Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz; Ioannis Caramuelis
Campagna : In Officina episcopali, prostant Lugduni apud L. Anisson, 1670. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. First published discussion of binary arithmetic. Folio, 32 cm. Vellum spine over marbled boards, modern leather spine label. lxxviii, 779 pp. Engraved title piece. Lacking all 52 plates. Faint dampstain to middle of page on title piece and first 16 pages. Contemporary ink marginalia to several pages. Contemporary signature to title page. <br> Lobkowitz was a Spanish writer who worked in mathematics and astronomy and was fascinated by number systems. In 1670, Lobkowitz published his Mathesis Biceps, where he commentated on the base two number system (lxv-lxviii). In this work, he showed the decimal digits 0 - 32 encoded as binary. "He implemented an atypical notation for his encodings. Instead of using the symbols "0" and "1" to write his binary numbers, Lobkowitz decided to use "0" and "a". His reason for the choice was that, "One cannot mistake a binary string for a decimal one." (unlike Hariot before and Leibniz after him)" (Glaser) This has the obvious advantage that one cannot mistake a binary string for a decimal one, i.e. a0a0 = 10 and a0aa = 11. <br> Caramuel was also the first mathematician to make a reasoned study on non-decimal counts, resulting in a significant contribution to the development of the binary numeral system. He published specific examples of base 2 representations of numbers. He also treated bases 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, and 60. However, Caramuel does not show examples of arithmetic operations in nondecimal systems, except for the operation … [Click Below for Full Description]

FERMAT, Pierre de] DIOPHANTUS of Alexandria
Bernard Bosc, Toulouse, 1670. First edition, a fine copy, of Fermat's annotated edition of Diophantus' Arithmetica. This is the first printing of Fermat's contributions to the theory of numbers, of which he is the undisputed founder, including his famous statement of 'Fermat's last theorem.' Since most of Fermat's work in number theory remained unpublished in his lifetime, "it was neither understood nor appreciated until Euler revived it and initiated the line of continuous research that culminated in the work of Gauss and Kummer in the early nineteenth century" (DSB). Fermat showed little interest in publishing his work, which remained confined to his correspondence, personal notes, and to marginal jottings in his copy of the 1621 editio princeps, edited by Claude Bachet, of Diophantus' Arithmetica. Fermat's marginalia included not only arguments against some of Bachet's conclusions, but also new problems inspired by Diophantus. After his death, Fermat's eldest son Clement-Samuel published his father's marginalia in this new edition. Most famous of the 48 observations by Fermat included here is the tantalizing note that appears on fol. H3r "regarding the impossibility of finding a positive integer n > 2 for which the equation xn + yn = zn holds true for the positive integers x, y, and z" (Norman). Fermat noted that he had discovered a "truly marvellous demonstration" of this proposition, but that the margin was too narrow to transcribe it. This simple statement became known as the single most difficult problem in mathematics, and for over 300 years no mathematician succeed … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition. First edition of this important work on perspective and painting. "The draughtsman and engraver Grégoire Huret (1610-70) - an academician who was also close to the king - took over Bosse's lectures at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1670, Huret published Optique de portraiture et peinture (Optics of portraying and painting) in which he expressed great concern about the state of the art, particularly criticising Bosse's book from 1665 [On the practices of geometrical planes and perspectives] and previous publications... Huret claimed that his book should be seen as a contribution to the education of the young, especially to teaching them useful rules for drawing perspective... Huret was well read and discussed books on other subjects than perspective. Naturally enough these included general works on painting, but also Desargues's and Pascal's works on projective geometry... Among the more productive passages in Huret's book one can find a presentation of the construction and use of an angle scale. He also dealt with a point most authors avoided, namely the use of scaled lengths in perspective constructions. In this connection he presented the technique for applying a reduced distance in a distance point construction - without reducing the actual distance - that 'sGravesande applied later ... Huret may have been searching for a closer link between perspective and projective geometry. It also seems he had some doubts concerning perspective th … [Click Below for Full Description]

BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso.
Dominici Ferri, Bologna, 1670. A fine copy of one of the most important early treatises on fluid mechanics. In this work Borelli "argues against positive levity, discusses the Torricellian experiment, takes up siphons, pumps, and the nature of fluidity, tries to understand the expansion of water while freezing, and deals with fermentation and other chemical processes" (DSB). "This work is important as the first treatise on capillarity, and for containing important investigations on the action of capillary tubes, in which the author, inter alia, formulates the law that the height of the ascent of liquids in capillary tubes is inversely proportional to their diameters. His investigations also led him to the conclusion that the phenomenon of capillarity is independent of the pressure of air" (Zeitlinger in Sotheran, First supplement, 3060). "[De motionibus naturalibus] was well known among Borelli’s contemporaries and is quoted by Varignon in his Projet d’une nouvelle mechanique. It is reviewed in the first volume of Philosophical Transactions Abridged, where it is praised for its thoroughness, for the discussion of Torricelli's experiments and for Borelli’s stand against Descartes on the nature of fluidity" (Roberts & Trent). Borelli regarded this work, together with his De vi percussionis (1667), as necessary preparation for his masterpiece, De motum animalium (1680-81), on which he had worked since the early 1660s. The work appeared in three subsequent editions, testifying to its influence."While On the Force of Percussion laid out some foundational propositions relating to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rossi, Giovanni Giacomo. Printseller ] Prominent Roman baroque gardens
Rome, sold by Giovanni Giacomo Rossi (1666 to 1670). Folio. 8 engraved plates with title and descriptive key in roman and italic letter. Size of each: 260 x 380mm. Bound in limp vellum with decorative blind-stamp on front and back cover, early ink library shelf. A portfolio of garden designs individually selected from the Rome print seller, Giovanni Rossi, and privately bound. Collections of such prints were acquired by travellers in Italy from about 1600, either as reminders of a visit, or as is most likely in the present case, for use as a pattern book of ideas in laying out grounds. The gardens represented here are as follows: I. Villa Pamphili, built from 1644, for the Pamphili family by Alessandro Algardi, ‘the site (on the ancient Via Aurelia) offered a magnificent vista of Rome and a particularly spectacular view of St Peter’s’. The aspect shown here focuses on the view of the villa as seen from the hippodrome, and theatre with statuary and fountains. II. Villa Borghesia, begun in 1609, was built near the Porta Pinciana originally by the architect Flaminio Ponzio. The gardener in charge was listed as Domenico Savino who came from Montepulciano. The present view would appear to be that corresponding to the description of the 'first garden area . densely planted with evergreen trees and divided . into twenty-three roughly rectangular compartments outlined by espaliers of juniper, laurel, royal laurel, and mezereon’ (an early-flowering medicinal variety of laurel). Noblemen are seen entering the main gate into the 'semicircular piazza outlined by espaliered laurel trees … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first edition of this work appeared in Italian in Rome 1650-63. The French translation was made by Etienne Carneau and François Le Comte and first appeared 1661-64. Della Valle set off for Constantinople in June 1614, eventually spending over a year there, and from Constantinople he sailed for Alexandria; he visited Cairo and learned Arabic and Turkish. MYNSICHT, Adrian von
1670 Mynsicht Alchemy Philosopher’s Stone Occult Esoteric Medicine Pharmacy ‘Thesaurus et Armamentarium Medico-Chymicum’ is a medical treatise originally written in 1631 by Adrian von Mynsicht. Mynsicht was a German alchemist. According to Thorndike, “One of the most frequently reprinted works of medical pharmacy was the Thesaurus of Adrian Mynsicht. It purported to reveal to the ‘sons of doctrine and wisdom’ a most secret way of compounding drugs based on his own experience and practice.” Mynsicht was the first scholar to describe certain tartars in this book and he also wrote a small treatise on the philosopher’s stone, seeking to include his alchemist views. This esoteric thesaurus is the most popular and most famous of all 18th-century chemical pharmaceutical works. It is important for including the therapeutic theories of Paracelsus. Zesen, Philipp v.
Jahrhunde … [Click Below for Full Description]

1670. 4to (198 x 247 mm). 8 pp. With armorial woodcut vignette on title, headpiece and initial. Unbound as issued. Rare official account of the French diplomatic expedition to Algiers undertaken in January 1666 by lieutenant general Damien Martel to re-establish the peace between Louis XIV and the Barbary Coast. - To protect the French merchant fleet from North African corsairs, but also inspired by the mercantilist theories of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who strove to expand French commercial capacities abroad, the King had in 1664 sent an expedition under the Duke of Beaufort to Djidjelli in north-eastern Algeria. There, the French had sunk several corsair ships, seized the city and begun expanding the port into a permanent naval base. Algerian pirate commandos, however, soon retook the city, destroyed the French works and sold the surviving Frenchmen into slavery. Indeed, the Djidjelli expedition had achieved nothing for France but to serve as a convenient excuse for the Ottomans to charge Louis XIV with having breached the peace. While the Porte declared that they would not hinder the French in pursuing the corsairs, it was made clear that the Sultan would not permit them to take possession of the coastal cities and ports of Barbary. The French did not attempt to re-establish themselves in Africa; rather, they sent punitive expeditions throughout the Mediterranean to rout whatever corsair ships they could find, thus finally driving the Pasha of Algier to accept a new peace treaty. In early 1666, Martel was dispatched with a fleet of 17 ships (including three "brûlots", or fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lederband der Zeit. Erste Ausgabe. Vorsatz etwas leimschattig. Stellenweise leicht gebräunt. Unterer Rand etwas knapp beschnitten. Verlagsangaben und Frontispiz leicht angeschnitten. Rücken sorgsam erneuert.
