WIT, Frederick de
Amsterdam, [c1670]. Amsterdam,, [c1670].. Hand-coloured engraved wall map on nine sheets, joined and mounted on linen, border to left and right of coats of arms of the Seventeen Provinces. A rare survival from the Dutch Golden Age: the true first state of Frederick de Wit's important nine-sheet wall map of the Seventeen Provinces, showing an anachronistic view of Europe. This map is a piece of cartographical nostalgia. The title of de Wit's work references the “XVII Provinciarum”, the Seventeen Provinces of the Low Countries. By the time this map was published, however, the Seventeen Provinces had long ceased to exist. In 1648 the Republic of the United Provinces and Habsburg Spain signed the Treaty of Münster, which recognised the Republic's independence. The Seventeen Provinces would never be a coherent territory again, but continued to be represented on maps as a single entity well into the eighteenth century (Koeman and van Egmond). For de Wit, printing in independent Amsterdam, this may have reflected a lingering hope that the provinces would be reunited once again in a republic; for those publishers in the Spanish Netherlands, it was politically inexpedient to promote the Spanish loss of territory. The cartography of the map is particularly meticulous: for Schilder it provides “for the first time a modern and detailed picture of the area of the Seventeen Provinces”. It shows the road system, and even the peateries, particularly important in a period when peat was a major fuel source. The side margins are decorated with putti holding shields showing the coats-of-a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grimmelshausen, Hans Jacob Christoph v.
"The frontispice is undoubtedly designed by Grimmelshausen himself. This is the only Simplician work to which the author signed his real name" (Faber du Faur). [Click Below for Full Description]

Garcilaso de la Vega
Gervais Clovzier, Paris, 1670. [12], 452; [12], 414 pp. Two volume set was rebound circa mid-1800's. Apparently trimmed during re-binding, but no loss of text. Pages are browned but are in excellent condition! Clean tight binding, very light scuffing to boards, First edition in French of the foundation work on the De Soto Expedition. One of the basic works on the De Soto Expedition, written by the half Spanish-half Peruvian historian of the New World Garcilaso de la Vega ("El Inca"), the first distinguished man of letters to be born there. De Soto, one of the most famous of the conquistadors, landed in Florida, near Tampa Bay, in the spring of 1539. He explored northward, attacking and enslaving local Indians until retaliatory strikes made his progress a running battle. In 1540 the expedition moved north and then west, crossing present-day Georgia, through central South Carolina and into western North Carolina. From here he crossed northern Alabama and Mississippi, where several major Indian attacks deprived the expedition of much of its equipment. In the spring of 1541 he crossed the Mississippi, and spent all of that year in present-day Arkansas. De Soto died the following year and was buried in the Mississippi to conceal his loss from the Indians; the survivors of the expedition rafted down the river and managed to sail small boats to Mexico. The De Soto expedition is thus the first major European exploration of much of the Southeast United States, as well as Arkansas. "This is a contemporary narrative of Hernando de Soto's Conquest of Florida, and the second to be publi … [Click Below for Full Description]

