Index in Theophrasti Dioscoridis, Plinii et botanicorvm qui à seculo scripserunt opera ...

Basileae: Joannis Regis 4to (26.5 cm, 10.45"). [12] ff., 518 pp., [13] ff.. 1671 [with the same author's] Caspari Bauhini ... Prodromos theatri botanici ... Basileae: Impensis Joannis Regis, 1671. 4to (26.5 cm, 10.45"). 160 pp., [6] ff.; illus. Two hugely influential botanical works, by a Swiss botanist, anatomist, and physician (1560–1624; sometimes given as Gaspard Bauhin). Bauhin herein catalogues close to 6,000 species, establishing a system which Printing & the Mind of Man calls "a most important scientific advance," and using nomenclature later adopted by Linnaeus. => Bauhin's section on Zea mays is one of the earliest descriptions of New World maize, and was subsequently cited as such by Linnaeus. The Prodromos is illustrated with just under => 140 woodcuts depicting a wide variety of plants. Both works are here in their second, enlarged editions, following the original publications of Pinax in 1623 and Prodromos in 1620. The first title-page is printed in red and black, and both titles bear the printer's "Per angusta ad augusta" vignette. Evidence of readership: Many of the woodcuts have additional names supplied in an early pencilled hand. Contemporary half calf over speckled brown paper, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-ruled compartments; binding worn overall, front cover with abrasions to paper, spine leather crinkled, label chipped. Page edges untrimmed. Foxing and browning as is just about always the case with this edition due to the paper used and impurities in the water during production; with intermittent lighter spotting and offsetting throughout. Occasional pencilled annotations; front free endpaper with early ownership inscription and annotation. One leaf with tear from upper margin, extending into text with loss of a few letters, just barely touching image on reverse; one leaf with tear from outer margin, extending into text without loss, partially repaired. A copy clearly read and interacted with by a botanical-minded scholar.
