(10),448 pp., woodcuts and numerous textdiagrams. One leaf with a repaired tear, no loss. Marginal browning to the last few leaves. Contemp. underlinings in red on title-page. Half-title, title-page and portrait with the small blindtooled stamp from the Macclesfield Library. In top of title-page with previous owners name William Jones (English mathematician 1675-1749). A fine copy. ¶ Very rare first edition of the book that made Mouton famous. This work is important in many respects. In the words of Lalande: "This volume contains interesting memoirs on interpolations and on the project of a universal standard of measurement based on the pendulum." - It contains the first suggestion of an international unit of length based upon the meridian, and Mouton "was a pioneer in research on natural and practicable units of measurement. He had been struck by the difficulties and disagreements resulting from the great number of units of length, for example, which varied from province to province and from country to country. First he studied how the length of a pendulum with a frequency of one beat per second varies with latitude. He then proposed to deduce from these variations the length of the terrestrial meridian, a fraction of which was to be taken as the universal unit of length. Mouton selected the minute of the degree, which he called the mille. The divisions and subdivisions of this principal unit, all in decimal fractions, were … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nicolaes Visscher (1618 - 1679)
*** Titel: Novissima et accuratissima Totius Americae Descriptio *** Gebiet bzw. Ort: Nord- und Südamerika *** Kartograph: Nicolaes Visscher (1618-1679) *** Jahr: 1670 *** Größe des Plattenbereichs: 44 x 55 cm *** Technik: Kupferstich *** Zustand (Perfekt/ Sehr gut/ Gut/ Ordentlich/ Mäßig/ Schlecht): In gutem Erhaltungszustand. Kleiner, restaurierter Randeinriss oben rechts. [Click Below for Full Description]

MANLEY, Roger
London: Thomas Basset, 1670. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Roger Manley was an English military officer from the 17th-century who is chiefly remembered for his historical account of the wars in Denmark, in fact, 'Late Warres in Denmark' was of great importance to subsequent military historians. (Carnell). For decades, this work was the first and only English work to describe the Dano-Swedish War of 1657-60.

SANSON d'ABBEVILLE (Nicolas).
Paris, Pierre Mariette, 1670. 313 x 427 mm.

London, 1670. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is a very old book. This book was published in 1670. Most likely this is a First Edition but the actual title page is missing, but it has been supplied in manuscript. The book was rebound in the 1830's, because on the cover in Roman numerals it reads "1832". The binding is black leather with gold tooling. The gold tooling on the front and back covers are very elaborate. On the spine it has the title, below that a symbol or shield of some sort and below that is a date of the book in gold "1670". The binding is completely in tact, but has some scuffing and rubbing. For its age it is in great condition. Both boards are together and there are no tears to the pages. Two or three pages in the beginning are completely detached. The printing of the pages, some are not straight, and some pages, the printing goes almost to the bottom of the page. There are 284 pages. The fore-edge is most likely from the 1830's. The edge is of a tavern scene with two men and a dog.!!! BECAUSE I AM REDUCING ALL MY FORE EDGE PAINTING BOOKS BY 40% THERE WILL BE A SMALL S & H CHARGE OF $10.00 PER BOOK. As of this writing, 9-14-18, I only have one more wooden display. TODESCHI PIETRO.
1670. Incisione in rame, 405x513.

First and Rare edition. Naud (1631 - 1683), a French Jesuit priest, orientalist and a missionary to Syria. He arrived in Aleppo in 1665 . He studied Arabic and Syriac and became a good connoisseur of the Eastern liturgy. A great traveler, he had previously (in 1669) made a trip to Galilee in Bonnecorse M. company whose story was published - without the knowledge of P. Nau - by FS Alquié . This narrative is repeated in his "Voyage Nouveau de la Terre Sainte", of which he is the basis of the fifth book. Later in 1674 he was a member of the suite of the Marquis de Nointel, French ambassador to the Porte during his voyage in the Eastern Mediterranean in 1673-4, thereby gaining access to places that otherwise might have been to the lone Christian pilgrim. He joined the ambassador’s suite only to Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon. According to Sommervogel, Naud left Paris in 1665 to enlist in the Levant Missions. This work describes a journey Naud carried out with the French consul at Sidon, Bonnecorse, in 1665. Naud returned to Paris in 1682. Scarce copy -- probably the second English edition -- which needs (and deserves) some authentic and skillful conservation. Julie d'Aubigny (1670/1673 - 1707), better known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin, was a 17th-century swordswoman and opera singer. Her tumultuous career and flamboyant life were the subject of gossip and colourful stories in her own time, and inspired numerous portrayals afterwards. Théophile Gautier loosely based the title character, Madeleine de Maupin, of his novel Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835) on her. (Wikipedia) The real-life "La Maupin" frequently dressed in men's clothing (although never disguising her gender), taking lovers of both sexes, frequently skirting the law for doing things like beating up her landlord, or, in order to run away with her lover, a cloistered convent-bound nun, stole the body of a dead nun, placed her in her beloved's bed and set the room afire before running away with her lover.

Assignees of John Bill & Christopher Barker. USED: for Detailed Condition see further down item description below. This pocket-size Holy Bible must have looked stunning when it was made some 340 years ago in the days of King Charles II, small in size the 1670's full-leather binding was very ornately decorated, hand-tooled in gilt, even the page edges were gilded and then tooled - it must have been made for a wealthy important client. Printed in London by the Assignees of John Bill and Christopher/Robert Barker (printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty), this single volume was bound inclusive of: a 1670 printing of The Book of Common Prayer (approximately 156 pages), a 1677 Holy Bible both Old and New Testament (no Apocrypha included, O.T. 674 pages approx & N.T. 204 pages approx), and a 1673 printing of The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre (93 pages), ending with a 3-page section of Private Prayers. Please see my other items for more interesting and collectable items, as I wi … [Click Below for Full Description]
