GUALDO PRIORATO (Galeazzo).
[Click Below for Full Description]

WOLLEY, HANNAH
London: R. Lowndes, 1670. FIRST EDITION. This is the rare and sought-after first edition of a popular book of recipes and home remedies by one of the first Englishwomen to make a living by writing. Hannah Wolley (ca. 1622 - ca. 1674) had worked as a healer before becoming an author, using knowledge gleaned from her mother and sisters to prepare salves, syrups, and other treatments for the pupils at her husband's school and her neighbors in Essex. The present work begins with a series of healing waters for all manner of ills, including the plague that had recently ravaged England. Also, there is a discussion of consumption, a frequent--and often fatal--condition for which she recommends (what sounds like extremely unappealing) "snail water." Additionally, there are waters to be used externally, to diminish the scars of smallpox. She continues with more substantial concoctions, from ales, preserves, and syrups to cakes, breads, and savories. The second part of the work focuses more on cookery, with recipes for "fish, flesh, and pastry" and sample menus for "extravagant feasts," "lesser feasts," and "fish days." The work ends with an alphabetical index, an extremely useful feature not always found in early cookery books. Wolley was twice widowed, and it was the reduced circumstances of her single state that led her into publishing. She produced half a dozen works on the household arts, and gained an international reputation. The present work appeared in two German editions (1674 and 1678) under the title "Frauenzimmers Zeitvertreib." Early owner Thomasin Francklyn (d. 1721) w … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOXON, Joseph
London: Printed by Joseph Moxon, 1670. [8], 272pp, [8]. With an additional engraved title and wood-cut illustrations in the text. Contemporary calf. Heavily rubbed, some loss to spine, corners bumped. Hinges cracked, substantial loss to blank pastedowns, additional engraved title laid down with some marginal loss and red wax soiling, sporadic dust soiling throughout, occasional ink annotations and markings, occasional damp-staining, particularly to top half of leaves of gatherings L-O and bottom half of gathering Oo. Joseph Moxon (1627-1691), printer, maker of globes, hydrographer to Charles II, and fellow of the Royal Society. A Tutor to Astronomie and Geographie, first published by Moxon in 1669, supersedes the author's own translation of W. J. Blau's similar title of 1654. The work, founded upon the systems of Tycho Brahe and Ptolemy, instructs on the use of globes in matters of astronomical, geographical and navigational reckoning, and in the solving of problems in trigonometrical and astrological calculation. In addition to the primary treatise Moxon includes a catalogue of stars and their constellations, providing reasons as to their naming and an account of their mythical significance. The work concludes with a discourse upon the progress of the astronomical sciences, a fascinating exposition of the history of that field of study, from early civilisation to the middle seventeenth century. Wing M3023.. Second edition, corrected and enlarged. Quarto.

Pascal, Blaise
Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1670. "Édition originale" of Blaise Pascal's posthumously collected thoughts on religion, a masterpiece of French prose. Pascal established his brilliance early, inventing the mechanical calculator at the age of eighteen, developing the field of probability theory with Pierre de Fermat, and breaking new ground in projective geometry, hydrodynamics, and hydrostatics. One night in 1654, Pascal experienced a mystical vision that caused him to renounce his scientific career in favor of religious contemplation; after his death, a scrap of paper was found sewn into the lining of his coat containing a description of that night: "Joie, joie, joie, pleurs de joie." Pascal joined the Jansenists, a sect of radical Augustinian Catholics. In his controversial Lettres provinciales (1656-1657), he took aim at the casuistry of the Jesuits, laying the groundwork for church reform. He then turned to a defense of his faith, recording his thoughts even as his health failed. His unfinished notes, now housed at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, were compiled after his death by Jansenist editors, and issued as the Pensées. Pascal engaged directly with the philosophical debates of the day, notably those raised by Descartes and Montaigne: "Le coeur a ses raisons que le raison ne connaît point." Brilliantly argued, Pascal's work proved magnetic even to those who disagreed with him: Voltaire described Pascal as a "giant" he wanted to "battle." Pascal can be logical and forceful, as in Pascal's Wager, when he places probability theory in servic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Duodecimo, 356, [2] pages. Lacking pages 139-148, 157-180, 189-190, 193-212, 311-318, 287-288. Lacking 66 pages in all. Notaker indicates that the book is 358 pages, but mis-numbered "248" on the final page. In fact, the number "248" is part of the unnumbered two-page table of contents, and is merely the page number of the item on the first line of the second page of the table. An early edition of a cornerstone book of French cuisine, originally published in 1651. Written after ten years in the employ of Louis Chaalon du Bled, Le Cuisinier François, reflects the changes in French cooking that had been made since the 1540s, when the previous French cookbooks had been issued, a gap of more than one hundred ten years. The book includes the first appearances of many recipes and techniques, including dishes served, "au naturel", "au bleu", and "a la mode". But the greatest change was in the use of spices, with pepper, cloves, and nutmeg the only ones used for savory dishes, putting aside sugar, ginger, cinnamon, and mace for use only with sweet dishes. (see introduction to Hyman, The French Cook). Incomplete, as mentioned above, but still handsome in hand-lettered, full vellum. And this printing is very rare. [OCLC locates just one copy of this printing, at the BNF; no auction records for this printing; Notaker 616.30; Vicaire 497].

