LETI, Gregorio
for John Starkey, and are to be sold by Dorman Newman. 1670 1ed English Leti Cardinalismo Roman Catholic Church Cardinals BANNED Gregorio Leti was a notable 17th-century Italian historian who is known for having each of his published works placed on the ‘Prohibited Books Index’. These works were mostly a satirical approach to the Catholic Church and included a history of Catholic Cardinals. ‘Cardinalismo’ or ‘History of the Cardinals’ is an attack on the Catholic Church and the powers of those in charge. Even though Leti was called ‘inexact’ by the Catholic Encyclopedia and ‘inaccurate’ by the Lutheran church, his historical importance and relevance is well-known and unprecedented. (Mosheim, 194). Wit, Frederick de
1670. The rare first state of Frederick de Wit's famous double hemisphere world map. The map includes two polar projections framed with floral wreaths and pairs of cupids. The corners are superbly embellished with brilliant scenes of the four seasons, which include mythological figures of centaurs, Bacchus, as well as cupids holding signs of the zodiacs. De Wit's atlases are rarely dated and consequently the maps from these atlases are usually assigned a general date of C1680. Rodney Shirley states 'There are however reasons for concluding that this world map was first produced at least a decade earlier.' he goes on to say 'the less well-developed form of Hudson's Bay, the out-dated configuration of the Great Lakes and the marking of Spitzbergen in outline only. It may have been engraved in the mid-1660s.' (Shirley p.451) Australia and New Zealand are shown with the Dutch discoveries made up to and including those of Abel Tasman 1642-1644. In this first state, the cusps of the map (the triangular area between the spheres) are blank and there is no outer border; these were added to the second plate used to print this map in C1680. Additionally the following changes were made, New Guinea or Nova Guinea and Quiri Regio on the left hemisphere. From De Wit's Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas References; Koeman p.518 M.Wit 1 (1), Shirley p.451, ill. pl.33. 465mm x 550mm (18.31" x 21.65")

[Click Below for Full Description]

BACON, Francis
London: J.R. for William Lee: and are to be sold by George, 1670. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly." ― Francis Bacon A rare collection of important works of Francis Bacon bound together as one! Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. This book 'Sylva Sylvarum' with 'Novus Atlas' is a famous set of philosophical treatises covering topics such as medical treatments for prolonged life and preservation of youth by using opium! Bacon wrote this book as a collection of miscellaneous topics - others include ancient wisdom and secrets. Other works in this volume include 'New Atlantis' and 'Natural History' which helped lay the foundation for many philosophical methodologies that would be important through the 18th- and 19th-centuries. This 1670 edition features an illustrated title page, frontispiece portrait of Bacon, and separate pagination for each of the named works.

SPINOZA, BENEDICT DE
Hamburg [Amsterdam]: Heinrich Künraht, 1670. First edition of this landmark of 17th-century thought, the most important of the two books Spinoza published in his lifetime. "Spinoza's thought, a fusion of Cartesian rationalism and the Hebraic tradition in which he grew up, is a solitary but crystal clear exposition of the theory of natural right. He defends with eloquence the liberty of thought and speech in speculative matters, and the Tractatus contains the first clear statement of the independence of each other of philosophy and religion" (PMM).Spinoza held that "Man is moved to the knowledge and love of God; the love of God involves the love of our fellow men. Man, in order to obtain security, surrenders part of his right of independent action to the State. But the State exists to give liberty, not to enslave; justice, wisdom, and toleration are essential to the sovereign power" (PMM). Spinoza's Tractatus Theologico-Politicus was a notorious book in its own time both for what it attacked and for what it advocated. Spinoza scrutinized religious teachings and Scripture to argue that they were mere products of the human mind. At the same time, he "believed that the political model of the ancient Hebrews could be imitated in certain key respects. ... Unlike Hobbes, whose social contract theory justified absolute monarchy, Spinoza argued that democracy was a preferred form of government. And, finally, he thought that the state would be better off if it granted limited religious toleration and the freedom to philosophize" (Melamed and Rosenthal, eds., Spinoza's Tractatus Theo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tobias Conrad LOTTER (1717 - 1777)
Incisione in rame, bellissima coloritura antica. This map is Lotter's version of Guillaume Delisle's map of North America, with several modifications. The Great Lakes are based on the Coronelli model showing the French strong points at Tadousac, Quebec, Fort Sorel, Montreal and Fort Frontenac. In the Pacific are shown the routes of different voyages. The most interesting aspect of the map is the region of California. Delisle was the first cartographer to revert to a peninsula form for California. Lotter follows that here, but engraved the map with a small gap at the head of the Gulf of California, thus leaving the possibility still open for the island theory. The large cartouche features a Native American and a ship's captain. Etching on copperplate with fine original handcolour, in good conditions

RYCAUT, Paul
Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgank, 1670. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Paul Rycaut was a 17th-century British historian most-known for being the leading authority on the Ottoman Empire. He published 'The Present State of the Ottoman Empire' which become the most important work on the Ottoman Empire. It provided accounts on Turkish politics and society, and according to Blackmer, this work is "an extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th-century." Cox notes of this work: "This work is regarded as one of the best of its kind with respect to the religious and military state of Turkey." This incredible 1670 French edition is filled with engravings of portraits of sultans, Ottoman clothing and costumes, military officers, descriptions of Turkish customs, military and naval excursions, bizarre and odd medical conditions such as Turkish dwarfs, and much, much more. Translated by Pierre Briot out of the original English; published in Amsterdam - noted to be a pirated edition of the Paris Cramoisy edition.

[LAFAYETTE, Marie-Madeleine de].
Paris: Claude Barbin, 1670. 2 vols, 8vo (150 × 90 mm), pp. 441, [1]; [4], 536. Titles with woodcut devices. Later maroon crushed morocco, gilt, gilt edges, by Masson-De Bonnelle. Bookplates (Grandsire). An excellent copy. First edition, rare. A Hispano-Moorish romance, which unfolds during the long medieval struggle between Christians and Muslims for control of the Iberian Peninsula, Zayde often considered the last great French romance before the emergence of the modern novel (a development also attributed to Madame de Lafayette, with her La Princesse de Clèves). The first volume contains the first appearance of Daniel Huet's treatise on the origin of novels. Like the better-known La Princess de Clèves, the novel was issued carrying the name of Madame Lafayette's friend and confidant Jean Regbault de Segrais, secretary the duchesse de Montpensier. It is also likely that de la Rochefoucauld had hand in the novel's composition. Lafayette was the only woman author of Ancien regime France who had a work accepted into the canon of world literature--The Princess of Clèves, variously referred to, depending on context, as the first psychological novel, the first historical novel, even the first realist novel. Tchemerzine, III, 834-835 - Brunet, III, 743.
