Despite his Nonconformist views, Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Garcilaso de la Vega
Gervais Clovzier, Paris, 1670. [12], 452; [12], 414 pp. Two volume set was rebound circa mid-1800's. Apparently trimmed during re-binding, but no loss of text. Pages are browned but are in excellent condition! Clean tight binding, very light scuffing to boards, First edition in French of the foundation work on the De Soto Expedition. One of the basic works on the De Soto Expedition, written by the half Spanish-half Peruvian historian of the New World Garcilaso de la Vega ("El Inca"), the first distinguished man of letters to be born there. De Soto, one of the most famous of the conquistadors, landed in Florida, near Tampa Bay, in the spring of 1539. He explored northward, attacking and enslaving local Indians until retaliatory strikes made his progress a running battle. In 1540 the expedition moved north and then west, crossing present-day Georgia, through central South Carolina and into western North Carolina. From here he crossed northern Alabama and Mississippi, where several major Indian attacks deprived the expedition of much of its equipment. In the spring of 1541 he crossed the Mississippi, and spent all of that year in present-day Arkansas. De Soto died the following year and was buried in the Mississippi to conceal his loss from the Indians; the survivors of the expedition rafted down the river and managed to sail small boats to Mexico. The De Soto expedition is thus the first major European exploration of much of the Southeast United States, as well as Arkansas. "This is a contemporary narrative of Hernando de Soto's Conquest of Florida, and the second to be publi … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, 1670. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is a very old book. This book was published in 1670. Most likely this is a First Edition but the actual title page is missing, but it has been supplied in manuscript. The book was rebound in the 1830's, because on the cover in Roman numerals it reads "1832". The binding is black leather with gold tooling. The gold tooling on the front and back covers are very elaborate. On the spine it has the title, below that a symbol or shield of some sort and below that is a date of the book in gold "1670". The binding is completely in tact, but has some scuffing and rubbing. For its age it is in great condition. Both boards are together and there are no tears to the pages. Two or three pages in the beginning are completely detached. The printing of the pages, some are not straight, and some pages, the printing goes almost to the bottom of the page. There are 284 pages. The fore-edge is most likely from the 1830's. The edge is of a tavern scene with two men and a dog.!!! BECAUSE I AM REDUCING ALL MY FORE EDGE PAINTING BOOKS BY 40% THERE WILL BE A SMALL S & H CHARGE OF $10.00 PER BOOK. [Attributes: First Edition]

