Grimmelshausen, Hans Jacob Christoph v.
"The frontispice is undoubtedly designed by Grimmelshausen himself. This is the only Simplician work to which the author signed his real name" (Faber du Faur). [Click Below for Full Description]

Roberts, A.
1670. Small 8vo. (8), 252 [but 254], (2) pp. (includes final leaf of ads). Contemporary calf, rebacked. First edition of this extraordinary account of an Englishman's capture by Barbary pirates and subsequent adventures as a slave in Algeria. The narrative is framed as an authentic journal of a deceased traveller, prepared for the press by a friend of the departed. Through this mechanism the reader is taken into a proto-novelistic fantasy, albeit one that must have been informed by genuine experience of Eastern travel. As a slave under numerous masters the author tricks his way variously into employment as the cook to the King of Algiers, is then demoted to Keeper of the King's Bath and secretly fathers a daughter with one of the King's wives. After an unsuccessful stint as a gardener's assistant he journeys in the service of an officer, collecting tribute money with the Algerian army and offers his services as an advisor to the Ottoman governor of Tlemcen. He recounts observations on the various peoples encountered and their customs and peculiarities, marvelling at flying serpents, lions and ostriches and skirmishing with an army of Arabs. Against a backdrop of mosques, minarets and palaces, the narrative is peppered with anecdotes of meetings with Barbary pirates, European renegados, and dalliances with alluring women of the Maghreb. - The author takes particular relish in recounting the details of his sexual adventures: "the women in this country keep much at home, but their minds and affections are more wandering abroad, because they are so recluse; whereas if they had … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANSON d'ABBEVILLE (Nicolas).
Paris, Pierre Mariette, [1670]. 313 x 427 mm.

Borelli, Giovanni Alfonso
Domenico Antonio Ferro, 1670. Small 4° (193x145 mm). [12] (including half title), 162, [1] pp. With the final errata leaf. At the beginning one folding plate viewing Etna eruption of 1669, engraved by Doria. Woodcuts in text. Bound in old vellum, edges sprinkled in red. Pastedowns and endpapers renewed. An excellent copy, slightly toned and soiled the half title. A few, light spotting on scattered leaves, mostly marginal. The rare first edition of the most significant 17th-century study of volcanology, with a fine plate depicting the great 1669 eruption. The work was written by Borelli during his stay in Messina, in behalf of the FlorentineAccademia del Cimento and of the secretary of the London Royal Society, Henry Oldenburg. The treatise offers not only a narrative description of the Etna eruption, but also systematic observations on the morphology of volcanoes, the nature and the causes of volcanic eruptivity, the generation and the structure of lava, disagreeding with the theories developed by Athanasius Kircher in the Mundus Subterraneus, and benefiting from the publication in 1669 of Steno?s De solido intro solidum (see item E). ?Borelli presented his own highly sophisticated understanding of a volcanic eruption as a geographical phenomenon which could be studied physically, chemically, and mathematically. His account of Etna?s most recent eruption explicitly critiqued a central argumeny put forth by the Jesuit Kircher in the Subterranean World. Using evidence from Etna?s lava flow and chancing morphology, Borelli negated the idea of eternal mountains and perpetual su … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANSON d'ABBEVILLE (Nicolas).
Paris, Pierre Mariette, [1670]. 320 x 430 mm.

Rara. Engraving, circa 1670, monogrammed in plate below. AfterTitian. Beautiful impressions, printed on contemporary laid paper, with thin margins, light abrasions in the top, otherwise in good condition. These works are part of Notomie di Tiziano dedicate all'Ill.mo Sig. Francesco Ghislieri published in Bologna between 1670 and 1680. The title page contains the portrait of Titian between the bay leaves, the lion of St. Mark, a cloth containing the dedication. Here are 17 anatomical engravings. Fourteen of the plates are taken from De humani corporis fabrica of Vesalius and the other from Tabulae anatomicae VI, also of Vesalius. Blount, Thomas
Printed by Tho. Newcomb, for John Martin and Henry Herringman, 1670-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. First Edition of Blount's Dictionary. Folio. [13], 272 pp. Bound in modern red Cambridge-style leather. 5 raised bands. Gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Fine binding and cover. Marginal dampstain to several page margins affecting text.

