(in Quérard). ''Son style, dit Voltaire, est vif et léger, ses images animées ; elle a fait perdre le goût des longs romans''. ''Ajoutons que ses ouvrages se ressentent un peu de sa vie galante ; et qu'elle se plaît surtout à peindre les faiblesses de son sexe.'' (in Quérard). [Click Below for Full Description]

Montanus, Arnoldus.
Printed by Tho. Johnson for the author, 1670. The Tokugawa shogunate under Tokugawa Iemitsu sought by various edicts and policies from 1633-39 to limit access to Japan by foreign merchants and travellers. The Dutch, however, had in 1609 established trade relations that endured the closure and that special status was cemented during the Shimabara uprising of 1637 when the Dutch helped suppress the Christian uprising. England and the rest of Europe learned of Japan chiefly via works by Dutch writers. Montanus (1625?-83), a teacher and author, never visited Japan but he collected and assembled a vast amount of information from many writers and in 1669 he published Gedenkwaerdige gesantschappen der Oost-Indische Maatschappy in 't Vereenigde Nederland, aan de Kaisaren van Japan. John Ogilby (1600-76) immediately translated it and in 1670 his Atlas Japannensis became => the first major English-language monograph on Japan. It is a treasure house of information on the political divisions, culture, religion, customs, mores, social life, history, and government of the island empire. The information is printed in single-column format in an easy to read roman font with some words and phrases in italic. The title-page is in black and red and there are engraved and woodcut headpieces, factotum initials, engraved historiated initials, and in-text engraved illustrations.

Roberts, A.
London, (William Wilson and) Moses Pitt, 1670. Small 8vo. (8), 252 [but 254], (2) pp. (includes final leaf of ads). Contemporary calf, rebacked. First edition of this extraordinary account of an Englishman’s capture by Barbary pirates and subsequent adventures as a slave in Algeria. The narrative is framed as an authentic journal of a deceased traveller, prepared for the press by a friend of the departed. Through this mechanism the reader is taken into a proto-novelistic fantasy, albeit one that must have been informed by genuine experience of Eastern travel. As a slave under numerous masters the author tricks his way variously into employment as the cook to the King of Algiers, is then demoted to Keeper of the King’s Bath and secretly fathers a daughter with one of the King’s wives. After an unsuccessful stint as a gardener’s assistant he journeys in the service of an officer, collecting tribute money with the Algerian army and offers his services as an advisor to the Ottoman governor of Tlemcen. He recounts observations on the various peoples encountered and their customs and peculiarities, marvelling at flying serpents, lions and ostriches and skirmishing with an army of Arabs. Against a backdrop of mosques, minarets and palaces, the narrative is peppered with anecdotes of meetings with Barbary pirates, European renegados, and dalliances with alluring women of the Maghreb. - The author takes particular relish in recounting the details of his sexual adventures: "the women in this country keep much at home, but their minds and affections are more wandering abroad, because … [Click Below for Full Description]

Notre ouvrage contient 4 grandes planches hors texte. 1670. I am listing a few higher end historic books and paper documents from my collection. Each piece is very special it it's own way. To see all of my items, type VAFO into the ebay search bar. THIS IS A RARE EARLY DUTCH SMALL BOOK THAT WAS ONCE OWNED BY MANASSEH CUTLER AND WAS GIVEN TO WINTRHOP SERGANT IN AUGUST OF 1787. AT THIS EXACT TIME, THESE TWO MEN WERE WORKING ON THE NORTHWEST ORDINANCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY SOME TYPE OF GIFT BETWEEN THE TWO MEN ON THEIR WORK TOGETHER. Manasseh Cutler (May 13, 1742 - July 28, 1823) was an American clergyman involved in the American Revolutionary War. Cutler was also a member of the United States House of Representatives. Cutler is "rightly entitled to be called 'The Father of Ohio University.'"[1] Another portrait of Manasseh Cutler Cutler was born in Killingly, Connecticut. In 1765, he graduated from Yale College and after being a school teacher in Dedham, Massachusetts and a merchant - and occasionally appearing in court as a lawyer - he decided to enter the ministry. From 1771 until his death, he was pastor of the Congregational church in what was the parish of Ipswich, Massachusetts until 1793, now Hamilton. For a few months in 1776, he was chaplain to the 11th Massachusetts Regiment commanded by Colonel Ebenezer Francis, raised for the defense of Boston. In 1778, he became chaplain to General Jonathan Titcomb's brigade and took part in General John Sullivan's expedition to Rhode Island. Soon after his return from this expedition he trained in medicine to supplement the scanty income of a minister. … [Click Below for Full Description]

1670. Paris: du Val, 1669. Original colour. 415 x 545mm. Narrow top margin, as issued. An uncut sheet of 52 playing cards, divided into the four French suits now adopted in the English-speaking world. Each suit is assigned to a continent: Hearts to Europe, Diamonds to Asia, Spades to Africa and Clubs to America). Each suit has three face cards with roundel portraits and 10 numbered cards, representing a region on that continent, all with the suit symbol with the card number engraved within it. These numbers are often obscured by the thick hand colour, but fortunately the numbers are repeated elsewhere. The number cards all have a list of facts about the region equalling the card's number. At the head of the sheet is a panel containing the title, the arms of Louis, Dauphin of France (1661-1711) and dedication, and four small continental maps, probably created to decorate a box for the cards. Of interest is the Queen of Clubs: a supposed portrait of Queen Elizabeth I represents Virginia, with 'facts' limited to 'Pomeiok (another name for the Pamlico tribe and their village), Jamestown et autre places'. The 8 of Clubs is 'Canada' but includes references to Boston and Manhattan, rather playing down England's possession of both towns. Engraved by Robert Cordier (d. c.1673).