Epicurus.
London: H. Herringman at the Blew Anchor..., 1670. 8vo (16.5 cm, 6.5"). Frontis., [18] ff., 201, [1] p. A beautiful example of => a somber binding by one of the Queens' Binders encases this third edition of => the first translation into English of Epicurus's Morals, first published in 1656. Probably the Queens' Binder B, arguably the best artisan of four Restoration binders employed by Catherine of Braganza and Mary of Modena, fashioned this elegant blind-tooled black morocco binding, each board bearing the B binder's distinctive all-over design of "four-petalled conventional flower[s] springing from a pair of leaves" (Nixon, p. 100), framed by drawer handle motifs, acorns, grapes, and pointellé decoration. [Meijer, Lodewijk] (a.k.a., Ludwig or Louis Meyer).
Uncommon first edition with a false imprint: Important hermeneutical treatise, arguing that the Bible should be interpreted through Cartesian rationality. Originally published anonymously, the work was for some time attributed to Benedictus de Spinoza, who was both a personal friend and mentor to Meijer (also sometimes called Ludwig or Louis Meyer); it rapidly gained a fair amount of notoriety, was condemned, inspired a number of rebuttals and defenses, went through several editions in both Latin and Dutch, and influenced Spinoza's writings. Famously, it called for a response from Spinoza, nothing less than his Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, published anonymously in 1670.Provenance: Ownership signature of "A. Schülin," Amsterdam, [16]92. An undeciphered 18th-century ownership "ex libris" opposite the title-page.

Penn, William
[ London], 1670. Small quarto. Modern red calf. Uniformly tanned and foxed. About very good. One of the most important incidents in the early life of William Penn was his trial in September 1670 on charges of unlawful assembly and disturbing the peace. He and another Quaker, William Mead, were tried in the Old Bailey. The bench attempted to intimidate the jury into a guilty verdict, and although both men were found not guilty, they both served time in jail. In 1670 a pamphlet on the trial was produced, loosely attributed to Penn and called THE PEOPLES ANCIENT AND JUST LIBERTIES ASSERTED.... Samuel Starling, the Lord Mayor of London and one of the judges in the trial, responded with a pamphlet of his own the same year. In the present pamphlet Penn, assisted by Quaker lawyer Thomas Rudyard, offers his spirited response to Starling's work. "This pamphlet reflects a new side of [William Penn], for instead of the reasonable and cultivated gentleman and Quaker, we find a deeply incensed young man defending his father's honor [Penn's father helped secure his release from prison] and slashing out at his persecutor" - Bronner & Fraser. Penn defends his father's honor and military record, reviews the facts of his trial, and considers the power and role of juries. An important and scarce early work on the role of the judiciary, by the future founder of Pennsylvania.

MAJESTUEUZE WANDKAART VAN LEIDEN"Lugdunum Batavorum ANo. 1670.' Kopergravure gedrukt van 12 platen. De befaamde 'GROTE HAGEN' "Afgemeten en Afgeteykent door Johan Douw De Jonge"' en gegraveerd door Christiaen van Hagen. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Zesen, Philipp v., Übers.) – Audiguier, Vital d'.
"The tale deals with an actual occurence including wars, tournaments, hunts, in short the occupation of high society" (Faber du Faur). III 99, 16c; Fromm 1091; Hayn/G.