1670. I am listing a few higher end historic books and paper documents from my collection. Each piece is very special it it's own way. To see all of my items, type VAFO into the ebay search bar. THIS IS A RARE EARLY DUTCH SMALL BOOK THAT WAS ONCE OWNED BY MANASSEH CUTLER AND WAS GIVEN TO WINTRHOP SERGANT IN AUGUST OF 1787. AT THIS EXACT TIME, THESE TWO MEN WERE WORKING ON THE NORTHWEST ORDINANCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY SOME TYPE OF GIFT BETWEEN THE TWO MEN ON THEIR WORK TOGETHER. Manasseh Cutler (May 13, 1742 - July 28, 1823) was an American clergyman involved in the American Revolutionary War. Cutler was also a member of the United States House of Representatives. Cutler is "rightly entitled to be called 'The Father of Ohio University.'"[1] Another portrait of Manasseh Cutler Cutler was born in Killingly, Connecticut. In 1765, he graduated from Yale College and after being a school teacher in Dedham, Massachusetts and a merchant - and occasionally appearing in court as a lawyer - he decided to enter the ministry. From 1771 until his death, he was pastor of the Congregational church in what was the parish of Ipswich, Massachusetts until 1793, now Hamilton. For a few months in 1776, he was chaplain to the 11th Massachusetts Regiment commanded by Colonel Ebenezer Francis, raised for the defense of Boston. In 1778, he became chaplain to General Jonathan Titcomb's brigade and took part in General John Sullivan's expedition to Rhode Island. Soon after his return from this expedition he trained in medicine to supplement the scanty income of a minister. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Unknown & Various
Assignees of John Bill & Christopher Barker. USED: for Detailed Condition see further down item description below. This pocket-size Holy Bible must have looked stunning when it was made some 340 years ago in the days of King Charles II, small in size the 1670's full-leather binding was very ornately decorated, hand-tooled in gilt, even the page edges were gilded and then tooled - it must have been made for a wealthy important client. Another way that this is not an average C17th Bible, this pocket-size single volume edition of the King James version of The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New Testament, commences with the complete "Book of Common Prayer" and finishes with "The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre", over 1,100 pages, all printed in very small type on fine paper to greatly reduce the bulk (just 6-1/4 inches x 3-1/2 inches x 2 inches thick approximately). Still in its original 17th century decorative binding, and unrestored, as you can see I haven't even risked polishing this during the years I've owned it. Printed in London by the Assignees of John Bill and Christopher/Robert Barker (printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty), this single volume was bound inclusive of: a 1670 printing of The Book of Common Prayer (approximately 156 pages), a 1677 Holy Bible both Old and New Testament (no Apocrypha included, O.T. 674 pages approx & N.T. 204 pages approx), and a 1673 printing of The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre (93 pages), ending with a 3-page section of Private Prayers. CICERO, Marcus Tullius
1670. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "A room without books is like a body without a soul." ― Marcus Tullius Cicero Cicero was one of the most notable and prolific Roman figures of ancient Rome. His philosophical works and letters are considered the most reliable source of information for the period leading up to the fall of the Roman Republic. The works of Cicero have been published in numerous languages and formats from as early as the mid-15th-century; in fact, his work 'De Officiis' was notable for being the third book ever printed. (Baldwin, 590). These incredible works of Cicero were translated into French by Du Ryer. [Attributes: First Edition]

His philosophical works and letters are considered the most reliable source of information for the period leading up to the fall of the Roman Republic. The works of Cicero have been published in numerous languages and formats from as early as the mid-15th-century; in fact, his work 'De Officiis' was notable for being the third book ever printed.