Garcilaso de la Vega
Gervais Clovzier, Paris, 1670. [12], 452; [12], 414 pp. Two volume set was rebound circa mid-1800's. Apparently trimmed during re-binding, but no loss of text. Pages are browned but are in excellent condition! Clean tight binding, very light scuffing to boards, First edition in French of the foundation work on the De Soto Expedition. One of the basic works on the De Soto Expedition, written by the half Spanish-half Peruvian historian of the New World Garcilaso de la Vega ("El Inca"), the first distinguished man of letters to be born there. De Soto, one of the most famous of the conquistadors, landed in Florida, near Tampa Bay, in the spring of 1539. He explored northward, attacking and enslaving local Indians until retaliatory strikes made his progress a running battle. In 1540 the expedition moved north and then west, crossing present-day Georgia, through central South Carolina and into western North Carolina. From here he crossed northern Alabama and Mississippi, where several major Indian attacks deprived the expedition of much of its equipment. In the spring of 1541 he crossed the Mississippi, and spent all of that year in present-day Arkansas. De Soto died the following year and was buried in the Mississippi to conceal his loss from the Indians; the survivors of the expedition rafted down the river and managed to sail small boats to Mexico. The De Soto expedition is thus the first major European exploration of much of the Southeast United States, as well as Arkansas. "This is a contemporary narrative of Hernando de Soto's Conquest of Florida, and the second to be publi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Unknown & Various
Assignees of John Bill & Christopher Barker. USED: for Detailed Condition see further down item description below. This pocket-size Holy Bible must have looked stunning when it was made some 340 years ago in the days of King Charles II, small in size the 1670's full-leather binding was very ornately decorated, hand-tooled in gilt, even the page edges were gilded and then tooled - it must have been made for a wealthy important client. Another way that this is not an average C17th Bible, this pocket-size single volume edition of the King James version of The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New Testament, commences with the complete "Book of Common Prayer" and finishes with "The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre", over 1,100 pages, all printed in very small type on fine paper to greatly reduce the bulk (just 6-1/4 inches x 3-1/2 inches x 2 inches thick approximately). Still in its original 17th century decorative binding, and unrestored, as you can see I haven't even risked polishing this during the years I've owned it. Printed in London by the Assignees of John Bill and Christopher/Robert Barker (printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty), this single volume was bound inclusive of: a 1670 printing of The Book of Common Prayer (approximately 156 pages), a 1677 Holy Bible both Old and New Testament (no Apocrypha included, O.T. 674 pages approx & N.T. 204 pages approx), and a 1673 printing of The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre (93 pages), ending with a 3-page section of Private Prayers. PETTUS, Sir John.
FIRST EDITION of the standard seventeenth century English work on mining. It is very valuable for giving an account of the state of mining in England during the seventeenth century. The glossary at the end is the first attempt in English at a dictionary of mining terms (in his Fleta Minor of 1683 Pettus appended the first dictionary of metallurgy and minerals in English). Pettus (1613-1690), was the deputy governor of the royal mines in England and Wales. The fine portrait, here in the second state (signed "W. Sherwin sculpsit"), shows Pettus aged 57.Wing P1908. Duveen, p. 468. Hoover 634. Kress 1270.

Peter Heylyn
Complete, binding tight, minor defects. COSMOGRAPHIE in foure Bookes Contayning the CHOROGRAPHIE & HISTORIE of the whole WORLD by Peter Heylyn Printed for Philip Chetwind in Aldergate Street over against New Street 1670 I'm offering for sale a truly wonderful item, Peter Heylyn's COSMOGRAPHIA printed in 1670 in London. Peter Heylyn 1599 -1662 was an English ecclesiastic and author of many tracts such as the book for sale here. Cosmographia was an attempt to give a detailed description of the whole world in one treatise. It contains very early (sometimes claimed, first) description of Australia, California and Tierra del Fuego in print and discusses the search of Terra Australis Incognita (the Antarctica). Four folding maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and The Americas. All present and complete. The Map of North America shows lots of Terra Incognita and California as an island. This is actually four books in one volume. The frontispiece has year 1670 printed on it, but the two title pages immediately following it have years 1666 and 1665 on them (see photos). The four books/parts show printing years 1665 (Europe 1), 1665 (Europe 2), 1665 (Asia), 1662 (Africa, part1 of book 4) and undated (Americas, part2 of book 4). Binding is tight, all pages are there and firmly attached. Contemporary leather binding with gilded back ornaments showing some wear. Frontispiece repaired at some point. Foxing and dirt here and there, but altogether very clean and pleasant to browse. This is a truly wonderful piece of history, which I do not want to part with too easily. My expectation is not unreas … [Click Below for Full Description]