William Rawley
This book is an original 1670 London book on the life of Francis Bacon. It appears to be a rare book and perfect for those interested in old English Literature. I have owned this book since around 1973. It is an oversized book and appears to be, possibly, missing a couple of pages. Other than this it is in excellent condition, for its age. RAWLEY, WILLIAM (1588?-1667), the 'learned chaplain' of Francis Bacon, born at Norwich about 1588, was admitted a bible-clerk of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, on 22 Jan. 1606, and, after graduating B.A., was elected fellow and tutor of his college on 19 March 1609-10. He took holy orders in 1611, and was instituted by the university to the rectory of Bowthorpe, Norfolk, on 10 Dec. 1612. Soon afterwards he obtained an introduction to Sir Francis Bacon, who induced Corpus Christi College to bestow on him the rectory of Landbeach in 1616. He proceeded B.D. in 1615, and D.D. in 1621. When Bacon became lord chancellor in 1618, he made Rawley his chaplain and amanuensis. Bacon treated Rawley with the utmost confidence, and employed him in preparing his manuscripts for publication. When he ceased to be lord chancellor in 1621, Bacon recommended Rawley to the notice of Bishop Williams, the new lord keeper, but from him Rawley received little beyond promises. He maintained friendly relations with Bacon, and in 1623 there appeared 'cura et fide Gul. Rawley,' the first edition of Bacon's 'De Augmentis.' On Bacon's death in 1626 he left Rawley 100l. and his copy of the polyglot bible. Rawley devoted himself thenceforth to editing Bacon's unpubli … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Assignees of John Bill & Christopher Barker, 1670. USED: for Detailed Condition see further down item description below. This pocket-size Holy Bible must have looked stunning when it was made some 340 years ago in the days of King Charles II, small in size the 1670's full-leather binding was very ornately decorated, hand-tooled in gilt, even the page edges were gilded and then tooled - it must have been made for a wealthy important client. Another way that this is not an average C17th Bible, this pocket-size single volume edition of the King James version of The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New Testament, commences with the complete "Book of Common Prayer" and finishes with "The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre", over 1,100 pages, all printed in very small type on fine paper to greatly reduce the bulk (just 6-1/4 inches x 3-1/2 inches x 2 inches thick approximately). Still in its original 17th century decorative binding, and unrestored, as you can see I haven't even risked polishing this during the years I've owned it. Printed in London by the Assignees of John Bill and Christopher/Robert Barker (printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty), this single volume was bound inclusive of: a 1670 printing of The Book of Common Prayer (approximately 156 pages), a 1677 Holy Bible both Old and New Testament (no Apocrypha included, O.T. 674 pages approx & N.T. 204 pages approx), and a 1673 printing of The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre (93 pages), ending with a 3-page section of Private Prayers. BRUNEL (Antoine de)]
London Printed for Henry Herrignman, 1670. FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo, 163 x 105 mms., pp. [viii], 247 [248 blank], notes in pencil on recto of rear free end-paper, later wrappers; front hinge exposed, but a good to very good copy. This abridged translation of Voyage d'Espagne curieux, historique, et politique (1665) by Antoine de Brunel is also attributed to François van Aerssen, 1572-1641, and to his grandson François van Aerssen, 1630-1658. "Dutch diplomat Antoine de Brunel's Voyage d'Espagne (A Journey into Spain, 1665) tends to burden the reader with intricacies of court politics, but he also inserts here and there superb portraits of political figures - under lining the pettiness of the Spanish nobility - as well as poignant descriptions of a mostly desolate land, its miserable lodgings, its precarious buildings, and other evidence to Spain's low quality of life" (Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza, Anxo Abuín González, César Domínguez, editors: A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula 2010). Brunel's volume was the first mention of bullfighting in Spain in English and had wide literary repercussions, being a source, for example, of Ernest Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon (1932). Brunel discusses the bullfights over several pages (77 - 83). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Edmund Wingate was a 17th-century English legal writer who published one of the largest and most thorough collection of English statutes, rights, and laws. 'Statutes in Force and Use' is an extensive and detailed list of legal issues and standards from the most expected to the most underwhelming. Wingate provides explanations and examples of gunpowder laws, murder and manslaughter, and regulations on markets and commerce, but also laws on hat wearing and how to run a fair.

Two pages of advertisements at beginning. Seventeen etchings by Chamollion, from designs by Toudouze. Lacks one plate from p. 356. Scarce copy -- probably the second English edition,. Julie d'Aubigny (1670/1673 - 1707), better known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin, was a 17th-century swordswoman and opera singer. Her tumultuous career and flamboyant life were the subject of gossip and colourful stories in her own time, and inspired numerous portrayals afterwards. Théophile Gautier loosely based the title character, Madeleine de Maupin, of his novel Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835) on her. (Wikipedia) The real-life "La Maupin" frequently dressed in men's clothing (although never disguising her gender), taking lovers of both sexes, frequently skirting the law for doing things like beating up her landlord, or, in order to run away with her lover, a cloistered convent-bound nun, stole the body of a dead nun, placed her in her beloved's bed and set the room afire before running away with her lover.

Bound in the nineteenth century in full blue morocco with gilt decoration and border on upper and lower covers. Five raised bands, six compartments lavishly decorated in gilt. Author and title in gilt in second compartment and place and date of publication in the third compartment. Heavily decorated gilt inner dentelles stamped at the foot of the upper cover "bound by F. Bedford". All edges gilt. Marbled end papers. This is a very fine binding in superb condition with only the very slightest rubbing at the hinges. The contents are in equally good condition. Bookplate of Lord Kennet of the Dene. A beautiful book.