[SPLENDID CEREMONIES].
Original ink and ink-wash drawings of 5 triumphal arches and 3 catafalques (elaborate funeral biers), plus an additional line drawing of a 4th catafalque on the back of one leaf, all erected at various locations in the city of Siena in Tuscany: in the cathedral, in the piazza before the cathedral, in Palazzo Piccolomini and at the Porta Santuccio. The drawings are richly decorated with sculptures, bas-reliefs, columns, cartouches, vases, candelabras and decorations, including Christian and classical figures and putti. The five triumphal arches were all erected for the occasion of the entry of Alessandro Zondadari (1670-1745), the new archbishop of Sienna on 11 August 1715. He was the fourth and last son of Ansano Zondadari and Agnese di Mario Chigi. She was a niece of Pope Alexander VII and heir of her brother Cardinal Flavio Chigi, one of the most influential and powerful men in Siena. One catafalque was erected for the funeral of Alessandro Zondadari's older brother Marc' Antonio Zondadari (1658-1722), Grand Master of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and Malta. Flavio Chigi went to great lengths to advance the prestige and power of his Zondadari relatives, paying many thousands of scudi to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723) for hereditary titles he could pass on. It is therefore no surprise that the Zondadari arches and catafalques are accompanied by catafalques for the Grand Duke himself and his wife Margarita Luisa d'Orléans (1645-1721), daughter of Gaston, Duke of Orléans and brother of King Loui … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOKE, Robert.
1670; 1666], [London. A very rare document related to the Great Fire of London written and signed by the great polymath Robert Hooke (1635-1703), with an equally rare separately-issued map showing the destruction caused by the fire. Starting at a bakery on Pudding Lane sometime after midnight on September 2, 1666, The Great Fire of London consumed over 13,000 houses, as well as numerous churches (including St. Paul?s cathedral) and other buildings. Charles II sought to rebuild as soon as possible to limit unrest and possible rebellion and called for plans from Robert Hooke, John Evelyn, Christopher Wren, and others. Hooke was appointed Surveyor of the City of London and, with Wren, was the chief architect for its rebuilding. As Surveyor Hooke was the arbiter of disputes erupting out of the staking-out process whereby party walls had been altered or streets widened. The present document is a report on such a dispute, between William Sanders (or Saunders) Draper and John Rowly Skinner over the rebuilding of their shop and residence on Ludgate Hill within the burnt district. Autograph documents by Hooke are extremely rare, with only two examples on the market in the last quarter century: Hooke?s manuscript notebook recording proceedings of the Royal Society (sold by private treaty to the Royal Society by Bonham's in 2006 for a reported £1,000,000) and a signed document being a King's Warrant for a patent for Hooke's watches with springs (sold by Bloomsbury Auctions for £23,100 in 1991). Artist: Cellarius / Loon van Andreas; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca, 1670. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 44 x 52; - description: Striking map of the famous Harmonia Macrocosmica atlas of Andreas Cellarius, also called the Cellarius Atlas. Cellarius demonstrates the Ptolemaic theory of epicycles. The epicycles theory addressed a problem that arose from the assumption that if the Earth was the center of the universe, then the circuit of the planets should be of a steady one-directional, circular progress. Observation showed, however, that the orbital progress of the planets was in fact irregular, and from these observations arose the ancient theory of epicycles illustrated here. - vita of the artist: "Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596 ? 1665) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for his Harmonia Macrocosmica of 1660, a major star atlas, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam.Andreas Cellarius, illustration of the Copernican system, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica 1660.He was born in Neuhausen, now a part of Worms, and was educated in Heidelberg. The Protestant Cellarius may have left Heidelberg at the onset of the Thirty years war in 1618 or in 1622 when the city came in Catholic hands. His activities are unclear at this time but based on his later works it is conjectured he spent time in Poland and may have even worked as a military engineer there. In 1625 he married Catharina Elt(e)mans in Amsterdam, where he worked as school master of a Latin School. After a brief stay in The Hague, the family mov … [Click Below for Full Description]

Luis Vaz de Camões
Lisbon: perfect for collectors (first 3 pages are copies) "Os Lusiadas / do grande Luis de Camoens, princepe dos poetas de Hespanha ; com os argumentos do Licenciado Ioaõ Franco Barretto, & index de todos os Nomes proprios ; offerecidas ao Illustrissimo Senhor Andre Furtado de Mendoça, por Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, impressor da Caza Real. - Lisboa : por Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, 1670" Os Lusíadas, usually translated as The Lusiads, is a Portuguese epic poem written by Luís Vaz de Camões (c. 1524/5 - 1580) and first published in 1572. It is widely regarded as the most important work of Portuguese literature and is frequently compared to Virgil's Aeneid (1st c. BC). The work celebrates the discovery of a sea route to India by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1469-1524). The ten cantos of the poem are in ottava rima and total 1,102 stanzas. Written in Homeric fashion, the poem focuses mainly on a fantastical interpretation of the Portuguese voyages of discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. Os Lusíadas is often regarded as Portugal's national epic, much as Virgil's Aeneid was for the Ancient Romans, or Homer's Iliad and Odyssey for the Ancient Greeks. It was written when Camões was an exile in Macau and was first printed in 1572, three years after the author returned from the Indies.
