MAP OF ABISSINIA?Aethiopia Superior vel Interior vulgo Abissinorum?. Copper engraving published aprox. 1670 by Olfert Dapper in his Naukeurige Beschrijvinghe der Afrikaensche gewesten, with original hand colouring. Size. 29 x 37,5 cm.Attractive map of central Africa, covering the area from the Bight of Benin to the Indian Ocean and from Arabia and the Red Sea to Mozambique. It includes two decorative cartouches and is embellished with elephants, monkeys, and ostriches. While the African coast exhibits considerable advances over earlier maps of the region, the interior of Africa exhibits a cartography primarily based on the literature of antiquity. The map is smaller edition of Blaeu?s map of Africa from around 1630. Bleau derived most of the interior details from classical texts such as the Geographia of Claudius Ptolemeus. The map follows the Ptolemaic model with regard to the course of the White Nile and its source in two great lakes ? the Zaire Lacus (Zembre Lacus) and the Zaflan Lacus, themselves in the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon or Lunae Montes, located at the base of the map. The Blue Nile, which has its source is modern day Ethiopia, is expressed as a complex network of rivers and valleys bearing little resemblance to reality ? though the observer will note that many of the place names, Amara, Tigre, Dobas, and Dangali, do in fact reflect real places and are still in use today. Blaeu also draws a lake at the source of the Niger River, set just north of the West African Kingdom of Biafara, but fails to properly connect the river to its southern extension ? … [Click Below for Full Description]

1670. Bulino, circa 1670, monogrammato in lastra in basso. Rara. Engraving, circa 1670, monogrammed in plate below. AfterTitian. Beautiful impressions, printed on contemporary laid paper, with thin margins, light abrasions in the top, otherwise in good condition. These works are part of Notomie di Tiziano dedicate all'Ill.mo Sig. Francesco Ghislieri published in Bologna between 1670 and 1680. The title page contains the portrait of Titian between the bay leaves, the lion of St. Mark, a cloth containing the dedication. Here are 17 anatomical engravings. Fourteen of the plates are taken from De humani corporis fabrica of Vesalius and the other from Tabulae anatomicae VI, also of Vesalius. Queste ultime in realtà non furono in realtà disegnate da Tiziano, bensì da Jan van Calcar, mentre per il primo gruppo la paternità è dubbia e controversa. These in fact were not actually designed by Titian, but by Jan van Calcar, while the first g … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was born at York, the son of Francis Pole, but he spelled his name Poole, and in Latin Polus; his mother was a daughter of Alderman Toppins there. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge... In his depositions relative to the alleged Popish plot (September 1678), Titus Oates had represented Poole as marked for assassination, because of his tract (1666) on the Nullity of the Romish Faith. Poole gave some credit to this, reportedly after a scare on returning home one evening near Clerkenwell with Josiah Chorley. Poole left England, and settled at Amsterdam. Here he died on 12 October 1679 (N.S.), and was buried in a vault of the English Reformed Church, Amsterdam. His wife was buried on 11 August 1668 at St Andrew Holborn, Stillingfleet preaching the funeral sermon. He left a son, who died in 1697." - See Wikiped … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvador Jacinto Polo De Medina.
1670. Zaragoza, por Diego Dormer, pp viii + 291, (misnumbered 311), second edition, contemporary limp vellum. This collection was first published in 1664 with the same imprint. Although Palau calls for 311 pages, and the last one is numbered 311, the pagination is erratic throughout. Indeed pp145-164 inclusive are missed out entirely, but there is no break in the text, and the book collates perfectly complete. Loss to lower corners of a few leaves, some repaired, just affecting text on a couple of leaves, final leaf laid down, vellum a little marked and wrinkled.

Joints starting to split. Some faint pencil marks in in a few margins) (Note: The place of Josephus Justus Scaliger, 1549-1609, in the history of classical scholarship is royal. His preeminence is best understood from the entry which the French classicist Isaac Casaubon made in his diary after the death of this great man: 'Exstincta est illa seculi nostri lampas, lumen litterarum, decus Galliae, ornamentum unicum Europae'. His erudition was considered by his contemporaries to be a wonder of mankind. 'He not only exhibits a remarable aptitude for the soundest type of textual emendation; but he is also the founder of historical criticism. His main strength lay in a clear conception of antiquity as a whole, and in the concentration of vast and varied learning on distinctly important works' (Sandys, A History of Classical Scholarship, volume 2, p. 199-204). He was one of the first to point the way to a sounder method of emendation founded on the genuine tradition of MSS. In 1590 he filled the vacant place left by Justus Lipsius at the young University of Leiden. 'His disinclination to lecture was duly respected; all that the authorities at Leyden desired was his livin … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIBLE [Clementine Vulgate, Apocrypha]
Sumptibus Balthasaris ab Egmond & Sociorum, Coloniæ Agrippinæ [Cologne, Germany], 1670. 81, [119] pages; Contemporary full polished tan calf, with five raised bands on the spine, there is a red morocco label lettered in gilt "BIBLIA SACR" in the second panel. The central panel directly under the label has gilt tooling directly stamped, reading: "T. 5." (sic, for "6"). The other panels have elaborate gilt floral tooling, the covers are framed with a single rule fin gilt, marbled endpapers, edges decoratively stained red. With a superb engraved armorial bookplate mounted to the front free endpaper -- (a nine-point coronet surmounting a pear-shaped shield which contains a loop of rope surrounded by three stars and a crescent moon at the top. This excellent plate has no name, no date, and no identification of engraver). The binding is entirely consistent with the period of this 1670 book. The fine bookplate is in the Rococo style often denoted Louis XIV, with no straight lines, an elegantly curved pear-form to the heraldic shield, and even the coronet atop the shield is at a slightly jaunty angle. This plate, while unidentified, is worth further study. In all, a wonderful copy beautifullly preserved, of the final volume of a miniature edition of the Sixto-Clementine Vulgate Latin version of the Bible ('Biblia Sacra Vulgatæ Editionis Sixti Quinti Pontificis Maximi iussu recognita atque edita' . This edition resembles, but is slightly larger than, the miniature edition published at Cologne in 1638-1639. Our volume is the final volume in the 1670 miniature set; these three Biblica … [Click Below for Full Description]