Finding defects with Cowell's Interpreter (1607) and Rastell's Termes de la Ley (1523), Blount, published a significant improvement. In his preface, Blount indicates why he felt his book was needed: Cowell "is sometimes too prolix in the derivation of a Word, setting down several Authors Opinions, without categorically determining which is the true" and Rastell "wrote so long hence, that his very Language and manner of expression was almost antiquated." He was encouraged in his endeavor by the belief that no science had more abstruse terms than that of the Law, and stated that the dictionary will be useful "even from the Coif to the puny-Clerk."
More elaborate than the Termes de la Ley, this work quickly superseded its predecessors. In addition to providing the explanation of common law terms, Blount was "the first lexicographer of a purely English dictionary to attempt an etymology of words (Starnes & Noyes, p. 46)"; he devoted many pages to etymology and described the origins of ancient law customs. Blount was also the first English lexicographer who consistently cited references to authorities consulted, statutes, and treatises (Cowley, lxxxix). HAGEN, Christiaan, van der.
Amsterdam Leiden -1724 1670 - Large Folio. (55 x 33 cm). Composite atlas comprising 23 engraved mapsheets incorporating two large multi-sheet wall-maps and 6 double-page maps (4 with fine original hand-colour with a separate letterpress title and key pasted to bottom), title leaves of the large map somewhat browned, upper joint weak, blind tooled vellum with rules and ornamental centre piece with arabesques, gilt, small split at headband, spine in 10 compartments with raised bands, gilt; spine splitting. A fine composite atlas of maps and views of the city of Leiden, with Hagen's famous wall-maps, both large and small and both complete. It incorporates Leiden's administrative structure in beautiful, strong contemporary hand-colour. The large wall-map, issued in 1670, is engraved on 10 double-page and 4 full-page mapsheets, while the small wall-map, issued five years later, is printed on 3 double-page mapsheets. Both maps include lovely engraved views of the city, especially the 9 larger views of the 1670 map. Very interestingly, the atlas, compiled in the early 18th century, includes five separate versions of the small map: one complete with the title and the views, and four focusing only on the plan of the city, all four coloured by hand to make visible various aspects of the city. With some paper slips and other letterpress titles pasted on the engraved sheets, these four versions show: the extensions of the town, the Fire Brigade quarters, the division of the town in the eight companies of the citizen's militia and the town quarters. The atlas gives therefore a unique in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Folio (43 x 28cm. approx.), xvi, 768pp., half-title, engraved frontispiece, 47 engraved plates and maps as called for in list of plates, most double-page or folding, also with 10 engravings on 5 sheets, not called for in list of plates but present in most copies, 46 engravings in text, contemporary panelled calf gilt, red morocco lettering piece. Ogilby was Cosmographer to Charles II. "Africa" was the first publication in Ogilby's great project to create an Atlantic or English Atlas designed to increase England's trade and extend her national prestige. Ogilby's idea of an atlas meant not only maps but also available and up-to-date translations of various accounts, principally from Dapper. Although he used the same frontispiece, title-page and maps as Dapper, Ogilby used folio sheets one-third larger than Dapper's which made the volume more impressive. Ogilby also added tales of English interest such as the attack on the "Mary Rose" specifically for the home market. Wing 0163; Tooley, Africa, p87. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Robert, Nicolas (1614-1685)
Paris, 1670. Nicolas Robert was one of the greatest natural history artists of the 17th century, and his work established standards combining scientific accuracy and esthetic appeal that influenced generations of artists and won the respect and patronage of the French royal family. Robert created a vast, exquisite body of work for the French Crown. Along with other artists, he was commissioned by Gaston d'Orléans, brother of Louis XIII, to create watercolors of rare plants and exotic birds assembled in the garden at Blois and the Versailles Ménagerie. Robert's talent was quickly recognized as superior to that of other artists working for the royal family, and after Gaston d'Orléans's death he was placed under the patronage of the Sun King, Louis XIV. As a reward for the stunning works he painted for the king's personal collection, Robert was named "Peintre Ordinaire du Roi" in 1666, a title that confirmed his continuing fame and royal patronage. This exquisite watercolor dates from Robert's tenure in the court of Louis XIV. A particularly gifted miniaturist, the artist's immaculate technique is perfectly suited to the northern bobwhite's delicate form. In grand, swooping arcs, Robert traces the smooth roundness of the bird, dignifying its small stature among the tall blades of grass. Part of the New World quails, the northern bobwhite is native to eastern North America and features dappled plumage ideal for camouflage. Robert faithfully renders its brown, rufous, buff, and black coloring, and sharply articulates its feathers to draw out the bird's latent beauty. The fallen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Following the work is a biographical sketch of nonconformist clergyman and writer David Clarkson by dissenter William Bates (1625-99). => A mourning border surrounds the title-page of this work, which also offers a skull and crossbones woodcut device. Searches of WorldCat and NUC reveal only one copy of the Bates in the United States, at Duke University; there are several more of the Cloud but not many. Provenance: Ink signature of the Rev. C. Bedford of Denton; later in the library of the Pacific School of Religion.
